General power tool safety warnings

WARNING – Read all safety information, instructions, illustrations and technical data for this electric tool.
Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result
in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury.

Save all warnings and instructions for future reference.

The term “power tool” used in the safety instructions refers to mains-powered electrical tools (with a mains cable) and battery-powered electrical tools (without a mains cable)

  1. Work area safety

    • Keep your work area clean and well-lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
    • Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
    • Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.
  2. Electrical safety

    • Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
    •  Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
    • Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
    • Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or coiled cables increase the risk of an electric shock.
    • When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
    • If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.
  3. Personal safety

    • Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use  common sense when operating a power tool. Donot use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
    • Wear personal protective equipment and always safety goggles. Protective equipment such as a dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
    • Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the  switch is in the off-position before connectingto power source and/or rechargeable battery, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energising power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.
    • Remove any adjusting tools or screwdriver before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
    • Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
    • Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair and clothing away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
    • If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.
    • Do not let familiarity gained from frequent use of tools allow you to become complacent and ignore tool safety principles. A careless action can cause severe injury within a fraction of a second.
  4. Using and handling the power tool

    • Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
    • Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
    • Disconnect the plug from the power source and/ or remove the battery pack, if detachable, from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such precautionary measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
    • Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
    • Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool’s operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents arecaused by poorly maintained power tools.
    • Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
    • Use power tools, insert tools, insert tools, etc. according to these instructions. Take into account the working conditions and the activity to be carried out. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.
    • Keep handles and grasping surfaces dry, clean and free from oil and grease. Slippery handles and grasping surfaces do not allow for safe handling and control of the tool in unexpected situations.
  5. Using and handling the rechargeable tool

    • Only charge the batteries in battery chargers recommended by the manufacturer. A battery charger that is suitable for a particular type of battery poses a fire hazard when used with other batteries.
    • Only use the batteries in power tools that are designed for them. The use of other batteries can lead to injuries and a risk of fire.
    • Keep the unused battery away from paper clips, coins, keys, nails, screws or other small metal objects that could cause a short-circuit between the contacts. A short-circuit between the contacts of the battery could result in burns or fires.
    • Liquid may leak from the battery if used incorrectly. Avoid contact with it. In case of accidental contact, rinse with water. If the liquid gets into your eyes, seek additional medical attention. Leaking battery fluid may cause skin irritation or burns.
    • Do not use a damaged or modified battery. Damaged or modified batteries can behave unpredictably and cause fire, explosion or injury.
    • Do not expose a battery to fire or excessive temperatures. Fire or temperatures above 130°C may cause an explosion.
    • Follow all charging instructions and never charge the battery or rechargeable tool outside the temperature range specified in the operating manual. Incorrect charging or charging outside the approved temperature range can destroy the battery and increase the risk of fire.
  6. Service

    • Only have your power tool repaired by qualified specialists and only with original spare parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.

    • Never attempt to service damaged batteries. Any type of battery maintenance shall be carried out only by the manufacturer or an authorised customer service center.

    • General chainsaw safety warnings
Keep all body parts away from the saw chain when the saw is running. Before starting the pruning saw, ensure that the saw chain is not touching anything. When working with a chainsaw, a moment of carelessness can result in clothing or body parts being caught by the saw chain.

    •  Always hold the chainsaw with your right hand on the rear handle and your left hand on the front handle. Holding the chainsaw using the opposite grip increases the risk of injuries and shall be avoided at all times.

    • Only hold the chainsaw saw by the insulated gripping surfaces, as the saw chain could hit hidden power lines. Contact between the saw chain and a live power line can also electrify metal device parts and lead to an electric shock.

    • Always wear safety goggles and hearing protection. Further protective equipment for head, hands, legs and feet is recommended. Suitable protective clothing reduces the risk of injury from flying chips and accidental contact with the saw chain.

    • Do not work with the chainsaw in a tree, on a ladder, or from a roof or an unstable standing surface. There is a serious risk of injury if operated in such a manner.

    • Always make sure you have a firm footing and only use the chainsaw when standing on firm, safe and level ground. Slippery ground or unstable standing surfaces can cause loss of balance or loss of control of the chainsaw.

    • When cutting a branch that is under tension, expect it to spring back. If the tension in the wood fibres is released, the tensioned branch can hit the operator and/or wrest the chainsaw from control.

    • Be especially careful when cutting undergrowth and young trees. The thin material can get caught in the saw chain and hit you or throw you off balance.

    • Carry the chainsaw by the front handle when switched off, with the saw chain facing away from your body. Always put the protective cover on when transporting or storing the chainsaw. Careful handling of the chainsaw reduces the likelihood of accidental contact with the running saw chain.

    • Follow the instructions for lubrication, chain tensioning and replacing the guide bar and chain. An improperly tensioned or lubricated chain can break or increase the risk of kick-back.

    • Only saw wood. Do not use the chainsaw for work for which it is not intended. Example: Do not use the chainsaw to saw metal, plastic, brickwork or building materials other than wood. Using the chainsaw for unintended work can cause dangerous situations.

    • Do not attempt to fell a tree until you have a clear understanding of the risks and how to avoid them. The user or other persons can be seriously injured by a falling tre
      Causes and avoidance of kickback
Kickback can arise if the tip of the guide rail touches an object or if the wood bends and the saw chain jams in the cut. Touching with the rail tip can sometimes lead to an unexpected backward reaction, whereby the guide rail whips up and in the direction of the operator. If the saw chain jams on the top edge of the guide rail, the rail can jerk back in the direction of the operator suddenly. Each of these reactions can lead to you losing control of the saw and possibly suffering a serious injury. Never rely solely on the safety equipment integrated in the chainsaw. As the chainsaw operator, you should implement various measures to work without a risk of accidents and injuries. Kickback is the result of incorrect or deficient use of the electrical tool. It can be prevented by suitable precautionary measures, as described in the following:

    • Hold the saw firmly with both hands, with the thumbs and fingers enclosing the chainsaw handles. Bring your body and arms into a position in which you can absorb the kickback forces. If suitable measures are implemented, the operator will be able to withstand the kickback forces. Never let go of the chainsaw.

    • Avoid an unusual body stance and never saw above shoulder height. This will help to avoid unintentional contact with the rail tip, and enable improved control of the chainsaw in unexpected situations.

    • Always use replacement guide rails and saw chains prescribed by the manufacturer. Incorrect replacement rails and saw chains may cause the chain to break and/or lead to kick-back.

    • Adhere to the instructions of the manufacturer when sharpening and maintaining the saw chain. If the depth limiter is too low, this increases the tendency towards kickback.

    • Follow all instructions when clearing debris, storing or servicing the chainsaw. Make sure the switch is off and the battery is removed. Unexpected operation of the chainsaw saw while clearing a buildup of material or during maintenance can cause serious injury

    • Never work without a claw stop, the chainsaw can pull the operator forward. Use the claw stop for cutting tree trunks or thick branches. Using the claw stop increases work safety, reduces personal strain when working and vibrations are reduced.

    • For felling or cross-cutting, the serrated strip (claw stop) must be applied to the wood to be cut. The use of the spike bar is also recommended when cutting through thick branches

Additional safety instructions
  • Familiarize yourself with the chainsaw sawing technique in detail before use. Information can be found in specialist literature. We recommend attending a suitable training course.
  • For longer periods of non-use and for practice, you should always make simple cuts in safely supported wood before starting, in order to familiarise yourself with the chainsaw again.

Basic working notes

Attention!
Always make sure the device is fully assembled before commissioning!

Danger of injury!
Sawing and felling work as well as all related work may only be carried out by specially trained and briefed persons.

Note
Observe the country-specific regulations for felling work and obtain information from the relevant authority.

  • Make sure that no one can be harmed by the falling branches and trees.
  • Only the persons required for the felling work may be in the work area.
  • Keep the work area at the trunk clear and tidy so that operators have a safe standing area.
  • Keep escape routes clear and tidy in order to be able to leave the work area quickly.
  • Do not carry out felling work in stronger wind conditions, bad weather or poor visibility.
  • Keep distances to the nearest workplace of at least 2 1/2 tree lengths.

12.1 Use and handling

  • Never start the device before the guide rail (7), saw chain (6) and chain cover (12) are correctly fitted.
  • Do not cut wood that is lying on the ground or try to cut roots that are sticking out of the ground.
  • In any case, make sure the saw chain (6) does not come into contact with the soil, otherwise the saw chain (6) will dull immediately.
  • If you accidentally touch a solid object with the device, switch off the engine immediately and inspect the device for any damage.
  • Maintain the device carefully. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the device’s operation. Have damaged parts repaired before using the device. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained devices.
  • Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
  • Have the device serviced by qualified personnel.
  • Only use manufacturer’s recommended original spare parts.
Holding the device correctly

Risk of injury!

  • Never work on unstable ground!
  • Never work above shoulder height!
  • Never work when standing on ladders!
  • Do not bend too far when working!
  • Only use the device when the weather and terrain conditions are favourable!
  • Stand with both legs firmly on the ground.
  • Be aware of obstacles in the working area.
  • During work, always hold the device tight in both hands!
  • Hold the device:
    • with the left hand on the bow-type handle.
    • with the right hand on the handle.
    • whilst balanced in a stable stance.
How to saw correctly!
  • Scan the working area and remove any interferingobjects.
  • At the start of work, check that the device is safe.
  • Hold the device in both hands as prescribed.
  • Switch on the chainsaw before applying it to the cut.
  • Exert regular pressure on the device and do not apply excessive force.
  • If possible, apply the device to the branch you wish to saw with the claw stop (8).
  • Never work without the claw stop. The chainsaw can pull the operator forward. Use the claw stop for cutting tree trunks or thick branches. Using the claw stop increases work safety, reduces personal strain when working and vibrations are also reduced.

ATTENTION!

If the cutting device touches a foreign body, or the operating noise intensifies, or the electrical device vibrates unusually heavily, switch off the engine and allow the electrical device to come to a halt. Remove the battery and implement the following measures:

  • Check for damage.
  • Check for loose parts and fasten all parts.
  • replace damaged parts with equivalent parts or have them repaired.
After use

Risk of injury!
Always switch off the motor before setting the device down! The saw chain will run on for a short time after the on/off switch is released.

  • Stop the engine.
  • Wait until all moving parts have come to a complete standstill.
  • Remove the battery.
  • Place the protective cover (5) on the cutting unit.
  • Activate the chain brake (9).
  • Allow the product to cool.
Basic working technique

Risk of injury!

This section examines the basic working technique for using the device. The information provided here does not replace the many years of training and experience of a specialist. Avoid any work
that you are not adequately qualified for! Careless
use of the device can lead to serious injuries and
even death!

Sawing technique
Pull sawing (Fig. 20)

With this technique, sawing takes place with the underside of the guide rail from top to bottom.

The saw chain pulls the device forwards and away from the user. With this action, the front edge of the device forms a support, which absorbs the forces that arise on the tree trunk during sawing. With pull sawing, the user has significantly greater control over the device and is able to better avoid kickbacks. This sawing technique should therefore be used if possible.

Push sawing (Fig. 21)
With this technology, sawing takes place with the top side of the guide rail from bottom to top. The saw chain pushes the device backwards, towards the user.

WARNING!

If the guide rail tilts, the device may be jerked towards the user with great force. If the user does not balance  the backward force of the saw chain with their body strength, there is a risk that only the tip of the guide rail will remain in contact with the wood and kick-back will occur.

Risk of death or serious injuries!

Felling a tree (Fig. 22, 23)

Risk of injury!

Tree felling takes place in two steps (Fig. 23):

  • Saw a felling sink in the trunk of around one third of its diameter, on the side of the felling direction (1).
  • On the opposite side (2) make the felling cut, which must be slightly higher than the felling sink (approx. 3–5 cm).

Risk of injury!
Never saw fully through the trunk. The area (C) serves as a “hinge” and ensures the correct felling direction. During felling, only stand to the side of the tree you intend to fell! There is a risk of life-threatening injuries!

Trunks lying flat on the ground (Fig. 24)
  • Cut around halfway through the trunk, then turn it over and saw through the other side.

Product damage!
Ensure that the guide rail does not come into contact with the ground when sawing through a tree trunk!

Fallen trunks (Fig. 25)

We recommend supporting trunks on a sawhorse when sawing through them. If this is not possible, the trunk should be lifted with the aid of supporting boughs or with support blocks and supported.

  • In area A first cut around one third of the trunk diameter from top to bottom, and then make the subsequent cut from bottom to top.
  • In area B first cut around one third of the trunk diameter from bottom to top, and then saw through from the top.

Risk of injury

Do not saw trunks that are strained! Splitting wood or
a tilted guide rail can result in serious injuries!

Removing branches (Fig. 26 / 27)
  • Always work on the side opposite the respective branch.
  • Start at the bottom of the branch and work up.
  • Saw into the branch 10–15 cm from the branch base from bottom to top, to 1/3 of the branch diameter (1).
  • Saw through the branch slightly further out from top to bottom (2).
  • Perform a cut tightly against the trunk (3). Make the cut from top to bottom.
  • During delimbing always saw off the branches that project freely in the air first. Only lop off support limbs once the branches have been sawn along their length.

Risk of injury!

With branches that are supported or strained, the saw chain can wedge in the wood!

Release a jammed chainsaw

If the chainsaw becomes jammed during cutting, the user should:

  1. Switch off the chainsaw and attach it securely towards the inside of the tree (i.e. towards the tree trunk) or to a separate tool rope.
  2. Pull the chainsaw out of the notch while lifting the branch as far as necessary,
  3. If necessary, use a handsaw or second chainsaw to loosen the jammed chainsaw by cutting at least 30 cm away from the jammed chainsaw.

Regardless of whether a hand saw or a chainsaw is used to release a trapped chainsaw, the cuts to release the chainsaw should always be made on the outside (towards the tips of the branches) so that the chainsaw does not get carried away with the sawn-off parts and further complicate the situation.

Cleaning

Danger of injury!
Pull out the battery before carrying out any cleaning work.

Clean the product regularly after each use, depending on the conditions of use. If the unit is not cleaned, material damage and malfunctions may occur.

  • Keep protective devices, air vents and the engine housing as free of dust and dirt as possible. Rub the device clean with a clean cloth or blow it off with compressed air at low pressure.
  • We recommend that you clean the device directly after every use.
  • Use a damp cloth and a soft brush to clean the device. Do not use any cleaning products or solvents; they could attack the plastic parts of the device. Make sure that no water can penetrate the device interior. Water penetrating an electric device increases the risk of an electric shock.
  • Take off the chain cover and then remove deposits on the guide rail, saw chain, chain wheel and chain cover with a soft brush.

Transport

  • Always use the guide rail protective cover (5) when transporting.
  • Switch off the chainsaw before any transport, even over short distances. Secure the machine against tipping over during transport (including in vehicles) to prevent damage or injury.
  • Activate the chain brake.
  • Carry the device only by the bow-type handle (10). In doing so, the guide rail (7) points backwards, away from your body.

Storage

  • Store the device and its accessories in a dark, dry and frost-free place that is inaccessible to children. The optimum storage temperature lies between 5 and 30 ˚C.
  • Store the device in its original packaging. Cover the device to protect it from dust or moisture. Store the operating manual with the device.
  • Store the battery and device separately.
  • Recharge the battery before storage in winter.
  • In case of longer breaks between use, always drain the chain lubricating oil from the device.
  • Always use the guide rail protective cover (5) when storing the device.
  • Keep the device and in particular plastic components away from brake fluids, petrol, petroleum products, penetrating oils etc. They contain chemical substances which can damage or destroy the plastic components of the device.
  • Fertilizer and other garden chemicals contain substances that can have a severely corrosive effect on the metal parts. Do not store the device in the vicinity of these substances.

Maintenance

Carry out regular maintenance at the service centre, as well as a visual and functional check before using the chainsaw. Incorrect maintenance can lead to severe property damage and injuries.

Only approved spare parts, as mentioned in this instruction manual under Approved cutting sets, may be used. To do this, contact our customer service.

Re-tightening the saw chain

The saw chain (6) must not sag, although it should be possible to pull it 1–2 millimeters away from the guide rail in the centre of the guide rail.

  1. Turn the hand wheel (13) anti-clockwise, sufficiently that the guide rail (7) can be moved by hand.
  2. Turn the chain tensioning wheel (11) anti-clockwise, so that the saw chain (6) is tensioned.
  3. Turn the saw chain (6) by hand, to check it runs freely. It must glide freely in the guide rail (7).
  4. Tighten the hand wheel (13) for fastening the guide rail (7) to the cover.

NOTE

The tension of a new saw chain must be checked after a few minutes in operation, and adjusted if necessary. To do so switch the device off, remove the battery and apply the chain brake.

Clean guide rail oil guide groove
  1. Remove the guide rail (7).
  2. Clean the oil guide groove of dirt with a suitable tool. Use the plastic spatula for this. Do not use steel tools!
  3. Attach the guide rail (7) again
Sharpening the saw chain

Effective work with the cordless chainsaw saw is only possible if the saw chain is in good condition and sharp. This also reduces the risk of kick-back. Special tools are required to sharpen the saw chain; these ensure that the chain cutting edges are sharpened at the correct angle and to the correct depth. The saw chain can be rehappened at an authorize specialist workshop. Do not attempt to sharpen the saw chain yourself if you do not have a suitable tool and the necessary experience.

Maintaining the guide rail (7)

WARNING! Always wear safety gloves

  1. Remove any burrs on the edge of the guide bar using a metal file.
  2. Clean the groove of the guide rail (7) using a brush or compressed air. Replace the guide rail (7) as soon as the guide nut is worn.
  3. Turn the guide rail (7) after each use to ensure even wear.
  4. Check the sprocket at the tip of the guide rail (7) for smooth running. If necessary, lubricate it with a bearing oil. Let some bearing oil drip into the lubrication hole.
