SPEEDWAY 910-32104 Ford Kingpin Kit
Product Information
The 910-32104 – 1928-48 Ford Kingpin Kit is a set of components designed for replacing the kingpin in the spindle/axle of a Ford vehicle manufactured between 1928 and 1948. The kit includes new bushings, thrust bearings, grease zerks, and other necessary hardware for proper installation. It is important to note that the installation process requiresproper support for the vehicle to ensure safety. Failure to provide adequate support may result in serious injury or death.
Product Usage Instructions
- Before starting the installation process, securely support the vehicle with the frame on jackstands. Never work under a car supported only by a jack.
- Remove the wheels, tires, steering arm, and brake components from the spindle.
- Remove the nut from the kingpin lock bolt and drive out the lock bolt using a brass hammer or large punch. Also, remove the grease zerks.
- From the bottom of the spindle, use a hammer and a suitable large punch to drive the kingpin up out of the spindle/axle. Remove the spindle while noting the location of the thrust bearing and any shims for proper reassembly.
- If the kingpin is seized in the axle and cannot be driven out, soak it with penetrating oil and try again after 24 hours. If unsuccessful, remove the axle assembly from the vehicle and have the kingpin pressed out. Avoid using heat to free the kingpin as excessive heat can deform or brittle the axle boss and spindle.
- Thoroughly clean and inspect the spindle and axle for any damage, scoring, or cracks. Ensure that the new kingpin fits snugly in the axle bore without any play. If it is tight, lightly clean up the bore with a brake hone. If there is excessive play, the axle will need to be reamed for oversized kingpin and bushings. It is recommended to have the spindles taken to a competent machinist forthis rework.
- Using a suitable arbor, remove the old bushings and press the new bushings into the spindle, aligning the grease hole of the bushing with the grease zerk hole in the spindle. Incorrect installation of bushings can cause premature wear of the kingpinand bushings.
- Align hone/ream both bushings in unison for a final clearance of .001 to .0015.
- Pack the new thrust bearings with quality bearing grease and install new grease zerk fittings.
- Insert the old kingpin up through the lower arm of the spindle by approximately 1/2 inch. Install the thrust bearing on the kingpin with the metal dust shield facing up toward the bottom of the axle boss. Some applications may require a spacer on top of the thrust bearing.
- Position the spindle on the axle, sliding the kingpin up intothe axle boss. Measure the clearance between the top of the axle boss and the underside of the upper arm of the spindle. If the gap is greater than .015, add shim(s) as necessary to obtain proper clearance (.005-.015).
- Install a cup washer on the kingpin with the flat side against the head of the kingpin. Place a felt washer on the kingpin and slide it up into the open side of the cup washer.
- Orient the notch of the new kingpin toward the center of theaxle and push the kingpin down through shims and the top arm of the spindle, aligning the notch in the kingpin with the lock pin hole.
- Install the lock pin with the flat of the pin engaged in the kingpin notch and tighten the nut to 25 ft lbs.
- Repeat the above steps for the other side of the vehicle.
- Install the steering arms, brake components, wheels, and tires.
- Finally, grease the spindle bushings and perform a front-end alignment.
IMPORTANT: Please inspect all packages upon delivery and in the presence of the delivery driver if possible. The driver must note any visible damage and provide procedures for handling damage claims.
