Product Information

The Adjustable Attic Insulation Shield (AAIS) is a component designed to prevent insulation from coming into contact with the outer wall of the chimney. It is intended for use with chimney systems and is listed as compatible with SUPERVENT 2100 (JM) and SUPERPRO 2100 (ALT). The AAIS has been tested and meets the standards of CAN/ULC-S629 and UL 103 Type HT.

Product Usage Instructions

  1. Before assembling and installing the AAIS, read the entire set of instructions provided.
  2. Refer to the main installation instructions for additional information on installing the chimney system.
  3. Ensure that the installation is carried out by a qualified person in compliance with local building codes.
  4. CAUTION: Wear cut-resistant gloves when handling metal parts to avoid personal injury from sharp edges or projections.
  5. Install the AAIS at each ceiling level where the chimney passes through the dwelling.
  6. If the AAIS is installed above the Decorator Ceiling Support, a Firestop Spacer is not required.
  7. If the chimney in the attic space will be enclosed, a Firestop Spacer is required.
  8. The attic opening should be fully framed on all four sides to ensure the required 2 inches of air space clearance to the chimney, as specified in the Framing Dimensions in Table 1.
  9. To install the AAIS, slide the upper (adjustable) shield up as high as possible, ensuring a minimum of 1 overlap on the lower shield.
  10. Secure the upper shield to the lower fixed shield using the provided sheet metal screws through the prepunched holes in the upper shield.

  • Read the following instructions in their entirety before assembling and installing.
  • Refer to the main installation instructions for further information on the installation of the chimney system.
  • Our chimney systems are designed for installation by a qualified person in accordance with local building codes.

CAUTION:

  • WEAR CUT RESISTANT GLOVES WHILE HANDLING METAL PARTS TO AVOID PERSONAL INJURY. SHARP EDGES OR PROJECTIONS CAN CUT YOU

ADJUSTABLE ATTIC INSULATION

SHIELD (AAIS)

  • This instruction addendum is intended to cover the installation of the new style Adjustable Attic Insulation Shield (AAIS) until such time as the main instructions are reprinted with these revisions incorporated. The AAIS replaces the old styles (AIS – AISD) found in the main installation instructions. This Addendum is intended to cover the installation of this new AAIS.
  • The function of the AAIS (or a complete enclosure) is to keep insulation from coming into contact with the chimney outer wall. Certain insulations made of cellulose fiber (old newspapers, processed wood) may ignite and smolder due to heat trapped by contact with the chimney. When this smoldering fire reaches ordinary wood framing, a smoldering fire may create noxious gases and cause great property damage.
  • The Adjustable Attic Insulation Shield (AAIS) must be installed where a chimney passes from a lower living space into an open attic space. The AAIS is to prevent any debris or blown-in insulation from coming in direct contact with the outer pipe. The AAIS has a two part shield (top shield adjust over the lower shield) which allows for a depth of insulation from 12″ to 22″ plus the depth of the ceiling joist. The height of the AAIS is to meet the insulation level requirement of the National Building Code. It also incorporates a lower joist shield to protect the joist area. See Figure 1.
  • At each ceiling level where the chimney passes through the dwelling, install a Firestop Spacer (FS), see Figures 2 and 6. It is also required when the chimney in the attic space will be enclosed (see Figure 7).
  • When installing the AAIS immediately above the  Decorator Ceiling Support the Firestop Spacer is not required (see Figure 3).

To Install:
The attic opening should be fully framed on all 4 sides (Figure 4) to ensure the required 2 inches air space clearance to the chimney is present as per the Framing Dimensions in Table 1.

  • Slide the upper (adjustable) shield up as high as possible (keeping a minimum of 1″ overlap on the lower shield). Secure to lower fixed shield using the 4 sheet metal screws provided through the pre-punched holes in the upper shield (see Figure 5).SUPERVENT-SUPERPRO-2100-Adjustable-Attic-Insulation-Shield-fig-5
  • Slide the AAIS over the pipe extending into the attic space until the base plate of the AAIS is placed on the framed opening around the chimney and fully seated (see Figure 5).
  • Secure the base plate to the framing with at least 2 nails or wood screws per side (see Figure 5). Ensure the spacers found under the base plate are within the framed opening.SUPERVENT-SUPERPRO-2100-Adjustable-Attic-Insulation-Shield-fig-6
  • The upper shield can be trimmed down to ensure the AAIS will fit in a low clearance area in the attic at the soffit end. Ensure the top of the shield is 2″ higher than the level of insulation and it overlaps 1″ on the lower fixed shield.
  • If greater height restrictions do exist, it is permissible to enclose the chimney in the attic space by installing the Firestop Spacer (FS) at the ceiling level and a Rafter Radiation Shield (RRS) installed at the roof level. The enclosure must maintain the required minimum air space clearance of 2″ (50mm) to the chimney pipe all the way to the underside of the roof deck.SUPERVENT-SUPERPRO-2100-Adjustable-Attic-Insulation-Shield-fig-7
  • The lower telescoping joist shield will extend below the ceiling joist and sit inside of the Ceiling Support or on top of the Firestop Spacer. Ensure it is properly extended down through this area.
  • NOTE: It is permissible to add Universal Insulation Shielding (JUSI) in the Adjustable Attic Insulation Shield (AAIS) to reduce cold air infiltration into the dwelling. See instructions supplied with the Universal Insulation Shielding.
  • Refer to the main instructions on information of other components needed for the installation.
