Scala SC 17 Clinical Thermometer

Product Information

The SC 17 is a digital clinical thermometer designed for measuring human body temperatures. It is a maximum thermometer, meaning it displays the highest temperature measured within 60 seconds. The most recent measured value is always saved for reference. The thermometer is manufactured by K-jump Health Co., Ltd. in Taiwan and distributed by Polygreen Germany GmbH in Stahnsdorf, Germany. The importer is SCALA Electronic GmbH, also located in Stahnsdorf.

Safety Information
The SC 17 should only be used for measuring human body temperatures. It contains small parts, such as batteries, which can be a choking hazard for small children. Keep the thermometer and its batteries out of reach of children. If any parts are swallowed, seek immediate medical help.

Product Usage Instructions

Turning On and Off
To turn on the SC 17, press the I/O button briefly. The device will emit a signal tone and be ready to take measurements. After use, press the I/O button briefly again to turn off the device. Another signal tone will be sounded, indicating the device has been switched off. If the device is not manually switched off, it will automatically turn off after approximately 3 minutes.

Measuring Temperature
There are two recommended methods for measuring body temperature using the SC 17:

  1. Anus (Rectal) Method: This method is considered the safest, especially for infants and small children. Carefully insert the thermometer point into the anus, not exceeding a maximum depth of 2 cm. Allow approximately 1 minute for the measurement to complete.
  2. Under the Arm (Axillary) Method: From a medical perspective, this method may lead to inaccurate readings and is not suitable for precise measurements.

Measurement of Basal Body Temperature
The SC 17 can be used to measure basal body temperature, which is helpful in determining fertile or unfertile days in the female cycle. Follow the same instructions as mentioned above for measuring temperature using the rectal or axillary method.

Cleaning and Disinfection
For cleaning, it is recommended to use an alcohol pad, which can be purchased from any dispensing chemist. In medical facilities, Mucocit-F2000 or HelipurHplus can be used for disinfection. Both products are effective against hospital-typical pathogens and can be purchased from any dispensing chemist.
Note : Due to the inability to achieve 100% disinfection at home, it is strongly advised that each patient use their own fever thermometer to minimize the risk of microbial contamination.

Measurement Check and Guarantee:
A measurement check is typically not required for most users. However, medical practices should perform a measurement check every two years as per Medical Product User regulations. If a measurement check is desired (at the user’s expense), the thermometer can be sent to the importer’s address. It is important to package the device securely and ensure correct postage stamps are applied. The SC 17 comes with a 2-year guarantee from the date of purchase, covering material or manufacturing defects. In case of any defects, please return the device to the importer’s address along with proof of purchase and a description of the issue for prompt rectification.

Special features

The SC 17 is a maximum thermometer, i.e. the highest temperature is displayed after only 60 seconds. The most recent measured value is always saved.

Safety information

  • The SC 17 is suitable only for measuring human body temperatures.
  • The thermometer contains small parts (batteries, etc) which could be swallowed by small children. Please keep the thermometer and its batteries out of the reach of small children. If the battery or other parts are swallowed you should seek medical help immediately.
  • Protect the SC 17 from direct sunshine and temperatures above 50°C.
  • Never drop the SC 17, do not bend or open it (with the exception of the battery compartment for battery replacement).

Operating manual

Press the I/0 button to switch on. A short signal tone shows that the device is in the “switched on” condition. A segment test takes place simultaneously (checks all display segments and carries out an internal function test (see under “Function test”)). After this, if the temperature measured by the temperature sensor is less than 32°C, the display shows an “L“ and “°C“. After around one second, the “°C“ starts to blink. The „L“ stands for low (less than 32°C).The current temperature is continuously displayed during measurement, and the “°C” blinks during the entire measurement time. The measurement is completed after around 60 seconds. If the measurement is taken orally or rectally, the approximate final temperature is shown after about 60 seconds and changes only marginally after this time. After the measurement is completed, the temperature value measured remains in the display until the SC 17 is switched off. To turn the device off after use, press the I/0 button briefly. The signal tone will again be sounded. If the device is not switched off, a signal tone is sounded after around 3 minutes and the device then switches off automatically.

Display of last measured value

  • If you keep the I/O button pressed for longer than three seconds, the last measured value will be shown in the display. As soon as you release the I/0 button, the device is ready to take measurements.

Function test
The thermometer is checked for correct functioning automatically every time it is switched on. All segments are displayed, and then L°C. If a failure (measurement inaccuracy) is recognised, “ERR“ (Error) is shown in the display.

Measured value deviation
The measured temperatures will always deviate, depending on the measurement location. This is normal, and caused by deviations in temperature distribution on the human body. You could, for example, measure a rectal temperature of 36.6°C, an oral temperature of 36.1°C and an underarm value of 35.6°C.

Measurement locations
In the mouth (oral) Small temperature variations in the mouth between measurements are normal. These are caused by varying temperature distribution within the mouth. Try to place the thermometer in one of the two heat pockets under the tongue, to the left and right of the tongue root. The measurement sensor must have good contact with the tissue. The subject should close the mouth and breathe normally through the nose so that the measured result is not affected by breathed air.
Measuring period: approx. 1 minute

In the anus (rectal)
This is the safest method. It is particularly suitable for infants and small children. Guide the thermometer point carefully max. 2 cm into the anus. Measuring p eriod: approx. 1 minute.

Under the arm (axillary)
From a medical viewpoint this type of measurement leads to inaccurate values. It is therefore unsuitable for carrying out exact measurements.

Measuring the basal body temperature
The device can also be comfortably and practically used for the measurement of fertile or unfertile days in the female cycle using the temperature measurement method.

Changing the battery

As soon as the symbol appears in the display, the battery has run out and requires replacement. Always replace the discharged battery with one of the same type. To do this, proceed as follows:
Pull the cover off the battery compartment. The battery can now be accessed. Remove the used battery with the help of a pointed object (pincers, small screwdriver etc.) and put the new battery (AG 3, LR 41 or SR41) in. Please make sure it is the right way round. You can purchase batteries from jewellers or electrical shops.

Measurement checks
Checking the accuracy of the thermometer is not necessary in most cases. The Medical Product User regulations stipulate a measurement check every two years for devices used in medicinal practices. If you require a measurement check (at your expense), please send the thermometer to importers address. Please make sure it is well-packaged and that the correct postage stamps are applied.

Cleaning and disinfection

Please only use an alcohol pad. Alcohol pads can be purchased from any dispensing chemist. We recommend the use of Mucocit?-F2000 or Helipur?Hplus to disinfect the thermometer when it is being used in medical facilities. Both are effective against all hospital-typical pathogens and can be purchased from any dispensing chemist.

Microbial contamination
Because a hundred percent disinfection is not possible under conditions at home, it is urgently recommended that every patient should use their own fever thermometer.

Guarantee

We give a guarantee period of 2 years from the date of purchase. We guarantee perfect design of this article. We will rectify all material or manufacturing errors during the guarantee period. If, contrary to expectations, defects are found, please send the device back to address of the importer. Please enclose the proof of purchase and a description of the defect so that the problem can be rectified as soon as possible.

Disposal note

Defect devices or devices which are taken out of operation at the end of their service life may still contain residues that could present a risk to the environment. Please dispose of the device in a suitable and correct way at a collection point for old electrical items.
Batteries must be disposed of correctly. There are containers for battery disposal at battery dealers and in communal collection points.
