SAFETY

  • Do not expose the page-turner to extreme heat or fire.
  • Always place the page-turner securely on the piano or the music stand to avoid the risk of it falling off.
  • The base of the page-turner is slanted 3 degrees by design. Do not leave the page-turner standing upright on a flat surface. If it’s not on the piano or on a music stand, lay it flat on its back.
  • When in use, do not place any objects above the page-turner and do not obstruct the space near the top of the page-turner.
  • Never charge the batteries at temperatures below freezing (i.e. below 32° F). Doing so will permanently damage the batteries and render them unsafe.
  • The two cubical super magnets are very strong magnets. Handle them carefully. When handling, always firmly grasp them in your hand!
  • They will attract and attach to all things metallic, including themselves. Keep them away from children! If they smash into each other from some distance, they will likely break.

Unpacking

  • For protection during shipping, the page-turner has a cover over the power switch, which should be removed.

General Operating Instructions

  • Carefully place the page-turner securely on the piano or music stand where the sheet music goes.
  • Insert paper clips on the top-right corners of the sheet music for the pages to be turned. See ‘Best Practices’ for optimal results.
  • Place and center the sheet music on the page-turner. The sheet music should be flat and not drooping.
  • Turn on the page-turner (switch on the left side).
  • Wake up the pedal by stepping on it for 5 seconds or more. It goes back to sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity.
  • Now the page-turner is ready. Make sure that the top of the page-turner is unobstructed. Step on the pedal to turn the page.

Best Practices – General

Important! Please read!

  • Following the guidelines on these pages will minimize the chance of unsuccessful page turns.
  • It is strongly recommended to read and follow them to achieve the best results.
  • Pages need to be “flat” and stay open on their own. If the pages aren’t flat or tend to close up, press on the binding area of the sheet music.
  • Two types of paper clips are included: thin, and thick. The thin paper clips ( .033″ dia.) allow more to be stacked but require bending to improve their grip on the page. When bending, bend the small loop only so that the paper clip is still “flat” and that all of the large loop touches the magnet of the swivel arm.
  • The Best tilt angle to place the page-turner is 65° and must be between 50° – 70°, as shown below. When the angle is too high, turning 2 pages at a time becomes more likely .

Best Practices – Paper Clips

  • Best location for the paper clips is centered with respect to the swivel arm magnet. This is typically slightly to the left of the page number on the sheet music, as shown below.
  • It is best to slant the paper clips at a 45° angle, as shown below.
  • For consecutive pages, it is best to place them at exactly the same location on the page. This minimizes the chance of turning 2 pages at a time. Lowering the tilt angle (see pg. 5) similarly minimizes the chance.
  • It’s fine to place paper clips on many pages.
  • However, there is a limit. At some point, the sheet music is no longer “flat” due to the thickness of all the paper clips combined. This will cause the swivel arm magnet to fail to ‘grab’ the page. The figures below illustrate this.
  • Paper clips have a “larger” side and a “smaller side. It is better to put the larger side on the front of the sheet music. Having the smaller side facing the front leads to weaker attachment to the magnet.

Charging

  • The page-turner’s battery typically lasts 25 hours per charge depending on the amount of activity. The pedal’s battery typically lasts 20 hours in continuous awake mode regardless of activity.
  • For both units, the low-battery LED indicator lights up when charging is needed. When this occurs, charge soon. If the batteries are deeply discharged, their life span is shortened. If completely discharged, they may become damaged. Therefore, power off the turner when not in use. It is ok and good to charge the battery at any time even if it is not low.
  • Please note that when left in the power-off condition for a long time ( about 6-12 months) the batteries do drain, and periodic charging is needed.
  • When charging, power off and do not operate.
  • Never charge the batteries at freezing temperatures (i.e. below 32° F). Doing so will damage them permanently and render them unsafe.
  • Note that if the battery is not charged after the indicator has lit, the battery would continue to drain and the indicator would no longer be lit given time.
  • In both units, when charging, a not-so-bright red light emanates from the charge port. When charging is complete, a brighter blue light emanates.
  • Note: power off the page turner while charging.

Pedal

Note: do not operate the pedal while it is being charged

Modes of Operation

Mode 1 – Fast Mode

  • This mode is entered by powering up the page turner with the swivel arm on the left side Mode 2 (recommended)- Normal Speed Mode This mode is entered by powering up the page Turner with the swivel arm on the right side Mode 3_(seldom use) – Increased Vertical Travel
  • This mode is not normally needed. It is included for working with binders with loosely bound sheets or unusually flexible paper. This mode is entered into from either Mode 1 or Mode 2 by manually moving the arm to the left side prior to the pedal press twice in succession.
  • Note – It is okay to move the swivel arm by hand when the page-turner is inactive. The swivel arm should move freely.

Super Magnets

  • Two cubical super (i.e. neodymium) magnets ( 1 cm side) are provided to you. These very strong magnets can be used to hold sheet music in place. This can come in handy when the sheet music doesn’t want to stay open, or if the sheet music is very light, such as music printed on a few sheets of paper. The locations ofattachment are shown below.
  • Handle them carefully and keep away from children. Always grasp them firmly. If they smash into each other from a distance they will likely break.

Printed Letter-Sized Sheets

  • The majority of sheet music is 12″ in height.
  • Printed sheet music on standard letter paper is 11″ in height, and not bound. In order for the page-turner to work with printed letter-sized sheets, two things need to happen:
  1. The sheets have to be bound. This can be done by using a 3-ring binder or by stapling. 3- A ring binder will work best.
  2. There needs to be a support piece underneath the sheet music to bring up the height to 12.” Though any rectangular box with proper height, width (z18″), and depth (z1″) will suffice, we make ones with grooves to work best with 3-ring binders. This is because the binder is typically taller than the sheets at 111/2″ -11 3/4″. We recommend to contact us at service@automaticPageTurner.com if you plan to use the page turner with 3-ring binders.

Care, Magnet Strip, & Support

  • Your page turner is a finely-tuned machine performing a somewhat delicate task. Pleasetreat with care.
  • Other than keeping it clean, and charging whenever required, there is no maintenance necessary for the page turner or the pedal.
  • For cleaning, it is okay to wipe the surfaces of both the page turner and the pedal with damp cloth should that be desired or necessary.
  • The surface of the page turner can be scratched. Please avoid sharp metal objects coming into contact with it, unless it is your intention to craft patterns.
  • A 111 x 2″ magnetic strip that is 3/32″ thick is included. Should you ever find that the page turner is prone to grabbing 2 pages at once, this weaker magnetic strip can be placed (it will selfattach) over the strip at the end of the swivel arm, and which should eliminate the chance of grabbing 2 pages at once. It is to be used with the normal speed mode only.
