Product Information

Please read this manual before operating your JCB Tough Tablet, and keep it for future reference. The descriptions in this manual are based on the default settings. Available features and additional services may vary by network or service provider. The manufacturer is not liable for performance issues caused by third-party applications.

Your JCB Tough Tablet

Unpacking

In the box, you should find:

  • JCB Tough Tablet
  • USB-C data cable
  • Plug adapter
  • SIM Pin

Charging the Battery

Before using the JCB Tough Tablet for the first time, you should charge the battery fully. Follow these steps:

  1. Using the USB-C data cable and appropriate plug adapter, connect the cable to the tablet and plug it into a power source.
  2. Charge the battery until the full icon is shown on the display.
    Warning: Use only the Data Cable provided (or a premium cable) and charger which has the European CE or new UKCA mark. A non-approved, substandard or faulty charger could damage your tablet.

Installing the SIM Card

To use the phone function, you need to insert a Nano SIM card.
Follow these steps:

  1. Remove the rubber bung that covers the SIM & Memory Card Tray.
  2. Pull out the SIM Tray using the SIM Pin if required.
  3. Make sure that the card’s gold contacts face into the device= and push the SIM card into the slot.
  4. You can insert up to two Nano SIM cards.
  5. Replace the rubber bung afterwards.

Installing the Memory Card

To store additional multimedia files, you need to insert a memory card. Follow the instructions above as for fitting a SIM card. If you choose to install a memory card, you may only use one SIM card.
Warning: Use only memory cards that carry the SD Card logo otherwise they may damage your JCB Tough Tablet. You can install up to a maximum of 128GB additional memory using a memory card.

Using Your JCB Tough Tablet

To turn on your JCB Tough Tablet, press and hold the power key (on the right- hand side of the tablet). To restart your device, press and hold the power key, then select Restart. To turn off your JCB Tough Tablet, press and hold the power key, then select Power Off.

Android Interface

  • Your JCB Tough Tablet is factory configured with Gesture Navigation. To go to the Home screen, swipe up from the bottom of the screen. To switch Apps, swipe up and hold. To go back, swipe from either the left or right edge.
  • To select three-button navigation (more familiar to phone users), go to Settings, System Navigation, and choose 3-Button Navigation. You can customize the position of the Go Back, Home, and Switch Apps buttons.

Home Screen
The home screen may be configured to have multiple panels of applications. By holding your finger on an Application and then dragging right, you can create a new panel to customize your JCB Tough Tablet. You can create multiple panels that contain your preferred applications or widgets. Widgets may be created by holding your finger on a blank section of the screen and then selecting the desired widget.

UNPACKING

In the box you should find:

Charge the battery
Before using the JCB Tough Tablet for the first time, you should charge the battery fully. Using a USB-C data cable and appropriate plug adapter charge the battery until the full icon is shown on the display.
Warning: Use only the Data Cable provided (or a premium cable) and charger which has the European CE or new UKCA mark. A non-approved, substandard or faulty charger could damage your tablet.

Install the SIM card

  • You need to insert a Nano SIM card to use the phone function. To install the SIM card, remove the rubber bung and pull out the SIM Tray (use the SIM Pin if required).
  • Make sure that the card’s gold contacts face into the device and push the SIM card into the slot. You can insert up to two Nano SIM cards. Replace the rubber bung afterwards.

USING YOUR JCB TOUGH TABLET

To turn on your JCB Tough Tablet, press and hold the power key (on the right hand side of the JCB Tough Tablet). To restart your device, press and hold the power key, select Restart. To turn off your JCB Tough Tablet, press and hold the power key, select Power Off.
Follow the Android set up process the first time you switch on your JCB Tough Tablet making sure you have a SIM card inserted and/or access to Wi-Fi.

Android Interface

  • Your JCB Tough Tablet is factory configured in Gesture Navigation which means to go to the Home screen swipe up from the bottom of the screen. To switch Apps, swipe up and hold. To go back swipe from either the left or right edge.
  • To select three button navigation (more familiar to phone users) go to Settings, System Navigation and choose 3-Button Navigation. You can customize the position of the Go Back, Home and Switch Apps buttons.

Home screen
The home screen may be configured to have multiple panels of applications. By holding your finger on an Application and then dragging right you can create a new panel to customize your JCB Tough Tablet. You can create multiple panels which contain your preferred applications or widgets. Widgets may be created by holding your finger on a blank section of the screen and then selecting the desired widget.

Status bar
The status bar is shown at the top of the screen. It displays the time, notifications, connectivity status (wi-fi, Bluetooth), signal strength and battery strength.

Notification panel

  • Swipe down from the top of the screen to open the notification bar and display six commonly used shortcuts. A short press activates or deactivates the feature, a long press takes you into the menu for each feature for more options.
  • If you continue to swipe down the notification bar a second time it will display further options, furthermore in the lower right corner of panel the Edit (Pencil) button will enable you to add or delete shortcuts and switch, drag or sort.
  • Tap the icon to activate or deactivate features and other settings.
    • Wi-Fi: Activate or deactivate the Wi-Fi connection.
    • Bluetooth: Activate or deactivate the Bluetooth connection.
    • Do Not Disturb: Activate or deactivate the feature.
    • Torch: Activate or deactivate the Flashlight.
    • Auto-Rotate: Activate or deactivate the auto rotation screen feature.
    • Battery Saver: Activate or deactivate the Battery Saver.
    • Mobile Data: Activate or deactivate mobile data.
    • Aeroplane Mode: Activate or deactivate when travelling on a flight.
    • Screen Cast: allows the tablet screen to be shared with a compatible device, e.g. Smart TV.
  • By swiping left a further number of shortcuts are available including:
    • Location: activate or deactivate location tracking (this is used by a number of Applications to improve the user experience, e.g. maps).
    • Night Light: activates a softer light for night reading.
    • NFC: activate to use Google Pay, tag reading, file sharing etc.
    • Dark Theme: provides a reverse screen contrast across the menu.
    • Super ScreenShot: enables screenshots with added graphics.
    • To customize your JCB Tough Tablet according to your preferences, tap the (Edit) Pencil icon from the bottom right of the screen and then hold and drag the icons to rearrange the order or to add/delete shortcuts.

Manage applications

  • To access all applications swipe up from the bottom of the screen. In addition you can customize your home screens by dragging ang dropping Apps (see note above).
  • To manage the applications installed on your JCB Tough Tablet, tap Settings, Apps & Notifications. To uninstall an application, select an item and tap Uninstall, tap OK to confirm. Alternatively, hold the App icon and follow the options on the screen.
  • To stop or change the settings of an application, select an item and tap the option you need. Please note, not all applications may be deleted from your JCB Tough Tablet as they are part of the installation software.

Smart Key (Programmable Function Button F2)

  • Your JCB Tough Tablet has a physical button on either side of the phone which can be programmed for one touch access to a number of functions. Both buttons access the same function once programmed.
  • To program go to Settings, Smart Key, F2 and then choose from the default options or go to other applications to set the function for the Smart Key.

SOS Key (F1)

  • In addition to the Smart Key your JCB Tough Tablet also has an SOS physical button on the left hand side of the tablet, above the Smart Key. To set the SOS button there is a two step process. To program go to Settings, Smart Key, F1 and then choose SOS.
  • Next go to Settings, SOS, SOS Enable and then Add Contact. By adding a contact phone number when the SOS button is processed (even when the phone is locked) it will call the number programmed. In addition you can also add a text message to be sent when you activate the SOS Key.
  • If you do not require the SOS function the F1 Key may be programmed as an additional Smart Key.

Security
You can protect your JCB Tough Tablet and data by setting screen lock or encrypting your mobile phone.

Set a Screen Lock

  • To set a screen lock, tap Settings, Security then select:
    • Screen Lock from application list.
    • None: Deactivate the screen lock.
    • Swipe: Slide to unlock the screen.
    • Pattern: Draw a pattern to unlock. Follow the instructions to draw your lock pattern. When prompted, draw the pattern to unlock the screen.
    • PIN: Enter a numeric PIN to unlock. When prompted, enter the PIN to unlock the screen.
    • Password: Enter a password to unlock. When prompted, enter the password to unlock the screen.
  • Smart Lock enables you to automatically unlock your JCB Tough Tablet in specific locations or surroundings.
Display
  • Screen Time-Out:
    Select Settings, Display, Advanced, Screen Timeout from application list, you can set the time before the screen times out and goes into lock mode. (If you have not entered any characters or made other selections).

  • Display Size:
    You can set the size of text and icons at Settings, Display, Advanced, Display Size.

  • Data Management & Limit:
    You can set limits, restrict Applications and see your data usage at Settings, Network & Internet, Data Usage, Data Warning & Limit.

  • Quick Switch:
    You can switch applications by simply double clicking the Switch Apps button which is the ‘square’ at the bottom of the screen (when the device is configured in 3-button navigation (see Android Interface above). This button displays all recently opened applications.

  • Reset mobile phone:

    • You can reset system and desktop settings to their original values by the following steps: Select Settings, System, Advanced, Reset Options from application list.
    • Tap Erase all data (factory data reset).
    • Tap Reset app preferences (which changes permissions and restrictions back to default).
    • Tap Reset Wi-Fi, mobile and Bluetooth back to original settings which will erase all connected devices and known Wi-Fi networks.
      Warning: Factory data reset will erase all data from your JCB Tough Tablet, including your Google account, system and application data and settings, and downloaded applications.
Phone

To use calling functions, tap the Phone icon from application list at the bottom of the screen.

  • Make A Call
    To make calls, you can use any of four ways:
1. Enter numbers by using the virtual numeric keypad on the screen which is indicated by 10 dots at the bottom of the screen.
2. Tap the ‘star’ icon to call from your favourites.
3. Tap the ‘clock’ icon to call from your recent calls.
4. Tap the ‘people’ icon to make a call from your contacts.
  • Answer A Call
    To answer a call, swipe up the screen if locked or tap the ‘answer’ button if unlocked.

  • Decline Or End A Call
    To decline a call, swipe down the screen if locked or tap the ‘decline’ button if unlocked. To end a call in progress, tap the red button.

  • Call Settings
    To change call settings, tap the option button (indicated by three dots) at the upper right hand side of the screen next to the microphone icon.

Ringtone & Vibrate

You can set different ringtones for incoming calls.

  • Settings, Sound then select Phone Ringtone to open a list of ringtones, select the desired ringtone, and then select OK to confirm.
  • Settings, Sound and select Also Vibrate for Calls to open the vibration function and the phone vibrates to notify you when call is coming.

Dial Pad Touch Tones
To add a touch tone to the dial pad go to Settings, Sound, Advanced, Dial pad tones you can open or close the Dial pad tones. In addition you can adjust the volume of ringtones, media and in call volume by using the volume rocker switch on the right hand side of the phone.

Voicemail

  • With the call divert network service, you can direct incoming calls to your voice mailbox. Tap the Phone icon, then Settings (three dots), Voicemail, Advanced Settings, Setup and you can enter your network or service provider voicemail number. (Please contact your provider if you are unsure of this number).
  • To change the way you are notified of a Voicemail tap the Phone icon, then Settings (three dots), Voicemail, Notifications to determine how you receive your Voicemails.

Call Options

These options can be accessed by tapping the Phone icon, then Settings (three dots).

  • Quick Responses

    • Quick response is a feature to reject the call with a predefined message. Tap one of the predefined messages to be displayed when you want the call to be rejected, then tap OK. Alternatively, programme your own.
    • These options can also be accessed by tapping the Phone icon, then Settings (three dots), Calling Accounts, select your SIM/Network.
  • Fixed Dialing
    Limit the number of numbers that can be dialed on the phone (does not affect emergency services). To set up Fixed Dialing you will require a ‘SIM Pin’ from your network or service provider.

  • Wi-Fi Calling
    Uses available Wi-Fi connection for calls in preference of phone network. If there is no Wi-Fi available the phone will automatically use your network. Wi- Fi Calling requires additional settings from your network or service provider.

  • Call forwarding
    Call diverting is a network feature to send incoming calls to another number that you specify. Call Forwarding requires additional settings from your network or service provider.

  • Call Barring

    • Enables you to block types of call including international and roaming calls.
    • The following option can be accessed by tapping the Phone icon, then Settings (three dots), Calling Accounts, select your SIM/Network and then Additional Settings.
    • Call Barring requires additional settings from your network or service provider.
  • Call Waiting
    Your network or service provider notifies you of a new incoming call while you have a call in progress or you can make a new call during a call.

Contacts

  • Tap Contacts from the application list to access contacts. Your contacts will be displayed in alphabetical order. By tapping the Settings button in the top right corner (indicated by three dots) and then Customise Display you can choose to display contacts on the phone, your SIM or Google account. In addition you can change the settings in terms of how contacts are displayed.
  • Add New Contact by tapping on the ‘plus’ button at the bottom right of the screen. Once added choose where to save the contact (phone, SIM or Google account).

Edit A Contact
To edit a contact, select and tap the contact you want to change. Tap the edit icon at the lower right (pencil icon, Edit Contact), change necessary fields and save.

Messaging

View messages
Click the Messaging icon from application list at the bottom of the phone.

  • Create and send SMS
    Tap Start Chat. You may either scroll through your contacts or manually enter a new phone number. Once either is chosen the keyboard will appear with the ‘chat message’ box above. You can now type your message in that box. Once completed press the ‘arrow’ icon to the right of the message to send.

  • Create and send MMS
    Repeat the instructions above, but before you press send tap the ‘camera’ icon to the left of the message and you now have the ability to add a picture from your gallery or take a photo to send with your message.

  • Email

    • If you have a google account you will automatically have a Gmail account which will be set up when you first commission the phone. You can then access your Gmail account through the Gmail application.
    • You may add additional email accounts. Your tablet is compliant with applicable internet standards for POP3/IMAP/Exchange.
    • Before you can send or receive mail on your tablet, you need to set up an email account and define the email settings correctly. You can define more than one mailbox.
    • Settings, Accounts, Add Account and then choose the type of email account you wish to add. Follow the set up instructions on your phone to complete set up. You may require information from your network or service provider to complete the set up process.
Web
  • Browser
    Tap the Google Chrome icon from the application list at the bottom of the screen to access to the web (red, yellow and green with blue centre icon). You will be presented with a search bar (or you can use the microphone icon to do a voice search).

  • Set homepage
    Tap the option button at the upper right (indicated by three dots) and then select Settings, Homepage. Enter the web address of the desired web page.

  • Add bookmarks
    While navigating a website, tap the option button (three dots) and select the ‘star’ icon at the top of the menu bar to save the URL to your bookmarks and easily access it later.

  • View bookmarks and history
    Tap the option button (three dots) and select Bookmarks to open the bookmark list and the recent history.

  • New Tab
    To open up a new a new tab within the browser tap the option button (three dots) and select New Tab.

  • Customize browser
    To make adjustments in your browser settings, tap the option button (three dots) at the upper right, and then select Settings.

Camera

With the camera function, you can capture photos and take videos.

  • Capture a photo
    Open the Camera application from the list at the bottom of the screen (the aperture icon). Press the aperture icon to take a picture. Using two fingers on the screen you can zoom in or out on the subject. The photo is saved automatically to the folder ‘Photos’ within the tablet applications.

  • Photo Settings
    You can adjust the flash on the camera from the photo screen; for more photo settings tap the top left of the tablet (landscape icon) and then the settings button (cog icon) and then you can adjust scene, picture size and more.

  • Record a video
    Open the Camera application from the list at the bottom of the screen (the aperture icon) and select Video. To start recording press the video camera icon. To stop recording press the same button again. The length of the video recording is restricted by the available space of your phone storage.

  • Access Photo’s & Video
    Open the Photos application to see your images and video. You can also delete, edit and share your photos and videos from the photo application.

Wi-Fi
From the shortcuts menu (drag down from the top of the screen), tap and hold the Wi-Fi icon (shaped like a fan) which opens up the Wi-Fi menu. You can now choose from available networks within the tablet signal area. Please note you must have permission and/or passwords to access third party networks. In addition the tablet manufacturer is not liable or responsible for any data breaches or software malfunction caused by using an unsecure Wi-Fi Network.

Manage Networks
You can manage your networks (once you have connected) by tapping the settings icon (cog) to the right of the network. This will provide more details on the network and also give you the opportunity to forget if required.

Warranty

  • Your JCB Tough Tablet is warranted against any manufacturing defect or malfunction which may occur in conditions of normal use for a period of 24 months from date of purchase. The battery in your tablet and the Charging Cable has a separate warranty of 12 months from date of purchase.
  • In the event your JCB Tough Tablet requires a repair under warranty you must contact www.cs@jcbphone.com who will arrange for an inspection and repair of your tablet. You must have proof of purchase which will be required when you submit your tablet for repair.
  • This product is manufactured under licence by Genuine Case Company Ltd, registered in the UK, 12199129. Genuine Case Company is an official licensee of J.C Bamford Excavators Ltd. The JCB Tough Tablet is manufactured in China.
  • The customer is responsible for posting the JCB Tough Tablet to the manufacturer (or approved repair centre). The manufacturer is not liable for any loss or damage caused as a result of the postal service used by the customer.
  • If your repair is confirmed under the terms of the warranty, the JCB Tough Tablet will either be repaired, refunded or replaced for a like for like device at the discretion of the manufacturer. Under the terms of the Warranty the repair or replacement will be undertaken within 14 days, except during Christmas holidays or exceptional circumstances.
  • Please also note, the manufacturer is not liable for any loss of data during the warranty repair process and if possible the customer should back up any data and factory reset the JCB Tough Tablet prior to sending the unit for repair.
  • The 24 month JCB Tough Tablet Warranty excludes and is not limited to the following:
    • Faults caused by software downloaded by the customer.
    • Damage caused by non-compliance with the quick start guide in terms of fitting SIM Cards, Memory Cards or Charging Ports.
    • Modification of software or hardware by the customer or third parties.
    • Abnormal use including ultra-extreme conditions of heat, cold, persistent shock (either physical or electrical).
    •  Electrical overload as a result of using a charger not bearing either European CE or new UKCA certification.
    • Water ingress and damage as a result of either exceeding the IP rating of the tablet (and therefore its stated capabilities) or as a result of the port bungs not being fitted properly prior to water immersion.
    •  Screen or chassis damage as a result of exceeding the stated drop test for the JCB Tough Tablet.
  • In no event will the manufacturer or retailer of the JCB Tough Tablet be liable for indirect, incidental or consequential damages of any type arising from the failure of this product.
  • To protect your JCB Tough Tablet and ensure you keep it operating at its best:
    • Avoid storing your tablet in very hot or very cold temperatures and do not leave your tablet in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time.
    • Do not store your JCB Tough Tablet near a microwave oven, heater, cooker or kettle.
    • If your tablet overheats turn it off immediately, remove from a charger (if connected) and allow to cool down.
    •  Do not clean your JCB Tough Tablet with anything other than a damp cloth or antibacterial spray.
    • Use a good quality charger with either European CE or new UKCA certification to ensure your battery longevity.
    • Switch your tablet off weekly and allow to charge overnight.
    • Remove unused apps and files to preserve memory and performance.

Legal Notices – Safety Precautions

Please read before using your tablet. In some cases you may be breaking the law if you don’t follow these precautions. It is the users responsibility to observe the laws in the country where the JCB Tough Tablet is being used.

Your JCB Tough Tablet

  • Do not open, take apart or attempt to repair your tablet.
  • Do not deliberately drop or throw your tablet.
  • Do not use if the screen is broken as this could cause injury.

Aircraft

Either switch off your tablet or switch it to Aircraft Mode to avoid interference.

Vehicles

Never use your tablet while driving unless it is connected to handsfree system.

Electronic Devices

In some circumstances your device may cause interference with other devices. Please be aware of any signage at venues such as hospital wards.

Potentially Explosive Environments

Switch off your tablet when in any area with a potentially explosive atmosphere, and obey all signs and instructions. Sparks in such areas could cause an explosion or fire resulting in bodily injury or even death.

Pacemakers & Other Medical Devices

Pacemaker manufacturers recommend that a minimum separation of 25cm (or more) be maintained between a wireless device and a pacemaker to avoid potential interference with the pacemaker. Operation of any radio transmitting equipment, including wireless phones may interference with the functionality of inadequately protected medical devices. Consult a physician or the manufacturer of the medical device to determine if they are adequately shielded from external RF energy or if you have any questions. Switch off your tablet in healthcare facilities when any regulations posted in these areas instruct you to do so.

Operating Environment

  • When connecting to another device, read the user guide for detailed safety instructions. Do not connect incompatible products.
  • Do not place your tablet in the airbag deployment area of a vehicle.
  • Use the tablet only in its normal operating environment.
  •  Always switch off your tablet when its use is prohibited or when it may cause interference and danger.
  • If your JCB Tough Tablet becomes excessively hot during use or charging remove it from the charger and switch off until it cools down.
  • Do not use your JCB Tough Tablet if the charging port is damaged.
  • Areas With Posted Regulations
  • Follow all signage and regulations appropriately.

Legal Notices – Environmental Policy

The manufacturer where possible uses sustainable and/or recycled materials in the manufacture of its products and packaging. At the end of its life the manufacturer will dispose of your JCB Tough Tablet in a sustainable manner free of charge if the customer is unable to do so. Please contact cs@jcbphone.com to arrange disposal of your JCB Tough Tablet if this service is required. If the user chooses to dispose of the JCB Tough Tablet please ensure this is done in a sustainable manner. Do not dispose in general household waste as the tablet contains both recyclable elements and also potentially harmful elements. Consult your local recycling facility for advice if necessary.

Legal – Manufacturer Liability

  • The manufacturer accepts no liability arising from charges incurred by the customer from use of voice, data or other services including Apps and other software charges.
  • In addition the manufacturer disclaims all liability for any claims, demands, suits or actions, and specifically but not limited to law actions under any theory of liability, arising out of the use, by whatever means, or attempts to use, third party materials including but not limited to software and aplications, hardware in the form of accessories or other devices connected to the JCB Tough Tablet.

Care & Maintenance

  •  Use only accessories that carry the CE or UKCA mark. Otherwise your JCB Tough Tablet may be damaged and your warranty invalidated.
  • Keep your tablet dry where possible. Humidity and all types of liquids may damage device parts or electronic circuits over time.
  • Do not use or store the tablet in dusty, dirty areas. Do not store the tablet in hot or cold areas. Your JCB Tough Tablet is designed to work hard, but we all need a rest.
  • Do not store your tablet near magnetic fields.
  • Do not store your tablet with metal objects such as coins or keys as they may cause abrasion to your tablet.
  •  Do not persistently drop your tablet or deliberately cause impacts to your device.

FCC STATEMENT

  • This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is subject to the following two conditions:

    1. This tablet may not cause harmful interference, and
    2.  This tablet must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation.
  • Warning: Changes or modifications not expressly approved by the party responsible for compliance could void the user’s authority to operate the equipment.
    NOTE: This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential installation. This tablet generates uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio communications.

  • However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which
    can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures:

    • Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna.
    • Increase the separation between the equipment and receiver.
    • Connect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit different from that to which the receiver is connected.
    • Consult an experienced radio/TV technician for help.

RF warning statement
The device has been evaluated to meet general RF exposure requirement. The device can be used in portable exposure condition without restriction.
