LIPPERT Gate Defender
Product Information
The Gate Defender is a jack system designed for trailers. It has a stroke of
21 inches and can handle a load of up to 700 lbs. Please note that the actual
appearance of the provided and/or purchased parts and assemblies may differ
from the manual.
Safety

Basic Jack Operation
Prior to operation, it is necessary to park the trailer on solid and level
ground. Clear all jack landing locations of debris and obstructions. If parked
on soft surfaces, use load distribution pads under each jack. Ensure that
people and pets are clear of the trailer while operating the leveling system.
Avoid lifting the trailer completely off the ground as it can create an
unstable and unsafe condition.
Unhitching from Tow Vehicle
- Check the tires of the trailer.
- Ensure the ground surface under the Gate Defender tongue jack is firm and level.
- Push the EXT button to extend the Gate Defender tongue jack until the footpad touches the ground and the coupler clears the hitch ball.
- Disconnect all electrical and mechanical connections between the trailer and the tow vehicle.
- Move the tow vehicle away from the trailer.
- Push the RET button as needed to return the front of the trailer to level.
Hitching To Tow Vehicle
- Check the tires of the trailer.
- Press the EXT button if needed to allow the coupler to clear the hitch ball. Push the RET button to retract the Gate Defender jack until the coupler properly mounts the hitch ball and the leg of the Gate
- The Defender jack is fully retracted.
- Latch the tow vehicle and connect any wires, chains, or sway control that may be equipped between the tow vehicle and trailer.
Troubleshooting Manual Override
If manual override is necessary, there are two options for each style of Jack. Use a 12-18 volt cordless screw gun or pneumatic screw gun to manually override the jacks. Avoid using an impact screw gun as it may damage the motor.

Always wear eye protection when performing service, maintenance or installation procedures. Other safety equipment to consider would be hearing protection, gloves and possibly a full face shield, depending on the nature of the task.
Moving parts can pinch, crush or cut. Keep clear and use caution.
Basic Jack Operation
Be sure to park the trailer on solid and level ground. Prior to operation, clear all jack landing locations of debris and obstructions. The locations should also be free of surface depressions and moisture. When parking on extremely soft surfaces, utilize load distribution pads under each jack.
People and pets should be clear of the trailer while the leveling system is operated. Never lift the trailer completely off the ground. Lifting so the wheels are not touching the ground will create an unstable and unsafe condition.
Unhitching from Tow Vehicle
Note: The Gate Defender is designed for vertical movement of the trailer only.
- Check the tires of the trailer.
- Make sure the ground surface under the Gate Defender tongue jack is firm and level.
- Push EXT (Fig. 1B) to extend the Gate Defender tongue jack until the footpad touches the ground and the coupler clears the hitch ball.
- Disconnect all electrical and mechanical connections between the trailer and the tow vehicle.
- Move the tow vehicle away from the trailer.
- Push RET (Fig. 1A) as needed to return the front of the trailer to level.
Hitching To Tow Vehicle
- Check the tires of the trailer.
- Press “EXT” (Fig. 2B) if needed to allow the coupler to clear the hitch ball.
- Push “RET” (Fig. 2A) to retract the Gate Defender jack until the coupler properly mounts the hitch ball and the leg of the Gate Defender jack is fully retracted.
- Latch the tow vehicle and connect any wires, chains or sway control that may be equipped between the tow vehicle and trailer
Troubleshooting
Manual Override
Note: Use of a 12-18 volt cordless screw gun or pneumatic screw gun is
acceptable to manually override the jacks. Do not use an impact screw gun to
perform any of the override procedures, as this may damage the motor. If
manual override is necessary there are two options for each style of jack.
Gate Defender Manual Override Nut:
Tools needed: Crank Handle (Fig. 3A) OR 3/4” socket and ratchet
- Locate the manual override nut (Fig. 4A).
- Place the crank handle socket end OR 3/4″ socket and ratchet over the manual override nut (Fig. 4A) and turn the override nut until the jack extends or retracts to desired position.
Gate Defender Motor Override
Tools needed: 3/8″ drive ratchet with 6″ extension

Find the port on the back side of the Gate Defender motor cover (Fig. 5A).

Remove the rubber plug (Fig. 5B).

Insert the extension and ratchet into the port.
Note : The square drive end of the extension needs to engage with the square receptacle on the gearbox. The extension might need to be twisted back and forth slightly while pushing in to make the engagement. -
Turn the override until the jack extends or retracts to desired position.
Preventive Maintenance
- For optimum performance, the system requires full battery current and voltage. The battery must be maintained at full capacity.
- Check the terminals and other connections at the battery, the controller, and the jacks for corrosion and loose or damaged connections.
- Remove dirt and road debris from jacks as needed.
