General Power Tool Safety Warnings

WARNING
Read all safety warnings, instruc-tions, illustrations and specifications provided with this power tool. Failure to follow all in-structions listed below may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury.

• Save all warnings and instructions for future reference.
• The term “power tool” in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cord-less) power tool.

Work area safety

• Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
• Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
• Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.

Electrical safety

• Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
• Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded sur-faces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerat-ors. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
• Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of elec-tric shock.
• Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carry-ing, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.
• When operating a power tool outdoors, use an exten-sion cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suit-able for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
• If operating a power tool in a damp location is un-avoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protec-ted supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.

Personal safety

• Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inatten-tion while operating power tools may result in serious per-sonal injury.
• Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as a dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal in-juries.
• Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or en-ergising power tools that have the switch on invites acci-dents.
• Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal in-jury.
• Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
• Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jew-ellery. Keep your hair and clothing away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
• If devices are provided for the connection of dust ex-traction and collection facilities, ensure these are con-nected and properly used. Use of dust collection can re-duce dust-related hazards.
• Do not let familiarity gained from frequent use of tools allow you to become complacent and ignore tool safety principles. A careless action can cause severe in-jury within a fraction of a second.

Power tool use and care

• Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was de-signed.
• Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
• Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or re-move the battery pack, if detachable, from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing ac-cessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
• Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
• Maintain power tools and accessories. Check for mis-alignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool’s operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.
• Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly main-tained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
• Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into ac-count the working conditions and the work to be per-formed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.
• Keep handles and grasping surfaces dry, clean and free from oil and grease. Slippery handles and grasping surfaces do not allow for safe handling and control of the tool in unexpected situations.

Service

• Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.

General Chain Saw Safety Warnings

• Keep all parts of the body away from the saw chain when the chain saw is operating. Before you start the chain saw, make sure the saw chain is not contacting anything. A moment of inattention while operating chain saws may cause entanglement of your clothing or body with the saw chain.

• Always hold the chain saw with your right hand on the rear handle and your left hand on the front handle. Holding the chain saw with a reversed hand configuration increases the risk of personal injury and should never be done.

• Hold the chain saw by insulated gripping surfaces only, because the saw chain may contact hidden wir-ing or its own cord. Saw chains contacting a “live” wire may make exposed metal parts of the chain saw “live” and could give the operator an electric shock.

• Wear eye protection. Further protective equipment for hearing, head, hands, legs and feet is recommen-ded. Adequate protective equipment will reduce personal injury from flying debris or accidental contact with the saw chain.

• Do not operate a chain saw in a tree, on a ladder, from a rooftop, or any unstable support. Operation of a chain saw in this manner could result in serious personal injury.

• Always keep proper footing and operate the chain saw only when standing on fixed, secure and level surface. Slippery or unstable surfaces may cause a loss of balance or control of the chain saw.

• When cutting a limb that is under tension be alert for spring back. When the tension in the wood fibres is re-leased the spring loaded limb may strike the operator and/or throw the chain saw out of control.

• Use extreme caution when cutting brush and saplings. The slender material may catch the saw chain and be whipped toward you or pull you off balance.

• Carry the chain saw by the front handle with the chain saw switched off and away from your body. When transporting or storing the chain saw, always fit the guide bar cover. Proper handling of the chain saw will re-duce the likelihood of accidental contact with the moving saw chain.

• Follow instructions for lubricating, chain tensioning and changing the bar and chain. Improperly tensioned or lubricated chain may either break or increase the chance for kickback.

• Cut wood only. Do not use chain saw for purposes not intended. For example: do not use chain saw for cut-ting metal, plastic, masonry or non-wood building ma-terials. Use of the chain saw for operations different than intended could result in a hazardous situation.

• This chain saw is not intended for tree felling. Use of the chain saw for operations different than intended could result in serious injury to the operator or bystand-ers.

• Causes and operator prevention of kickback:

  • Kickback may occur when the nose or tip of the guide bar touches an object, or when the wood closes in and pinches the saw chain in the cut.
  • Tip contact in some cases may cause a sudden reverse reaction, kicking the guide bar up and back towards the operator.
  • Pinching the saw chain along the top of the guide bar may push the guide bar rapidly back towards the oper-ator.
  • Either of these reactions may cause you to lose control of the saw which could result in serious personal injury. Do not rely exclusively upon the safety devices built into your saw. As a chain saw user, you should take several steps to keep your cutting jobs free from accident or in-jury.
    Kickback is the result of tool misuse and/or incorrect op-erating procedures or conditions and can be avoided by taking proper precautions as given below:

• Maintain a firm grip, with thumbs and fingers encirc-ling the chain saw handles, with both hands on the saw and position your body and arm to allow you to resist kickback forces. Kickback forces can be con-trolled by the operator, if proper precautions are taken. Do not let go of the chain saw.

• Do not overreach and do not cut above shoulder height. This helps prevent unintended tip contact and en-ables better control of the chain saw in unexpected situ-ations.

• Only use replacement bars and chains specified by the manufacturer. Incorrect replacement guide bars and saw chains may cause chain breakage and/or kickback.

• Follow the manufacturer’s sharpening and mainten-ance instructions for the saw chain. Decreasing the depth gauge height can lead to increased kickback.

Additional safety warnings

• This appliance is not intended for use by persons (in-cluding children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and know-ledge, unless they have been given supervision or in-struction concerning use of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety. Children should be super-vised to ensure that they do not play with the appliance.
• Carefully check the area where the tool is to be used for wildlife and pets. Wildlife and pets may be injured while the machine is in operation.
• Do not carry the chain saw by the hand guard/activation lever for the kickback brake.
• For safety reasons, the On/Off switch cannot be locked; it must remain pressed during the entire operation.
• Always make sure that the kickback brake is pushed for-ward when you are not using the chain saw.
• Always ensure all handles and guards are fitted when using the machine. Never attempty to use an incomplete machine or one fitted with unauthorised modification.

Electrical Safety
Your machine is double insulated for safety and requires no earth connection. The operating voltage is 230 V AC, 50 Hz (for non-EU countries 220 V, 240 V 50 Hz) Contact your Bosch Service Centre for details. If in doubt contact a quali-fied electrician or the nearest Bosch Service Centre.

Only extension cables of design type H07 RN-F or IEC (60245 IEC 66) are permitted for use.

When operating the chain saw with an extension cable, the following conductor cross-sections are required:

• 1.0 mm2: max. length 40 m
• 1.5 mm2: max. length 60 m
• 2.5 mm2: max. length 100 m

It is recommended for increased electrical safety to use a Re-sidual Current Device (RCD) with a tripping current of not more than 30 mA. Always check your RCD every time you use it.

For products not sold in GB:
Warning: For your safety, it is required that the plug (13) at-tached to the machine is connected with the extension cord (14) as shown. The coupling of the extension cord must be protected against splash water, be made of rubber or coated with rubber. The extension cord must be used with a cable strain relief. The connection lead must be inspected for signs of damage at regular intervals and may only be used if in perfect condi-tion.

If the supply cable on the product is damaged, it must only be replaced by a Bosch Service Centre. Only use approved extension cables.

Products sold in GB only:
Your product is fitted with an BS 1363/A approved electric plug with internal fuse (ASTA approved to BS 1362). If the plug is not suitable for your socket outlets, it should be cut off and an appropriate plug fitted in its place by an au-thorised customer service agent. The replacement plug should have the same fuse rating as the original plug. The severed plug must be disposed of to avoid a possible shock hazard and should never be inserted into a mains socket elsewhere.

• The power tool is used for sawing trees and tree trunks near the ground. Cuts can be sawed with or across the grain.

Assembly

Mounting and Tensioning the Saw Chain (see figures B1 – B4)

• Do not use any tools for assembly.
• Check the chain tension regularly during use. Using the chainsaw with a misaligned or incorrectly tensioned chain can result in chain breakage, kickback and/or in-jury.
• Upon initial operation, new chains can lengthen con-siderably.
• Avoid tensioning the chain if it is hot, as this will cause the chain to become overtensioned and fit too tightly against the chain bar when it cools down.
  • Place the chain saw on any suitable flat surface.
  • Make sure that the affixed tensioning wheel (19) on the chain bar has been fully rotated anticlockwise.
  • Slide the saw chain (18) in the slot around the chain bar (17).
  • Ensure the saw chain is in the correct running direction by comparing the saw chain with the rotation symbol (15).
  • Fit the chain links around the drive sprocket (3) and mount the chain bar (17) onto the fastening bolt (10).
  • Check if all parts are seated properly and hold the chain bar and the chain in this position.
  • Then rotate the affixed tensioning wheel (19) clockwise until the chain is partly tensioned and will stay mounted to the chain saw.
  • Attach the cover (25) and rotate the clamping knob (24) clockwise until the cover is partly secured.
  • Turn the chain-tensioning ring (23) clockwise until the correct chain tension is reached. When adjusting with the chain-tensioning ring (23), make sure to hold the clamp-ing knob (24) to prevent it from turning and clamping too early.
  • The saw chain (18) is correctly tensioned when it can be raised approx. 2–3 mm from the chain bar in the centre. This should be done by using one hand to raise the saw chain against the weight of the machine.
  • Once the correct tension is reached, hold the chain-ten-sioning ring (23) and rotate the clamping knob (24) clockwise until it is firmly secured.
  • If the chain is tensioned too tightly, unscrew the clamping knob (24) and repeat the steps for tensioning.
  • The ratchet mechanism of the clamping system prevents the chain from loosening. If the chain-tensioning ring (23) is hard to rotate, loosen the clamping knob (24) by turn-ing it anticlockwise.

Operation

The saw chain is automatically lubricated with chain oil dur-ing operation via the oil outlet (7). The chain saw is not supplied filled with oil. Be sure to fill the chain saw with chain oil before using it. It is important to use only biodegradable chain lubricants (according to RAL-UZ 48) to avoid damage to the chain saw. The recommended Bosch biodegradable chain saw oil can be found in the accessories.

Filling the oil reservoir: (see figure C1)

• Set the chain saw on any suitable surface with the oil filler cap (20) facing upward.
• Clean the area around the oil filler cap (20) with a cloth and unscrew the cap.
• Add Bosch biodegradable chain saw oil until the oil level can be viewed through the oil tank opening (21).
• You can check the oil level through the viewing window (21) during operation. When the minimum level is reached, top up with new oil.

Switching On and Off (see figure C2)

• Pull the hand guard/activation lever for the kickback brake (5) from position ➋ to position ➊ towards the front handle (4). If the hand guard/activation lever for the kickback brake (5) has not been moved, then the kickback brake has not been deactivated before use and the chain saw will not start.
• Always push the hand guard/activation lever for the kickback brake forward to the deactivated position after each use.
  • Remove the chain guard (26).
  • Hold the chain saw as shown in figure C3.
  • Pull the activation lever for the kickback brake (5) back-wards to the front handle.
  • To start the machine, first push the lock-off button for the On/Off switch (22) and then press the On/Off switch (2) and keep it pressed. When the machine is running, the lock-off button can be released again.
  • To switch off the power tool, release the On/Off switch (2).
  • The kickback brake is a safety mechanism activated by the wrist through the front hand guard (5) when kickback occurs. The chain stops immediately. This reduces the risk of kickback injury. Try to avoid kickback.
  • Periodically push the activation lever for the kickback brake (5) forward during operation to test the function of the kickback brake. Stop operation immediately if the chain saw does not stop immediately.

Note: Do not stop the chain saw after sawing by actuating the kickback brake (5).

Checking the Lubrication (see figure C4)

• Tilt the chain saw so that the chain bar is 20 cm away from a sheet of paper lying on the ground.
• Switch on the chain saw and let it run for approx. 1 minute until oil splashes can be seen on the sheet of pa-per to confirm that oil is being pulled through the auto-matic lubrication system.

Note:

• Note: Operating the chain saw without chain oil or when the oil level is below the minimum mark will result in damage to the chain saw.
• Note: Oil becomes denser at lower temperatures, which de-creases the flow rate of oil.
• Note: Saw chain life and cutting capacity depend on op-timum lubrication.

Working

• Always read the operating and safety information be-fore use.
• Always check the tool and chain condition, the oil level and correct assembly before use. Only use the chain saw if it is in perfect condition.
• Always wear suitable clothing and personal protective equipment.
• Always make sure that the environment is dry and free from obstacles and persons not involved.
• Never use the chain saw on a ladder or above shoulder height.
• Never over-reach or work with arms fully extended.
• Always hold the chain saw firmly with both hands.
• Always make sure that the power cord is routed to the rear to ensure it does not tangle with branches and equipment during cutting.

General Behaviour (see figure D)

• First time users should practise cutting logs on a saw-horse or cradle.
• Hold the chain saw at the right-hand side of your body.
• Use the gripping teeth (12) as a leverage point while cut-ting.
• The chain must be running at full speed before it makes contact with the wood.
• Reset the gripping teeth at a lower point when sawing thicker logs or tree trunks. For this, pull the chain saw slightly backwards until the gripping teeth release, and reposition at lower level to continue sawing. Do not remove the chain saw completely out of the cut.
• Do not force the saw chain while cutting, let the chain do the work.
• Always remove the chain saw from a wood cut while the saw chain is running.
• Beware when reaching the end of the cut. The weight of the chain saw changes unexpectedly as it cuts free from the wood. Danger of injury to the legs and feet.

Kickback (see figure E)

• Kickback is the sudden backward/upward motion of the chain saw, occurring when the chain (at the tip of the chain bar) comes in contact with a log or wood, or when the chain becomes jammed.
• When kickback occurs, the chainsaw reacts unpredict-able and can cause heavy injuries to the operator or bystanders.
• Particular attention must be given when sawing side-wards, slanted or during length cuts, as the gripping teeth (12) usually can not be applied.

Cutting Logs (see Figure F)

• Always secure the logs before cutting.
• Always cut the logs beyond the secured points to prevent the log from closing in and causing the chain to get jammed.
• Never allow the saw chain to make contact with the ground or cutting equipment.
• Be careful not to trip over tree stumps, branches, roots, etc.

Cutting Wood under Tension (see Figure G)

• Be extremely careful when sawing wood, branches or trees under tension. Leave saw jobs like these to trained professionals. There is a high risk of accidents.

Limbing a Branch or Tree (see Figure H)

• Limbing is removing the small branches from a fallen tree or large branch.
• Leave larger lower limbs to support the log off the ground.
• Remove the smaller limbs in one cut.

Troubleshooting

The following chart lists problem symptoms, possible causes and corrective action, if your machine does not operate properly. If these do not identify and correct the problem, contact your service agent.

Maintenance and Service

Maintenance and Cleaning
Before any work on the product, disconnect supply cord from the mains.

• Always fit the chain guard (26) on the chain bar (17) when the chain saw is not being used to prevent injury.
• For safe and proper working, always keep the power tool and its ventilation slots clean.
• Do not use water, solvents or polishes.
• Clean the chain and chain bar before storing the product for an extended period of time to prevent the parts from seizing.
• Remove the SDS cover (25), chain bar (17) and saw chain (18) and clean these parts with a brush to remove oil, sap and dust residue, especially from the saw blade groove.
• Use a clean cloth to carefully remove debris from the oil outlet (7) and drive sprocket (3). Make sure that no debris enters the oil outlet (7), as this can cause block-ages and lubrication problems.
• Carry out the required maintenance before use.
• Regularly check the chain saw for obvious defects such as loose, dislodged or damaged saw chain and chain bar, loose fixings and worn or damaged components.
• Do not modify this product. Unauthorized modifications may impair the safety of your product and may result in increased noise and vibration.
• Always empty the oil reservoir before storage and refill it before use.
• Store the chain saw in a secure, dry place, out of the reach of children.
• Do not place other objects on the chain saw.

Replacing and Sharpening the Saw Chain

• The saw chain can become blunt through prolonged use or when coming into contact with objects other than wood.
• A sharp saw chain is required for optimum performance and safety.
• Never sharpen the saw chain yourself unless you have ex-perience with it.
• Replace the saw chain with the Bosch saw chain access-ory or have the saw chain professionally resharpened.

Replacing the Chain Bar

• Only replace the chain bar if you fully understand the product and the instructions, otherwise please con-tact the Bosch Service Centre.
  • If the chain bar is worn, you can mount it upside down to extend its life, or you can replace it.
  • Use a hex key to loosen the screw between the chain bar (17) and the affixed tensioning wheel (19).
  • Once you have flipped or replaced the chain bar, reattach the affixed tensioning wheel (19).

Note: Tighten by hand until slight resistance, then add 1/8 extra turn for the required fixing. Overtightening can cause the chain bar to pinch and restrict the path of the rotating saw chain.
