Safety instructions

The safety regulations applicable in the country of use, as well as all other generally accepted rules on safety and occupational medicine, must be observed.

  • * Whenever possible, secure the workpiece against slipping, tipping over and springing up (e.g. with screw clamps).
    • Only original MAFELL spare parts and accessories must be used. Otherwise the manufacturer does not offer any warranty and does not accept any liability.
    • Adhere to the safety instructions contained in the operating manual of the chain mortising machine LS 103.

Setting up / Adjusting

Mounting instructions

  • Remove the guide plate from the chain mortising machine LS 103.
  • Remove knurled nut 17 (Fig. 1) from slot mortising device SG 230.
  • With chain mortising machine LS 103, locking bolt 40 (Fig.
  • Put the chain mortising machine LS 103 on guide columns 2 and 3 (Fig. 2) and retighten knurled nut 17 (Fig. 3).
  • Then attach parallel guide fence 6 (Fig. 1) to the guide fence carrier 14 (Fig. 2) provided for this purpose and tighten wing screws 7.

Adjusting the scale

After changing the mortising chain set scale 4 (Fig. 2) needs to be readjusted since different widths of mortising chain sets (6 – 21 mm / 1/4 – 13/16 in.) can be used.

  • To do so, loosen flat head screw 5 and wing screws 7 and move parallel guide fence 6 (Fig. 1) until it touches the mortising chain.
  • Indicator bar 8 (Fig. 2) as well, has to be moved to the 0 marking on scale 4 and retightened by means of flat head screw 5.

Operation

Operating instructions

  • The distance of the cut to be made parallel to the edge of the timber can be set by adjusting parallel guide fence 6 (Fig. 1).
  • To adjust parallel guide fence 6 loosen wing screws 7 (Fig. 2) and set the distance by means of scale 4.
  •  After adjusting, retighten the wing screws 7. Parallel guide fence 6 (Fig. 1) can also be used as an extended support; simply turn it over. The distance of a cut at a right angle to the edge of the timber can be determined by adjusting stop bows 9 (Fig. 2).
  • Loosen wing screw 10 (Fig. 1) and adjust the distance.
  • Then retighten wing screw 10. When doing horizontal cuts the weight compensating spring 41 (Fig. 3) may be released to facilitate the cutting operation.
  • Locking bolt 40 has to be turned counterclockwise as far as it will go (the flat part at the knurl is in vertical position) and after completion of the cutting operation the locking bolt has to be turned back.

With slot lengths exceeding 50 mm (1 31/32 in.) begin mortising at the right marking. When the first cut has been completed, pull out the machine, move it sideways to the left and make the second cut.

Adjusting the cutting depth
The cutting depth is continuously adjustable.

  • Loosen wing screw 12 (Fig. 2) and move depth stop ring 13 to the depth required.
  • Retighten 12 wing screw

Securing the machine against moving
sideways
When mortising vertically positioning pin 11 (Fig. 1) serves as a safety device to prevent that the slot mortising device is moving sideways. This positioning pin will perform its function once it is completely screwed into the base plate.

Maintenance

The roller bearing of the chain bar should be kept well greased. Grease gun 15 (Fig. 2) is provided for this purpose which should be pressed into the hole at the tip of the bar (only acid-free ball bearing
grease of good quality should be used)!
The chain should be immersed in thin oil every time it has been When the chain is being used very frequently it should be oiled several times a day!
Before re-tensioning the chain let it cool down.
