Specified Conditions of Use

The cordless shrub and grass shears are designed (when using the shrub shears blade attachment) for cutting small hedges and shrubs and (when using the grass cutting blade attachment) for cutting small lawns and lawn edges.

It is not permitted to use the unit with the telescopic rod as a telescopic hedge trimmer.

The user bears sole responsibility for any damage caused by inappropriate use.

Generally accepted accident prevention regulations and the safety instructions must be observed.

General Safety Information

Local regulations may limit the age of the operator.

Possible hazards:

Touching the uncovered cutting blades.
Touching the moving cutting blades.
Health detriment, due to vibration emissions, if the machine is used over a long period of time or if it not properly guided and maintained.

Special Safety Instructions

Safety Instructions

Keep all parts of the body away from the blade. Do not remove cut material or hold material to be cut when blades are moving. Blades continue to move after the switch is turned off. A moment of inattention while operating the hedge trimmer may result in serious personal injury.

Carry the hedge trimmer by the handle with the blade stopped and taking care not to operate any power switch. Proper carrying of the hedge trimmer will decrease the risk of inadvertent starting and resultant personal injury from the blades. When transporting or storing the hedge trimmer, always fit the blade cover. Proper handling of the hedge trimmer will decrease the risk of personal injury from the blades.

When clearing jammed material or servicing the unit, make sure all power switches are off and the battery pack is removed or disconnected. Unexpected actuation of the hedge trimmer while clearing jammed materal or servicing may result in serious personal injury.

Hold the hedge trimmer by insulated gripping surfaces only, because the blade may contact hidden wiring. Blades contacting a “live” wire may make exposed metal parts of the hedge trimmer “live” and could give the operator an electric shock.

Keep all power cords and cables away from cutting area. Power cords or cables may be hidden in hedges or bushes and can be accidentally cut by the blade.

Do not use the hedge trimmer in bad weather conditions, especially when there is a risk of lightning. This decreases the risk of being struck by lightning.
Persons under the age of 16 must not used the machine.

Danger of injury from the sharp edges of the blades.
Never touch the cutting blade. Wear protective gloves.

Always hold the machine firmly and ensure a firm stand on the ground. Pay attention to obstacles in the working area – danger of tripping. Keep the cutting blade well away from the body.

Examine the area to be cut and remove wire or other foreign bodies.

If the cutting blades come to a standstill due to a particularly hard branch or foreign body (e.g. wire in a hedge) and the stoppage cannot be corrected by pulling the machine back, the motor must first be switched off and the battery pack removed from the machine before the cause of the blockage can be removed manually from the cutting blade.

For other activities (e.g. removing twigs or cuttings), deposit the machine outside the working area.

Lay the machine down such that persons are not at risk.

For storage and transport, always slide on the protective covers onto the cutting blades.

Make sure that the tool is switched off before fitting the battery pack.

Operating instructions

Carefully read the operating instructions. Familiarise yourself with the controls and the proper use of the machine.
Children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the tool.
The user is responsible for injuries or material damage to other persons or their property.

Preparation

Always wear protective goggles, safety gloves, sturdy shoes and long trousers when operating the machine.
Do not switch on the tool if parts or guard devices are missing or are defective, or if an unauthorised modification has been made. Have defective parts repaired. Before use, check that the machine is assembled correctly.
Do not operate the machine if persons, especially children, or pets are nearby.

Operation

Use the machine only in daylight or good artificial light.
Use only when the user stands at ground level. Do not use on ladders or any unstable support.
Keep hands, other body parts or clothing away from the suction port and exhaust opening and do not bring them near moving parts.
Avoid adverse body positions. Keep proper footing and balance at all times, especially when working on sloped ground.
If the machine starts making unusual noises or vibrates unusually strong: Switch off the machine immediately and wait until the motor has come to a standstill. Remove battery pack. Take the following steps before restarting and operating the machine:
- check for damage;
- replace or repair damaged parts;
- check for loose parts and tighten them.
Never operate the machine with damaged protective equipment or without protective equipment.
Switch off the machine and remove battery pack.
Ensure that all moving parts have come to a standstill:
- When not in use and when the operator moves away from the tool;
- before clearing any blockages;
- before checking or cleaning the machine or before carrying out any work on the machine;
- Before making any adjustments, changing tools, maintenance or cleaning or if the machine is stored;
- after touching a foreign body in order to check the tool for damage;
- immediate checking when the machine starts to vibrate excessively.
Do not operate the machine in bad weather conditions, especially if there is a risk of lightning.
In the event of an accident or malfunction, switch off the machine immediately and remove the battery pack.

Maintenance and storage

Remove the battery pack from the machine, wait until all moving parts have come to a standstill and the machine has cooled down before making any adjustments, retrofitting, carrying out any maintenance or cleaning.
Maintain the machine with care and keep it clean.
Store the machine in a dry place out of the reach of children.
Replace worn or damaged parts for safety reasons. Use only original spare parts and accessories.

Use and handling cordless tools

Do not use faulty or deformed battery packs!
Do not open battery packs!
Do not touch or short circuit battery pack contacts!

A slightly acidic, flammable fluid may leak from defective Li-ion battery packs!
If battery fluid leaks out and comes into contact with your skin, rinse immediately with plenty of water. If battery fluid leaks out and comes into contact with your eyes, wash them with clean water and seek medical attention immediately!

If the machine is defective, remove the battery pack from the machine.

Transport of li-ion battery packs:

The shipping of li-ion battery pack is subject to laws related to the carriage of hazardous goods (UN 3480 and UN 3481). Inform yourself of the currently valid specifications when shipping li-ion battery packs. If necessary, consult your freight forwarder. Certified packaging is available from Metabo.
Only send the battery pack if the housing is intact and no fluid is leaking. Remove the battery pack from the machine for sending. Prevent the contacts from short-circuiting (e.g. by protecting them with adhesive tape).

Initial Operation

Check quick stop

Switch machine on briefly and then off again.
Have the machine repaired if braking time is clearly lengthened.

Battery pack

Charge the battery pack before use. Recharge the battery pack if performance diminishes.

Instructions on charging the battery pack can be found in the operating instructions of the Metabo charger.

In case of Li-Ion battery packs with capacity and signal display (10) (equipment-specific):
– Press the button (9), the LEDs indicate the charge level.
– The battery pack is almost flat and must be recharged if one LED is flashing.

Inserting and removing the battery pack
Removal: Press the battery pack release button (8) and remove battery pack (11) .
Insertion: Slide in the battery pack (11) until it engages.

Attaching, removing the blade attachments

Before carrying out any work: Remove the battery pack. Unintentional startup can cause serious injuries.
Danger of injury from the sharp edges of the blades. The protective cover (1) must be attached completely.

Attach blade attachment (fig. A):

Position the catch (12) as shown.
Fold the blade attachment (2) upwards and press firmly until it engages with a sound.

Removing the blade attachment (fig. B):

Press and hold both lock buttons (13) .
Fold the blade attachment (2) downwards and remove.

Note: Make sure that no dirt enters.

Use

Switching on and off

Hold the machine with one hand on the handle (7). Keep the other hand and body parts away from the blade attachment (2).
Switching on : Press and hold switch lock (5), then actuate the trigger (6) .
Switching off: Let go of the trigger switch (6) .

Thanks to the Quick stop, the cutting blades quickly come to a standstill.

Have the machine repaired if braking time is clearly lengthened.
If the cutting blades jam, switch off the machine immediately.

Work in a slow and uniform manner. Walk slowly, do not run.

Only switch on the motor, if your hands and feet are our of reach of the cutting mechanism.

Beware of injuries to feet and hands by the cutting mechanism.

Keep the ventilation openings free from foreign bodies.

Cleaning

Cleaning the cutting blade (after each use)

WARNING! Switch off the machine and remove (11) battery pack. Unintentional startup can cause serious injuries. The blade must be stationary.
Danger of injury from the sharp edges of the blades. Wear protective gloves.
Remove contamination, leaf debris etc. (e.g. with a brush or cloth)

After cleaning : Treat cutting blade with Metabo hedge trimmer care oil 6.30474 or pump spray 6.30475 (biodegradable).

Battery pack

Periodically remove the battery pack (11) and wipe the contact area of the battery pack and machine with a dry cloth and remove dust.

Maintenance

The machine must be regularly inspected and serviced. Have damaged parts repaired before using the machine.

It is advisable to have blunt cutting blades sharpened in a specialist workshop. Check cutting blades regularly for damage and have them repaired in a specialist workshop immediately if necessary.

If necessary, clean and grease the gear wheels below the blade attachments (grease, order no.: 344130930).

Storage

Remove the battery pack from the machine for storage. Store in a dry place out of the reach of children.
Permitted ambient temperature for storage: 0 °C to 30 °C.

Accessories

Use only original Metabo or CAS (Cordless Alliance System) battery packs and accessories.
Use only accessories that fulfil the requirements and specifications listed in these operating instructions.

Telescopic rod for cutting lawn edges (not included in scope of delivery, order no.: 628426000).

Only use with the grass cutting blade attachment (4).
Only use on the ground: The wheels must touch the ground.

Accessories

Attaching:

Turn rubber cap (17) by 180°, contacts become accessible.
Slide the telescopic rod (14) (as shown) onto the machine. The lock mechanism (18) must engage.
Setting the rod length and angle:
Turn the height adjustment (15) in clockwise direction, set the telescopic rod (14) to the desired length, fix the height adjustment (15) by turning in anti-clockwise direction. Check that the length can no longer be changed.
Press the button (16) and set the desired angle.
The button (16) must have engaged before working.

Repairs

Repairs to electrical tools must only be carried out by qualified electricians and only with original spare parts!

Environmental Protection

Observe national regulations on environmentally compatible disposal and on the recycling of disused machines, packaging and accessories.
Battery packs may not be disposed of with regular waste. Return faulty or used battery packs to your Metabo dealer!

Do not allow battery packs to come into contact with water!
Only for EU countries: never dispose of power tools in your household waste! According to European Directive 2012/19/EU on Waste from Electric and Electronic Equipment and implementation in national law, used power tools must be collected separately and recycled in an environmentally-friendly manner. Discharge the battery pack in the power tool before disposal. Prevent the contacts from short-circuiting (e.g. by protecting them with adhesive tape).
