Specified Conditions of Use

The angle polisher is suitable for sanding wood, plastic, filled or painted surfaces and polishing applications.
PE15-30 is particularly suited for polishing stone. The user bears sole responsibility for any damage caused by inappropriate use.
Generally accepted accident prevention regulations and the enclosed safety information must be observed.

General Power Tool Safety Warnings

WARNING – Read all safety warnings and instructions. Failure to follow the warnings and instructions may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury

Save all warnings and instructions for future reference! The term “power tool” in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power too

Work area safety

a) Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
b) Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
c) Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control

Electrical safety
  1. Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.

  2. Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.

  3. Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.

  4. Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.

  5. When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use.
    Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.

  6. If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device(RCD) protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.

Personal safety
  1. Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool.  Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
  2. Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
  3. Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energising power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.
  4. Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
  5. Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
  6. Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
  7. If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.
Power tool use and care
  1. Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
  2. Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
  3. Disconnect the plug from the power source  and/or the battery pack from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
  4. Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
  5. Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool’s operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.
  6. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
  7. Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.
Service
  1. Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.

Special Safety Instructions

General Safety Recommendations for grinding, sanding, wire brushing,

polishing and cutting-off operations:

Use

  1. This power tool is intended to function as a sander or polisher. Read all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations and specifications provided with this power tool. Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury.
  2. Operations such as grinding, sanding, wire brushing or cutting-off are not recommended to be performed with this power tool. Operations for which the power tool was not designed may create a hazard and cause personal injury.
  3. Do not use accessories which are not specifically designed and recommended by the tool manufacturer. Just because the accessory can be attached to your power tool, it does not assure safe operation.
  4. The rated speed of the accessory must be at least equal to the maximum speed marked on the power tool. Accessories running faster than their rated speed can break and fly apart.
  5. The external diameter and thickness of your accessory must be within the capacity rating of your power tool. Incorrectly sized accessories cannot be adequately guarded or controlled.
  6. Threaded mounting of accessories must match the sanding spindle thread. For accessories mounted by flanges, the arbour hole of the accessory must fit the locating diameter of the flange. Accessories that do not match the mounting hardware of the power tool will run out of balance, vibrate excessively and may cause loss of control.
  7. Do not use a damaged accessory. Before each use inspect the accessory such as abrasive wheels for chips and cracks, backing pad for cracks, tear or excess wear, wire brush for loose or cracked wires. If a power tool or accessory is dropped, inspect for damage or install an undamaged accessory. After inspecting and installing the accessory, position yourself and bystanders away from the plane of the rotating accessory and run the power tool at maximum no-load speed for one minute. Damaged accessories will normally break apart during this test time.
  8. Wear personal protective equipment. Use a face shield, safety goggles or safety goggles depending on the application. As appropriate, wear a dust mask, hearing protectors, gloves and a workshop apron capable of stopping small abrasive or workpiece fragments. The eye protection must be capable of stopping flying debris generated by various operations. The dust mask or respirator must be capable of filtering particles generated by your operation. Prolonged exposure to high intensity noise may cause hearing loss.
  9. Keep bystanders a safe distance away from work area. Anyone entering the work area must wear personal protective equipment. Fragments of a workpiece or broken accessory may fly away and cause injury beyond the immediate area of operation.
  10. Hold the power tool by the insulated gripping surfaces only when performing an operation where the accessory may contact hidden wiring or its own cord. Cutting accessory contacting a “live” wire may make exposed metal parts of the power tool “live” and shock the operator.
  11. Position the cord clear of the rotating accessory. If you lose control, the cord may be cut or snagged and your hand or arm may be pulled into the rotating accessory.
  12. Never lay the power tool down until the accessory has come to a complete stop. The rotating accessory may grab the surface and pull the power tool out of your control.
  13. Do not run the power tool while carrying it at your side. Accidental contact with the rotating accessory could snag your clothing, pulling the accessory into your body.
  14. Regularly clean the power tool’s air vents. The motor’s fan will draw the dust inside the housing and excessive accumulation of powdered metal may cause electrical hazards.
  15. Do not operate the power tool near flammable materials. Sparks could ignite these materials.
  16. Do not use accessories that require liquid coolants. Using water or other liquid coolants may result in electrocution or shock.
Kickback and related warnings

Kickback is a sudden reaction to a pinched or snagged sanding wheel, backing pad, brush or any other accessory. Pinching or snagging causes rapid stalling of the rotating accessory which in turn causes the uncontrolled power tool to be forced in the direction opposite of the accessory’s rotation at the point of the binding.

For example, if an abrasive wheel is snagged or pinched by the workpiece, the edge of the wheel that is entering into the pinch point can dig into the surface of the material causing the wheel to climb out or kick out. The abrasive wheel may either jump toward or away from the operator, depending on direction of the disc’s movement at the point of pinching. Abrasive wheels may also break under these conditions.

Kickback is the result of power tool misuse and/or incorrect operating procedures or conditions and can be avoided if suitable precautionary measures are taken as described below.

  1. Maintain a firm grip on the power tool and position your body and arm to allow you to resist kickback forces. Always use the additional handle, if provided, for maximum control over kickback or a torque reaction during start-up. The operator can control torque reactions or kickback forces if proper precautions are taken.
  2. Never place your hand near the rotating accessory. Accessory may kickback over your hand.
  3. Do not position your body in the area where the power tool will move if kickback occurs. Kickback will propel the tool in direction opposite to the grinding wheel’s movement at the point of snagging.
  4. Use special care when working corners, sharp edges etc. Avoid bouncing and snagging the accessory. Corners, sharp edges or bouncing have a tendency to snag the rotating accessory and cause loss of control or kickback.
  5. Do not attach a saw chain woodcarving blade or toothed saw blade. Such blades create frequent kickback and loss of control.
Safety Warnings Specific for Sanding Operations:
  1. Do not use excessively oversized sanding disc paper. Follow manufacturers recommendations when selecting sanding paper. Larger sanding paper extending beyond the sanding pad presents a laceration hazard and may cause snagging, tearing of the disc or kickback.
Safety Warnings Specific for Polishing Operations:

Do not allow any loose portion of the polishing bonnet or its attachment strings to spin freely.

Tuck away or shorten the loose attachment strings. Loose and spinning attachment strings can entangle your fingers or snag on the workpiece.

Additional safety instructions:

WARNING – Always wear protective goggles.

Use elastic cushioning layers if they have been supplied with the grinding media and if required. Observe the specifications of the tool or accessory manufacturer!

Accessories must be stored and handled with care in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Ensure that accessories are installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

The tool continues running after the machine has been switched off.

Do not use separate reducing bushings or adapters to adapt tools with a large hole.

The workpiece must lay flat and be secured against slipping, e.g. using clamps. Large workpieces must be sufficiently supported.

If accessories with threaded inserts are used, the end of the spindle may not touch the base of the hole on the sanding tool. Make sure that the thread in the accessory is long enough to accommodate the full length of the spindle. The thread in the accessory must match the thread on the spindle. See page 3 and chapter 13. Technical Specifications for more information on the spindle length and thread.

Use of a fixed extractor system is recommended. Always install an RCD with a maximum trip current of 30 mA upstream. When the machine is shut down via the GFCI, it must be checked and cleaned. See chapter 8. Cleaning.

When working in dusty conditions, ensure that ventilation openings are not blocked. If it becomes necessary to remove dust, first disconnect the power tool from the mains supply (use non-metallic objects) and avoid damaging internal components.

Damaged, eccentric or vibrating tools must not be used.

Pull the plug out of the socket before making any adjustments, converting or servicing the machine.

A damaged or cracked additional handle must be replaced. Never operate a machine with a defective additional handle.

A damaged or cracked hand guard must be replaced. Never operate a machine with a defective hand guard.

Reducing dust exposure:

**** Some dust created by using this power tool contains substances known to the state of California to cause cancer, allergic reaction, respiratory disease, birth defects or other reproductive harm. Some examples of these substances are: lead (from lead-based paints), crystalline silica (from bricks, cement, etc.), additives for wood treatment (chromate, wood
preservative), some types of wood (like oak and beech dust), metals, asbestos.

The risk from exposure to such substances will depend on how long the user or bystanders are being exposed.
Do not let particles enter the body.

To reduce exposure to these substances: work in a well ventilated area and wear approved protective equipment, such as dust masks that are specially designed to filter out microscopic particles.

Observe the relevant guidelines for your material, staff, application and place of application (e.g. occupational health and safety regulations, disposal).

Collect the generated particles at the source, avoid deposits in the surrounding area.

Use only suitable accessories. In this way, fewer particles enter the environment in an uncontrolled manner.

Use a suitable extraction unit.

Reduce dust exposure with the following measures:

  • Do not direct the escaping particles and the exhaust air stream at yourself or nearby persons or on dust deposits.
  • Use an extraction unit and/or air purifiers.
  • Ensure good ventilation of the workplace and keep it clean using a vacuum cleaner. Sweeping or blowing stirs up dust.
  • Vacuum or wash protective clothing. Do not blow, beat or brush.

Initial Operation

Before commissioning, check that the rated mains voltage and mains frequency, as stated on the type plate match your power supply.

Always install an RCD/GFCI with a maximum trip current of 30 mA upstream.
Always guide the angle polisher with both hands on the handles provided.

PE 15-25: Fitting of bar auxiliary handle

Always work with the bar auxiliary handle (7) attached! Fit the bar auxiliary handle as shown
(see illustration A, page 2).

  • Fit locking discs (9) to the left and right of the gear housing.
  • Fit the bar auxiliary handle (7) at the gear housing.
  • Insert the thumb screws (8) left and right into the bar auxiliary handle (7) and turn gently.
  • Adjust the bar auxiliary handle (7) to the required angle.
  • Firmly tighten the thumb screws (8) to the left and right manually.
Dust filter (depending on features)

Assembly see page 2, fig. B.
Regularly clean the dust filter. See chapter 8. Cleaning.

Installing the tools

Press in the spindle locking knob (1) only when the spindle is stationary!

Press in the spindle locking button (1) and turn the spindle by hand until the spindle locking button engages.

Installing support plate and sanding sheet

Only use the adjusting nut supplied with the support plate.
Place the support plate on the spindle as shown in the illustration. Screw on sanding sheet with adjusting nut supplied with support plate. Lock the spindle. Tighten sanding sheet with support plate manually in a clockwise direction. Release by hand or with a two-hole spanner if necessary.

Use

Setting speed

The speed can be preset via the thumb-wheel (4) and is infinitely variable. The VTC electronics make material-compatible
work possible and an almost constant speed, even under load.

Switching On and Off

Switch on first, then guide the accessory towards the workpiece.

The machine must not be allowed to draw in additional dust and shavings. When switching the machine on and off, keep it away from dust deposits. After switching off the machine, only place it down when the motor has come to a standstill.

In continuous operation, the machine continues running if it is forced out of your hands. Therefore, always hold the machine with both hands using the handles provided, stand securely and concentrate.
Switching On and Of

Switching on: Push the sliding switch (2) forward. For continuous activation, now tilt downwards until it engages.
Switching off: Press the rear end of the slide switch (2) and release it.

Working directions

Polishing:

At the start of the polishing process, start with the lowest speed, coarse polish and a lambskin or a coarse pad

Then the speed is increased, a medium polish and a medium pad are used.

A high speed is used for the finish (high gloss polishing), as well as the finest polish and the finest pad.

Polishing is done with crossover polishing, i.e. from left to right and then again from top to bottom. Here make sure not to stay too long in one spot, since the surface can heat up a lot and the surface could get damaged.

Sanding:
Press down the machine evenly on the surface and move back and forth so that the surface of the workpiece does not become too hot.

Cleaning

It is possible that particles deposit inside the power tool during operation. This impairs the cooling of the power tool. Conductive build-up can impair the protective insulation of the power tool and cause electrical hazards.

The power tool should be cleaned regularly, often and thoroughly through all front and rear air vents using a vacuum cleaner. Prior to this operation, separate the power tool from the power source and wear protective goggles and a dust mask.

Cleaning the dust filter:

if too much dust is deposited on the dust protection filter, the cooling to the motor is reduced and the motor may overheat and become damaged. Clean the dust protection filter regularly, frequently and thoroughly by vacuuming or wiping. Prior to this operation, separate the power tool from the power source or remove the dust protection filter. When working, wear goggles and a dust mask.

Troubleshooting

The electronic signal indicator (5) lights up and the load speed decreases. There is too much load on the machine! Run the machine in idling until the electronic signal indicator switches off.

The machine does not start. The electronic signal indicator (5) flashes. The restart protection is active. If the mains plug is inserted with the machine switched on or if the power supply is restored following an interruption, the machine does not start up. Switch the machine off and back on again.

Repairs to electrical tools must ONLY be carried out by qualified electricians!

These values make it possible to assess the emissions from the power tool and to compare different power tools. The actual load may be higher or lower depending on the operating conditions, the condition of the power tool or the accessories. Please allow for breaks and periods when the load is lower for assessment purposes. Arrange protective measures for the user, such as organisational measures based on the adjusted  estimates.
