INTRO

Thank you for purchasing Spendor loudspeakers.
When properly installed, these loudspeakers will bring out the best in your listening entertainment; delivering the listening experience their creators intended.

With the correct set up and care, these loudspeakers are designed to give you an enjoyable ownership experience over many years.

These Spendor loudspeakers reveal every nuance of the performance with absolute clarity and realism. To get the most out of your new loudspeakers, please read this guide thoroughly before you begin installation.

To attain the best performance, Spendor recommends that these products be installed by a Spendor Authorised Retailer/Installer.

INSTALLATION

Spendor shelf-mount loudspeakers (A1) are designed to be placed on shelving, furniture or loudspeaker stands.
They are supplied with self-adhesive feet to ensure they are located securely on furniture. They should always be placed on a solid, stable surface.

Spendor stand-mount loudspeakers (Classic 4/5, 3/1, 2/3, 1/2, 100, 100Ti) are designed to be placed on the dedicated loudspeaker stands.

CONNECTIONS

Set your amplifier to minimum volume and switch off the power. The amplifier output marked RIGHT should be connected to the loudspeaker on the right, and the amplifier output marked LEFT should be connected to the loudspeaker on the left. These instructions should be read in conjunction with your amplifier owner’s manual. Connect a twin conductor cable to the terminals on the rear of the loudspeaker.

The positive (+ or red) terminal on your loudspeaker must be connected to the positive (+ or red) terminal on your amplifier. The negative (- or black) terminal on the loudspeaker must be connected to the negative (- or black) terminal on your amplifier.

Spendor floor-standing loudspeakers (A2, A4, A7, D7.2, D9.2 Classic 200 & 200Ti) are supplied with dedicated stabiliser feet or spikes. These make a stable connection to the floor whilst allowing your loudspeakers to be levelled. This prevents loss of clarity due to unwanted movement or vibration and transfers unwanted resonant energy into the floor.

Check the connections periodically to make sure they are secure. Some Spendor loudspeakers can be bi-wired or tri-wired.

Loudspeaker cables can have a noticeable effect on sound quality. Choose a good quality cable with high purity conductors and low-loss insulation. Ask your dealer for advice on cables and connection options to suit your system.

Installation

RUNNING−IN

Your Spendor loudspeakers will benefit from a period of ‘running-in’. During this period, the stresses in the suspension system will relax and stabilise. This period is dependent on many factors and can vary from days to weeks depending on how often and how loud you play your loudspeakers. This is not a cause for concern; your loudspeakers will improve as you use them during this initial period.

It is extremely important for the loudspeakers to be properly ‘run in’ before you try and optimise the position, so don’t subject them to an extended testing session as soon as you’ve unboxed and connected them to the rest of your system.

It is unlikely you will want to do this at any extreme volume but be careful not to push them too hard straight away. Let them ease in and don’t ask too much of them. Check the power handling advice for your product.

POSITIONING – STEREO

Spendor loudspeakers are designed to operate in a wide variety of listening environments. As a starting guide, your loudspeakers should be placed 2 to 3 metres apart and a similar distance from the listening position. Try to position the loudspeakers away from the rear wall, until bass notes sound natural. Positioning closer to a rear wall may generate a degree of bass lift. The loudspeakers can be angled towards the main listening position, until the stereo imaging sounds clear and realistic. This minimises the occurrence of off-axis reflections from the side walls.

Small differences in position can make big differences to speakers’ sonic balance. Generally, placing your speakers close to the back wall will give you more bass, while putting them further away will decrease the low end you hear but should offer more convincing stereo imaging.

Positioning – Stereo

LOUDSPEAKERS USUALLY SOUND MORE FOCUSED WHEN TURNED TOWARDS THE LISTENING POSITION. AVOID SYMMETRICAL POSITIONS FROM REAR AND SIDE WALLS, AS THIS CAN CREATE STANDING WAVES IN BASS FREQUENCIES, WHICH CAN DOMINATE THE SOUND.

Attention to detail is important. Make sure the loudspeakers are both stable with the spikes and spike nuts, tightened just enough to stop any rocking or vibration. Use a spirit level to ensure both loudspeakers are perfectly level front to back and side to side, as this does impact significantly on how the sound reaches your ears.

SOUND INFLUENCES

Try not to place anything in front of the loudspeakers as this may impact the sound you will hear, due to unwanted reflections. You won’t want to leave anything sitting on top of the loudspeakers that might rattle or dampen the sound when you put your music on.

LOOK AFTER YOUR SPENDOR LOUDSPEAKERS

Never be afraid to experiment with positioning – shuffle your speakers around a bit if it helps – loudspeaker set up is as much about listening and trusting your ears as it is about following any guidelines.

And remember, never lose sight of why you bought your loudspeakers in the first place. The best way you can look after your speakers is to feed them lots of great music.
