FOH & Monitoring Setup for Vi/Si Consoles
Here is the procedure on how to do this and notes on the things to be aware
of.
Steps to Setup FOH & Monitoring/Recording Configuration
-
Connect one console to the MAIN MADI connection of the stage box and the other console to the AUX MADI connection of the stage box. Use the MAIN MADI connection at the local rack end in both cases.
-
Using the small toggle switch on the front panel of the stage box MADI card, decide which of the two consoles will be the ‘Primary’ (this console will control the mic gain, and will be able to send its outputs to the stage box. The
Secondary’ console will not be able to control gain or be able to send any outputs to the stage box). If you want the console connected to MAIN to be the
Primary’, set the switch to MAIN. Conversely for AUX.
Do not leave the switch in the RED (redundant) position, otherwise the system will not work properly! -
If the consoles were running when the MADI connections were made, you will need to either do a Fast Restart (from the power menu) on the
Secondary’ console or press the RECONFIG button at the
Secondary’ console before proceeding (much quicker if accessible!). Otherwise, theSecondary’ console will still show that it has a Stagebox connected. Note that on software V2.1 and later, the Show files that you save include a record of what hardware was present when the show was saved (eg Stagebox or not, what optional cards were fitted, etc). Therefore, you should load your previously saved show first, and then do the Fast Restart or RECONFIG on the
Secondary’ console in order to get the Stagebox to `disappear’ from the patching. If you look in Menu>System>Local you should see just two MADI cards after doing this. -
You can now patch the Stagebox R05 on the
Primary’ console in the normal way, whereas on the
Secondary’ console you use the MADI patch to receive the signals from the Stagebox. Note that the Secondary console will now behave as if it has two MADI cards fitted, rather than one Stagebox card and one normal MADI card. As long as you’re operating V2.1 software or later, on theSecondary’ desk, you will see both of these MADI cards in the MADI tab in the patch screens. You can select whichever card is actually connected to the Stagebox. The mic gain will be controlled only by the
Primary’ console. You will have digital trim on the MADI inputs of the Slave console. -
Wordclock syncing: In theory a coax word clock sync cable should be ran between FOH and Monitor positions and connected from WCLK OUT on the Primary desk to WCLK IN on the Secondary desk. In practice, we have found that not having the two consoles synced does not cause any audible artifacts in normal use due to the buffering system used in the MADI cards.
Important Points to Note
- The gain, 48V etc of the Stagebox is controlled only by the Primary console.
- You cannot use redundant cabling to the Stagebox in this configuration
- You can only send the outputs of the Primary console to the stage box – you cannot share outputs and have some from Primary, and some from Secondary.
If output sharing is required, the Optocore system can be used (one DD2FE
box at each console and at the stage box).
