Ionunit MK5 Iontophoresis Kit

KBMM Iontophoresis Kit MK5

The KBMM Iontophoresis Kit MK5 is a medical device that is designed to provide effective treatment for hyperhidrosis. The kit includes a carry case, treatment trays, cloth electrodes x 2, and an Ionunit controller.

What’s Inside Your Kit

  • Quick Start Guide
  • Charging Cable
  • USB Charger
  • Carry Case
  • Treatment Trays
  • Cloth Electrodes x 2
  • Ionunit Controller

Setting Up

Leaving the control knob in a given position for more than 5 seconds will select the treatment current. The Ionunit has three safety trips programmed into it. If any of these trips are triggered, the unit will cease operation and the voltage will run down to zero. Upon reset, operation will resume. The three trip conditions are:

  1. Over-voltage
  2. Over-current – when the current set point is set at or near maximum (20 mA) and the current momentarily rises above 20 mA during a ramp-up.
  3. Open-circuit

To reset the trips, please follow the instructions in the user manual.

  • Set up opened case on a level surface.
  • Place the cloth electrodes into the treatment trays formed by the case.
  • Connect the red connector cable from one of the electrodes to the red socket on the Ionunit controller.
  • Connect the black connector cable from the other electrode to the black socket on the controller.
  • Fill each side with warm tap water to a level that covers the areas to be treated (typically to a level half-way up the sides of the hands or feet).
  • Have a timer on hand for the treatment.
  • Clean and rinse the areas to be treated.
  • Cover any cuts or abrasions with a barrier cream such as petroleum jelly, in order to avoid concentrated current areas that could result in a stinging sensation.
  • In some cases, the local tap water may too “soft” or may not contain sufficient minerals to provide adequate conduction. Add a couple of teaspoons of non-iodised salt and/or bicarbonate of soda to each tray if required.
  • More extreme cases of problematic tap water might require the use of a standard saline solution instead.

Charging the Unit

The Ionunit can be charged using the provided charging cable and USB charger. Please ensure that the charging cable is plugged into the mains during charging.

  • Plug the USB cable into the socket at the top of the control unit and into the USB charger.
  • Plug the charger into a suitable mains outlet.
  • The orange LED indicator to the left of the display will illuminate, showing that charging is taking place.
  • Charging will be complete once the blue LED indicator to the left of the display illuminates.
  • As a safety measure, the unit will not operate while it is plugged into the mains during charging.

Under-Arm Treatment

The KBMM Iontophoresis Kit MK5 is an effective treatment for under-arm hyperhidrosis. Please visit our website www.ionunit.com for more information on the methodology for treating hyperhidrosis with iontophoresis.

  • The under-arm kit can be purchased separately (see website).
  • Thoroughly soak the double cotton socks, covering the paddles, in warm tap water.
  • Connect the paddles to the controller.
  • Under-arms should be free of deodorants or antiperspirants.
  • Ensure that the socks remain thoroughly soaked throughout, stopping treatment if necessary to re- soak them.
  • Generally, a lower current setting will be used for under-arms (typically 3 mA).
  • Run the treatment for 10 minutes (polarity one).
  • Interchange the paddles and run the treatment again for another 10 minutes (polarity two).

Operating instructions

  • Turn the control knob slightly clockwise from its fully counterclockwise position to switch the controller ON (a click should be heard).
  • After the introduction screen has timed out, choose the initial treatment current (mA) by means of the control knob.
  • The controller will select the current value that remains unchanged for longer than 5 seconds.
  • Typically, 5 mA would be selected for the treatment of hands and 7 mA for the treatment of feet
  • The controller then transitions to search mode, cycling between around 8 V and 30 V until the circuit is closed by the user placing their hands or feet into the trays
  • It is recommended to place hands or feet into the trays while the voltage is in the lower part of its range.
  • Once the user is detected, both voltage (V) and current (mA) will be displayed and ramped up until the treatment current is reached.
  • The green light to the right of the display will illuminate, indicating that treatment has begun.
  • Let the treatment run for 10 minutes (hands) or 15 minutes (feet) (polarity one).
  • The current level can be changed during the treatment by simply turning the knob.
  • Remove hands or feet at the end of the first run.
  • Swap the leads at the controller end only (red lead to black socket and black lead to red socket) or simply swap the trays to change treatment polarity.
  • Place hands or feet back into the trays as detailed above, and run the treatment again for the same length of time as the first run (polarity two).
  • Remove hands or feet at the end of the second run.
  • Rotate the treatment level knob fully counter-clockwise to switch OFF.
  • Disconnect the electrodes.
  • Empty the trays, then rinse the trays and electrodes, gently squeezing out the water from the electrodes while rinsing.
  • If a “shock” sensation was experienced when removing hands while running a treatment, the “Open-circuit” trip can be triggered on purpose to prevent this as follows.
  • Roll one hand out of the water onto the finger tips until the display indicates “Open-circuit”. Both hands can then be removed.
  • The same can be carried out for the feet, although with the hands free, the knob can just as easily be turned down before removing the feet.
  • If, following a search, the user is detected and the current starts to ramp up but does not reach the treatment value before the unit trips with “Over-voltage”, then the resistance of the circuit formed by the user and water is too high and salt or bicarbonate of soda needs to be added.
  • The user may wish to increase the default treatment current during treatment, if still comfortable. Excessive increase much beyond 10 mA is not necessarily more effective.
  • Decrease the default setting if any discomfort is experienced. Too low a setting (below 2 mA) will be less effective.
  • The illumination of a red LED to the right of the display indicates that the battery is running low and that the unit needs to be charged.
  • A good number of treatments may still be carried out beyond this point, at which time further discharge will cause the red light to blink.
  • The control unit will then turn off and reset if the battery is allowed to discharge too far. Allowing discharge to this level is not recommended.

Safety trips

Three trip conditions are programmed into the Ionunit. If any of these trips are triggered, the unit will cease operation and the voltage will run down to zero. Upon reset, operation will resume.

Over-voltage

  • This trip appears as “Over-voltage” and signifies that the voltage increased above the set safety limit of 45 V.
  • This can occur if the resistance of the circuit formed by the user and the water is too high and the unit is not able to reach the treatment current (mA) during ramp-up.
  • This can also occur during a treatment if the treatment current set point is increased and the voltage rises above 45 V in an attempt to reach and maintain treatment current.
  • Add non-iodised salt and/or bicarbonate of soda to the water to lower the circuit resistance.
  • Make sure that hands/feet are clean and devoid of any moisturisers or oils.
  • Use warm water in the treatment trays and soak the hands/feet before treatment.
  • Ideally, the voltage during treatment should lie somewhere between 10 V and 30 V.

Over-current

  • This trip appears as “Over-current” and signifies that the current increased above the set safety limit of 20 mA.
  • This condition is unlikely to occur during normal operation.
  • However, it can arise under a short-circuit condition or if the current set point is set at or near maximum (20 mA) and the current momentarily rises above 20 mA during a ramp-up.

Open-circuit

  • This trip appears as “Open-circuit” and signifies that the circuit formed by the user and the water has been broken, typically by the removal of a hand or foot.
  • For user convenience, should the user wish to remove hands and there is no one to operate the control knob, the unit may be tripped on purpose as follows.
  • Roll one hand up onto the finger tips. The voltage will then rise in order to maintain treatment current.
  • Once the voltage has increased by more than 5 V, the unit will trip on “Open-circuit” and the voltage will ramp down to zero, allowing the user to remove hands without risk of a shock sensation.

To reset the trips
The trips are reset automatically after 5 seconds.

Methodology

  • Users sit with their hands/feet in shallow trays filled with tap water while the control device passes a few milliamps of current through the water.
  • The process requires 6 to 8 treatments on average, no more than one per day.
  • The treatments can be carried out daily or even every second or third day.
  • The user then switches to a maintenance schedule of one treatment every two or so weeks or even months as required to prevent the return of hyperhidrosis.
  • In rare, difficult cases, certain prescription drugs may be added to the water.

Treating hyperhidrosis with iontophoresis:

  • Studies show that close to 100 % of users with excessive sweating have been helped.
  • During iontophoresis treatment, a very mild electric current is passed through water and into the affected areas, through the skin’s surface.
  • The treatment is non-invasive as it is applied only through intact skin.
  • There are no significant side effects, and benefits are long term with the use of a maintenance schedule.
