Installation

The weather station can be placed on a level, stable surface using the fold- out stand (22). A suitable mat should be used to prevent scratch marks on the surfaces of valuable furniture. You can also hang the weather station on a wall-mounted screw using the mounting hole (13). The screw should protrude approximately 2 cm from the wall.

To ensure optimal reception, do not place the weather station next to other electronic devices, cables or metal objects. The weather station and outdoor sensor should be at least 2 m away from sources of interference. Obstacles that impair radio communication between the two devices (such as buildings) should also be avoided. The open-air range of the radio signal is approximately 100 m. This decreases when obstacles are present.

The outdoor sensor can be wall-mounted using the mounting hole (B) on the back. You can also hang the sensor using the cable binder provided. To ensure optimal DCF reception, do not place the outdoor sensor next to other electronic devices, cables or metal objects. Do not place the outdoor sensor in a horizontal position.

Take care not to damage cables or wires during drilling and screwing. Mount the outdoor sensor on the the left or right-hand side of a window so that you can read the display easily. Ensure that the sensor is not exposed to direct sunlight, otherwise the readings may be inaccurate. For best results, mount the sensor on a north-facing wall and avoid exposure to rain.

Operation

  • Inserting the batteries into the weather station
    • Open the battery compartment cover (21) on the back of the weather station.
    • Insert three AAA batteries (not included) into the battery compartment, ensuring that you pay attention to the polarity markings (plus/+ and minus/-).
    • After inserting the batteries, all display symbols will appear briefly on the LCD display. You will hear a short beep, indicating that the weather station is ready to use. The reception symbol ( ) will flash for approximately 3 minutes. This indicates that the weather station is searching for a signal from the outdoor sensor. The backlight will turn on for approximately 10 seconds before the brightness decreases.
    • Replace the battery compartment cover.

For best results, avoid using rechargeable batteries. Rechargeable batteries provide a lower voltage (rechargeable battery = 1.2 V, conventional battery = 1.5 V) and have a lower capacity, resulting in a shorter battery life. If you do wish to use rechargeable batteries, ensure that you use special NiMH rechargeable batteries with a low self-discharge. For safety reasons and to ensure a longer battery life, we recommend that you use alkaline batteries from a reputable manufacturer

Using the power adapter

  • Connect the power adapter cable to the low voltage power-in socket (18) on the back of the weather station.
  • All display symbols will appear briefly on the LCD display. You will hear a short beep, indicating that the weather station is ready to use. The reception symbol will flash for approximately 3 minutes. This indicates that the weather station is searching for a signal from the outdoor sensor. The backlight will turn on.

If there are batteries inserted, the weather station will automatically use the power supply from the power adapter..

Inserting the batteries into the outdoor sensor

Use lithium batteries when using the outdoor sensor in cold climates (lithium batteries are less sensitive to cold weather). Alkaline batteries are sufficient for other climates.

Replace the batteries when the symbol is displayed on the weather station.

  • Open the battery compartment cover (D) on the back of the outdoor sensor.
  • Insert two AA batteries (not included) into the battery compartment, ensuring that you pay attention to the polarity markings (plus/+ and minus/-).
  • All display symbols will appear on the LCD display. The outdoor sensor is now ready to use. It will send weather data to the weather station for approximately 5 seconds and then start to search for a DCF signal.
  • Replace the battery compartment cover.

Insert the batteries into the outdoor sensor after setting up the weather station. The weather station will only be able to receive data from the sensor when the reception symbol is flashing on the weather station’s LCD. The outdoor sensor should be located at a distance of 5–10 m from the weather station.

Testing the outdoor sensor
Bring the outdoor sensor indoors and place it at a distance of 25 cm from the weather station. Wait for approximately 30 minutes until both devices have adjusted to the ambient conditions. The discrepancy between the readings on each device should not exceed 10% (humidity) and 7.2 ˚C /4 ˚F (temperature). If there is a larger discrepancy, calibrate the devices (refer to the “Calibration” section below for more information). If the discrepancy exceeds the calibration range, one of the devices may be faulty.

DCF signal reception
The outdoor sensor will start to search for a DCF signal once it has transmitted weather data to the weather station. This takes approximately 5 seconds. The synchronisation symbol  will flash on the display when weather data is being transmitted. The DCF symbol ( ) will flash on the display when the sensor is searching for a signal.

Do not move the sensor during this time. The sensor will automatically search for a signal every two hours to ensure that the time is accurate. Once a DCF signal has been received, the sensor will transmit the time to the weather station, and the weather station will display the current time together with the symbol. In areas with poor reception, it may take a several days to receive a signal.

Poor DCF signal reception should be expected when the sensor is near to metal- coated insulated glass windows, reinforced concrete, coated wallpapers or electronic devices, or when the sensor is placed in a cellar.

The DCF signal is sent from a transmitter in Mainflingen (near Frankfurt am Main, Germany) and has a range of up to 1500 km, rising to 2000 km in ideal reception conditions. The signal contains information such as the exact time and date (with a theoretical time deviation of one second every million years). You do not need to set the summer and winter time manually. The DST symbol is displayed when the weather station receives a signal for daylight saving time (summer time).

    Temperature calibration range: ±5°C (default setting = 0 °)
    Humidity calibration range: ±9 %
Air pressure calibration range: ±50 hPa

  • Press the LIGHT/SNOOZE button (12) at any time to exit calibration mode.

Daylight saving time (summer time)

  • “DST” is displayed when the DCF signal indicates daylight saving time.

Weather forecast symbols

  • The weather station calculates a weather forecast for the next 12 hours based on the pressure trend. Refer to “Symbols on the LCD display” for information on the meaning of the weather forecast symbols. Rising pressure normally indicates sunny weather.

The weather station gradually improves the accuracy of the weather forecast by adjusting the forecast to your geographical location. This process can take up to 30 days.
