Thank you for purchasing the Yamaha SILENT Brass™ Pickup Mute™.
In order to obtain the maximum performance and enjoyment from your Pickup
Mute, we urge you to read this Owner’s Manual thoroughly before using. Please
keep this Owner’s Manual in a safe place for later reference.
SPECIAL MESSAGE SECTION
SPECIFICATIONS SUBJECT TO CHANGE:
The information contained in this manual is believed to be correct at the time
of printing. However, Yamaha reserves the right to change or modify any of the
specifi cations without notice or obligation to update existing units.
Do not attempt to service this product beyond that described in the user-
maintenance instructions. All other servicing should be referred to qualia edh
service personnel.
This product, either alone or in combination with an amply err and headphones
or speaker/s, may be capable of producing sound levels that could cause
permanent hearing loss. DO NOT operate for long periods of time at a high
volume level or at a level that is uncomfortable. If you experience any
hearing loss or ringing in the ears, you should consult an audiologist.
IMPORTANT: The louder the sound, the shorter the time period before damage
occurs.
NOTICE:
Service charges incurred due to a lack of knowledge relating to how a function
or eff ect works (when the unit is operating as designed) are not covered by
the manufacturer’s warranty, and are therefore the owner’s responsibility.
Please study this manual carefully and consult your dealer before requesting
service.

Should this product become damaged beyond repair, or for some reason its
useful life is considered to be at an end, please observe all local, state,
and federal regulations that relate to the disposal of products that contain
lead, batteries, plastics, etc. If your dealer is unable to assist you, please
contact Yamaha directly.
PRECAUTIONS
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE PROCEEDING
Please keep this manual in a safe and handy place for future reference.
WARNING
Always follow the basic precautions listed below to avoid the possibility of
serious injury or even death from electrical shock, short-circuiting, damages,
fire or other hazards. These precautions include, but are not limited to, the
following:
Do not open
- This instrument contains no user-serviceable parts. Do not open the instrument or attempt to disassemble or modify the internal components in any way. If it should appear to be malfunctioning, discontinue use immediately and have it inspected by qualified Yamaha service personnel.
Water warning
- Do not expose the instrument to rain, use it near water or in damp or wet conditions, place on it any containers (such as vases, bottles or glasses) containing liquids which might spill into any openings.
If any liquid such as water seeps into the instrument, turn off the power immediately and unplug the power cord from the AC outlet.
Then have the instrument inspected by qualified Yamaha service personnel.
CAUTION
Always follow the basic precautions listed below to avoid the possibility of
physical injury to you or others, or damage to the instrument or other
property. These precautions include, but are not limited to, the following:
Connection
- Before connecting the instrument to other electronic components, turn off the power for all components. Before turning the power on or off for all components, set all volume levels to minimum.
- Be sure to set the volumes of all components at their minimum levels and gradually raise the volume controls while playing the instrument to set the desired listening level.
Location
- Do not place the instrument in an unstable position where it might accidentally fall over.
Handling caution
- Do not rest your weight on, or place heavy objects on the instrument, and do not use excessive force on the buttons, switches or connectors.
The following cautions are for your own safety and to avoid possible damage to and malfunctioning of the equipment, and thus should be observed carefully.
- Firmly insert the Pickup Mute into the bell of the instrument.
- Take care not to drop the Pickup Mute. Dropping may damage the device. It also may damage your hearing due to the loud noise that occurs. Please use caution.
- Do not touch or jab the Pickup Mute’s microphone component.

Avoid stepping on the cable.

When you are finished playing, remove the Pickup Mute from the instrument. Clean any moisture on the Pickup Mute with a cloth.
DO NOT WASH WITH WATER. -
If moisture gets on the Pickup Mute during or after playing, please dry thoroughly.
Cautions Relating to Assembly (PM1X/PM2X)
- Carefully read and follow the procedures provided in the owner’s manual accompanying the PM1X or PM2X when assembling.
- Never put your finger, etc., into the hole in the pickup mute pipe. Doing so can result in injury.
- Take care not to let the mute bump into other objects.
- Take care not to let the cable or earphones get hooked on other objects.
- To prevent the mute from falling out of the tuba or euphonium bell, make sure the pickup mute is secured to the bell using the supplied belt.

The pickup mute will not mount on instruments with a bell shape and size that differs greatly from the shape of the pickup mute.

The body cap (the cushion that is in contact with the inner surface of the bell) is a consumable item. If the part becomes worn or damaged, please consult your local Yamaha dealer.

Set up and Use
Connecting the Personal Studio STJ and the Pickup Mute
Before connecting the cable and attaching the Pickup Mute, make sure the power
is switched OFF and the earphones are removed from your ears.
- Please read the accompanying instructions for information on assembling the PM1X or PM2X.
Using the SILENT Brass
Do not disturb your neighbors during late hours.
CAUTION
Accidentally disconnecting the cable while the power is ON, or subjecting the
unit to a strong shock may cause a loud noise that can damage your hearing and
the unit. Please use caution.
Attaching the Pickup Mute
Holding the Pickup Mute in your right hand, use a rotating motion to insert
the Pickup Mute firmly into the instrument while holding the instrument
securely in your left hand.
- Please read the accompanying instructions for information on attaching the PM1X or PM2X.
Holding the French Horn
Use either of the methods shown below to support both the Pickup Mute and the
instrument at the same time.
Hold the instrument with your right hand placed over the edge of the Pickup
Mute and the base of your thumb on the Pickup Mute.| Hold the instrument with
the base of your right hand thumb gently positioned on the Pickup Mute, and
use your other fingers to hold the outer rim of the bell.

- Do not block the breather hole on the Pickup Mute when holding the instrument.
- Never apply excessive force to the cable.
- Always remove the Pickup Mute before emptying the instrument.
