Get help using and troubleshooting common issues with Alexa-compatible smart
home devices.
Getting Started:
Connect Smart Home Devices to Alexa
To control Alexa-compatible smart home devices like smart bulbs, and smart plugs, thermostats, or cameras with your voice, connect them to Alexa.
Note: Certain devices may automatically connect to Alexa using Amazon’s Frustration-Free Setup technology. To confirm if your device already connected to Alexa, check Devices in the Alexa app. If you see your device, then it already connected to Alexa and it’s ready to use.
Make sure that your smart home device is compatible with Alexa. Devices that have a “Works with Alexa” badge are compatible with Alexa.
Third-party smart home devices that use Wi-Fi and aren’t Matter certified can only connect to Alexa through a smart home skill. Complete set up for your device using the manufacturer’s app or website first. Then activate the skill in the Alexa app as needed.
Tip: Smart home Wi-Fi devices work on 2.4 GHz bands.
Important: Please read Safety Information for Using Smart Home Devices with Alexa before you activate a smart home skill.
- Open the Alexa app .
- Open Devices .
- Select .
- Select Add Device.
- Select the type of smart home device that you want to connect.
- Select the brand and follow the on-screen instructions.
Connect Smart Light Bulb to Alexa
To control smart light bulbs, such as Philips Hue, Sengled, TP-Link, LIFX, and Wyze, with your voice, connect them to Alexa.
Note: Certain devices may automatically connect to Alexa using Amazon’s Frustration-Free Setup technology. To confirm if your device already connected to Alexa, check Devices in the Alexa app. If you see your device, then it already connected to Alexa and it’s ready to use.
To connect your smart light bulb to Alexa:
- Open the Alexa app .
- Open Devices .
- Select .
- Select Add Device.
- Select Light and then select the brand you want to connect.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
Important: Smart home Wi-Fi devices work on 2.4 GHz bands.

Remove Smart Home Devices from Alexa
To remove smart home devices from Alexa, use the Alexa app.
- Open the Alexa app .
- Select Devices .
- Select your smart home device type or select All Devices.
- Select your smart home device, and then select Settings .
- Select Trash .
- Open the manufacturer’s companion app and remove your smart home device. After removing a smart home device, you may need to factory reset the device before it can be connected to a smart home hub.
You can also remove smart home devices from Alexa by resetting your smart home device. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to reset your smart home device.
Set Plugs or Switches as Lights in the Alexa App
For plugs or switches connected to lights, change their device type to Light in the Alexa app.
- Open the Alexa app .
- Open Devices .
- Select the plug or light switch.
- Select Settings .
- Select Type, and then Light.
Checking Wi-Fi Connectivity on Smart Home Devices
Try these steps to check the internet connection for your Alexa-compatible device or fix connectivity issues.
Tip: For third-party devices that use Wi-Fi and aren’t Matter certified, set up your device in the manufacturer’s app before connecting to Alexa. With some devices, you can link your Alexa account and your third-party device account in the manufacturer’s app during setup. You can also connect Alexa by activating the related skill in the Alexa app as needed.
- Open the Alexa app .
- Open Devices .
- Select your device.
- Select the gear in the top right.
- Under Wi-Fi Network, verify that the correct Wi-Fi network is visible.
- If the Wi-Fi network listed is incorrect, select Change and follow the on-screen instructions.
- You can only change the Wi-Fi network settings in the Alexa app for Amazon and Matter devices.
- If the network listed is correct but you’re still experiencing issues, check that your router is working. To determine if your Echo device or your network is the problem, check the internet connection with another device.
Note: For connection issues with third-party devices that use Wi-Fi and aren’t Matter certified, try controlling your device with the manufacturer’s app. If you can control your device with the manufacturer’s app, but not with Alexa, reactivate the skill in the Alexa app. Otherwise, check your internet connection in the manufacturer’s app. In case these troubleshooting steps don’t work, try resetting your Alexa device and smart home devices.
Connect Smart Home Device Using Bluetooth
Try these steps to connect and resolve issues for Alexa-compatible Bluetooth devices like smart bulbs and smart plugs.
To set up Bluetooth smart home devices with Alexa, just power on your smart home device. Then say, “Discover devices.” If you experience issues during setup, or if your Bluetooth device stops working, try these troubleshooting steps.
- Update your smart home device firmware. Check the manufacturer’s website or companion app for instructions to download firmware updates.
- Check if your device supports Bluetooth and Alexa. Inspect the packaging and the device for a Bluetooth logo . For Alexa compatibility, check the manufacturer’s instructions on their website or companion app.
- Place your smart home device within 30 ft (9 m) of your Echo device.
- Make sure that your Echo device software is up to date. Your Echo device software updates automatically. You can also manually check for updates by restarting your device, or by saying, “Check for updates.” If you’re using an Echo device with a screen, swipe down from the top of the display and select Settings. Then go to Device Options > Check for software updates.
- Check the instructions for your device. For detailed steps specific to your device, open the Alexa app and open Devices . Select and then select Add Device. Select your brand or your device type, then follow the instructions in the app.
- If you’re experiencing issues connecting, make sure that your device is in pairing mode. Instructions for pairing mode are usually in the device’s manual.
- If you’re still having trouble connecting Bluetooth, try resetting your device.

Troubleshooting:
Alexa Can’t Connect to My Smart Home Device Through Bluetooth
To set up Bluetooth smart home devices with Alexa, just power on your smart home device. Then say, “Discover devices.” If that doesn’t work, try these troubleshooting steps:
- Make sure that your smart home device supports Bluetooth by checking the packaging and the device for a Bluetooth logo .
- Make sure that your smart home device is compatible with Alexa by checking the manufacturer’s instructions or companion app.
- Place your smart home device within 30 ft (9 m) of your Echo device.
- Make sure that your Echo device software is up to date. Your Echo device software updates automatically.
- You can manually check for updates by restarting your device, or by saying, “Check for updates.”
- If you’re using an Echo device with a screen, swipe down from the top of the display and select Settings. Then go to Device Options > Check for software updates.
- For detailed steps specific to your device, open the Alexa app and go to Devices . Select and then select Add Device. Select your brand or your device type, then follow the instructions in the app.
- If you’re experiencing issues setting up your smart home device, make sure it’s in pairing mode.
If you’re still having trouble connecting Bluetooth devices, reset your device.
Alexa Isn’t Controlling Smart Home Devices
Smart home devices aren’t responding to commands or are responding intermittently.
- Check that your smart home device is on. If your device is battery operated, try inserting new batteries.
- Make sure your Alexa device and the Alexa app have the latest software version.
- If your smart home device uses a skill, try controlling your device with the manufacturer’s app.
- If you can control your device with the manufacturer’s app, but not with Alexa, remove and then add the skill again in the Alexa app.
- Otherwise, check your internet connection in the manufacturer’s app. If neither steps work, try resetting your Alexa device and smart home device.
- If your device is next to your router, it may not work. Move your Alexa device at least 6 ft (2 m) away from your router.
- Matter devices must connect on the same 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network as your compatible Echo device.
- For Matter devices, make sure it’s within 30 ft (9 m) of your compatible Echo device.
- If your device has a Zigbee logo , make sure it’s within 30 ft (9 m) of your hub or another connected Zigbee smart home device.
- If your device has a Bluetooth logo , make sure it’s within 30 ft (9 m) of your compatible Echo device.
- If your connected home security system doesn’t arm in a routine:
- Make sure that no monitored doors or windows are open.
- Check that the system isn’t already in an armed mode.
- Make sure that your smart home device is compatible with Alexa. Devices that have a “Works with Alexa” badge are compatible with Alexa.
If these smart home troubleshooting steps don’t work, try resetting your Alexa device and smart home devices.
Reset Smart Light Bulbs
If your smart light bulb isn’t working, or Alexa can’t discover it, reset your device.
To reset your smart light bulb:
- Go to the manufacturer’s companion app or website to follow instructions specific to your device.
- Reconnect your smart home device to Alexa in the Alexa app.
- Turn on the bulb.
Reset Your Third-Party Smart Plug
Try resetting your smart plug if it isn’t working, stopped responding to Alexa commands, or is unresponsive.
Note: Restart your device first to see if it resolves the problem. To restart, unplug the device from the outlet and plug it back in.
If you have restarted your device and it still isn’t working, try the following steps:
- Open the Alexa app, and remove your device.
- Go to the device manufacturer’s companion app or website, and follow instructions to “reset an unresponsive device.”
- Reconnect your smart home device to Alexa in the Alexa app.
