Electrical Supply Power Specifications
Cooper Lighting Solutions Ephesus LED luminaires are not traditional
incandescent lights; they are high-tech, new generation solid-state devices.
To protect your valuable investment, ensure the electrical power supply is
clean and stable with no spikes or sags.
WARNING – failure to verify power quality could result in luminaire
failure or damage.
Electrical Supply Power Configuration
The power transformer secondary feeding the site electrical distribution
system must be a three-phase, four-wire wye configuration or a single-phase
configuration. If any other supply transformer configuration is present,
notify Cooper Lighting Solutions before proceeding with installation.
Note: An ungrounded delta configuration is not an approved power supply.
WARNING – Failure to use an approved power supply configuration may
result in equipment damage.
Power Quality
Follow proper grounding methods. The electrical system must be properly
grounded for power electronics in accordance with IEEE Emerald Book, including
using equipment grounding conductors. Metallic conduits are NOT an acceptable
grounding method for Cooper Lighting Solutions LED lighting systems. Power
must also be phase balanced. If you are not sure if your power system is
grounded or load balanced, DO NOT install the luminaire and contact a licensed
electrician for information on proper grounding and balancing methods as
required by the National Electrical Code and IEEE standards.
WARNING – Failure to follow all electrical safety codes may result in
damage, injury, or death. Cooper Lighting Solutions highly recommends that
surge protection be installed in power distribution systems that feed LED
sports lighting.
WARNING – Failure to protect electrical circuits from surges may result
in damage to fixtures.
Branch Circuits
Branch power circuits feeding Lumadapt fixtures shall have a measured voltage
of within 4% of nominal voltage with no sags, swells, or transients. All
issues with supply power shall be corrected before luminaires are installed.
WARNING – Failure to provide stable power supply may result in fixture
malfunction or damage.
Note : Before installing luminaires, verify that the fixture model number
has the correct voltage configuration for your application. See fixture
specification sheet for acceptable branch circuit voltages:
https://ephesuslighting.com/wpcontent/uploads/2018/07/EphesusLumadapt-8-spec-
sheet-5-18.pdf
WARNING – Failure to confirm proper configuration may result in injury or
fixture damage. When circuiting power to luminaires, load balance all
circuits. See fixture specification sheet for power characteristic data.
Operating Conditions and Clearances
- Store luminaires in a clean, dry location protected from dirt, water, and sunlight.
- See fixture specification sheet for acceptable ambient operating temperatures
- Installer shall verify there are adequate clearances around fixture to allow for installation, aiming, and heat dissipation.
Avoiding Obstructions
The best sports lighting projects are designed using light modeling software.
Install fixtures according to the location and aiming data exported from
photometric models to achieve desired results. However, any objects in the
light path between the luminaire and the playing surface will diminish the
light levels. Some examples of obstructions are building structural members,
electrical panels, HVAC ductwork, banners, and scoreboards.
CAUTION – Do NOT install luminaires in locations that do not have adequate clearance space around the fixture. Do NOT install luminaires in locations that have objects blocking all or part of the light beam when the fixture is aimed to the designed coordinates. Therefore, before installing your lighting project, verify that there is a clear line of sight from every luminaire location to the designed aiming area, which includes not only the aiming point coordinate but also the area surrounding that aiming point. The illumination area for each fixture varies with mounting height and beam angle, but the purpose is to identify all obstructions and analyze how each will impact the light output on the playing surface, and then take corrective action as necessary to avoid the obstruction. For example, a structural beam directly in front of a luminaire will block the light from reaching the target, so in that case, the luminaire should be shifted to the side to avoid the beam. In general, fixtures can be moved up to 3’ from the designed location without affecting photometric results as long as they are aimed at the designed aiming coordinates. For significant obstructions, photometric models should be revised with accurate obstruction dimensions to provide new fixture location and aiming data that avoids the obstruction. If options are limited, consider swapping that fixture beam and aiming with a nearby fixture that allows clear line of sight to the aiming points. Consult your photometric designer for assistance with finding solutions to major obstructions for your project. Proper planning will ensure the best results for your sports lighting project. Once these steps are completed, then proceed to the luminaire installation.
Installation Instructions
Step 1 – Prepare the luminaire
Note: All fixtures that have the exact same model number are functionally identical as built from the factory. All fixtures that have the exact same model number are functionally identical. The process of addressing a fixture sets its identity within the project including assigning the fixture number, default parameters, and network address.
Note: Once you Address a fixture, be sure to physically label it with the fixture number to avoid confusion.
Luminaires MUST be fully disconnected from all power sources before addressing. Therefore, Cooper Lighting solutions recommends fixtures be addressed right in the box before installation.
CAUTION – failure to verify power is off before addressing a fixture can
cause errors in fixture settings.
Note: The Lumadapt control system provides 12V redundant power through the ethernet cabling to adjacent fixtures, so to Address a fixture that is already installed, adjacent fixtures that are directly connected by control cables must also be disconnected from power. Fixtures may be re-Addressed as needed if all power sources are disconnected for a minimum of 10 seconds before Addressing
Luminaire Addressing Procedure
-
Required Tool – Android Device
An Android 7.0 or later device with NFC capability is required to address the luminaires.
Note : NFC functionality must be enabled before addressing. -
Set Up Addressing Account
Provide your name, email, and phone number to your Cooper lighting Solutions Ephesus representative to gain account credentials. You will receive a link to a website where you will set up your account password.
Note : Remember the email used and the password you selected because these will be your credentials to log into the phone app. -
Get the Cooper lighting Solutions Lumadapt Command App
An Android phone or mobile device with Near Field Communication (NFC) is required to address the fixtures. On the Google Play Store, search for “Cooper lighting Solutions Lumadapt Command”. Download and install the app. https://play.google.com/store/apps/detailsid=com.cooperlighting.eproject Open the Command app and login with the email and password you set up through the website. -
Find your fixture list
In the Lumadapt Command app, navigate to Projects and then Fixtures.
-
Write to the fixture
Note: Turn the volume up on your device to be able to hear the NFC notification tones. Remove any protective cases to facilitate NFC transmission. Select the fixture to be addressed from the list of fixtures in your project. On that fixture page, verify the data is correct for that fixture and then tap on “Write to Fixture”.
The gray screen indicates that the device is attempting to communicate with the fixture. Hold the back of the phone directly against the front glass of the fixture, over the E logo.
Note: It may be necessary to shift the phone slightly to align your device’s NFC antenna with the fixture NFC tag.
Listen for the app NFC tones. When the app is communicating with the fixture, you will hear a series of tones. Leave the phone in that place for a few seconds while the NFC transaction occurs. Then the app will signal the addressing is complete with a different beep and a “Success” display on the screen.
The “Success” notification indicates the fixture has been properly addressed. If you do not hear the NFC tones and do notsee a Success notification, verify your device has NFC enabled, try shifting the phone position slightly during addressing, or try addressing a different fixture. Once the app displays the “Success” notification, the addressing is complete and you may proceed to the next fixture.
Verify Fixture Settings
To verify a fixture is addressed correctly or to confirm the fixture number,
Read the fixture settings. From the app main screen with the list of
venues/projects, select the three bars on the top left next to “My Projects”.
Then, select “Fixture Settings”. Click on “Read Fixture” and set the back of
the phone against the NFC tag. The app will return the fixture default
information, including the fixture number which is listed as “Lum Number.”
Label the Luminaire
Label each luminaire with the fixture number as you Address it. Recommended
label for indoor applications is white background with black lettering at
least 1/2” (1.27cm) tall. Paint markers or other methods may also be
acceptable – verify with owner. Affix label to fixture junction box or
mounting bracket in a prominent location.
Note: Cooper lighting Solutions also recommends labeling or otherwise marking the fixture number on the catwalk bracket or mounting structure to facilitate fixture identification from the catwalk or working area.
Caution – Failure to label the luminaire upon Addressing may result in improper installation and system malfunction.
Install Fixture Mounting Bracket
Lumadapt G8 fixtures come with either a Yoke or Pendant Mounting Bracket. Yoke
Attachment Options: (For Yoke bracket only. Pendant bracket is symmetrical.)
There are two different ways to install the Yoke fixture mounting bracket –
Standard and Inverted.
Standard – Use when mounting the luminaire sits on top of the mounting
structure.
Inverted is when the luminaire hangs from underneath the structure. Use
Inverted method with Cooper lighting Solutions Ephesus catwalk brackets.
Note : G8 luminaires should always be installed with antenna on top and junction box on bottom unless aiming straight down or straight up.For both the Yoke and Pendant Mounting Brackets, attach the bracket to the fixture by installing provided bolts into the sides of the fixture as shown. Tighten bolts to secure bracket to fixture but do not fully torque bolts until aiming is complete.
Note: The main ¾” Hex head bolts must be securely tightened after fixture is aimed. Do NOT tighten the set screws until after Hex bolts are properly torqued.
WARNING – Failure to properly install and tighten side Hex bolts may result in damage, injury, or death. Install set screws into sides of fixture, but do not torque until aiming is complete.
Install the Antenna
Thread the provided antenna onto the port located at the top of the fixture
and tighten securely. Always install the antenna on every fixture, even when
installing a wired control system.
CAUTION – Failure to properly install antenna can result in injury
Step 2 – Install the Luminaire
WARNING – Lumadapt fixtures may be installed oriented or tilted at any
angles but NOT rolled on their side. The heat sink fins must always remain
vertical. Do NOT install the luminaire on its side with the fins in a
horizontal alignment.
CAUTION – Failure to keep thermal fins vertically aligned will impact the fixtures ability to dissipate heat, leading to decreased output or damage to fixture.
Hardware Required | Size | Quantity per luminaire |
---|---|---|
Imperial Hex Bolt | 5/8”-3/4” | 1 |
Flat washers | 5/8”-3/4” ID | 2 |
Imperial Hex Lock Nut | 5/8”-3/4” | 1 |
Set luminaire in place and install bolt, lock washer, and nut to securely fasten the fixture mounting bracket to the mounting structure. Tighten hardware so that fixture is secure but do not fully torque hardware until aiming is complete.
Install Safety Cable
Cooper lighting Solutions strongly recommends installing a safety cable
between the fixture and the supporting structure, such as catwalk railing.
Loop one end of the cable through the safety cable port located on the bottom
edge of the fixture to the left of the junction box. Loop the other end of the
cable around a building structural component that can easily support the
weight of the fixture, such as the catwalk railing or beam.
Note : Never secure the safety cable to electrical conduits, power or HVAC equipment, other light fixtures, frangible material, or any other object not designed to support heavy loads.
WARNING – Failure to properly install fixture and safety cable may result
in damage, injury or death. Secure safety cable to a structural component at a
point above and directly behind the fixture if possible. Leave enough slack to
allow fixture aiming, then pull extra cable through the locking clip.
Recommended safety cable is Gripple model #HF3-LT-5ft or equal.
Step 3 – Make Electrical Connections
Install power and control cables
Always turn all fixture power sources OFF before performing any work on power
or control wiring.
WARNING – Failure to disconnect all power sources may lead to damage,
injury, or death. Insert power cord and ethernet cables through the cord grip
on the fixture junction box.
Note : For ease of installation, insert ethernet cables first to allow
connectors to fit through, then insert the spade and fork pre-terminated end
of the power cable.
Leave cord grip nut loose until cables are connected.
Plug the pre-terminated power cables on to the spade connectors inside the fixture junction box. Connect the ground cable to the ground screw.
NOTE : Verify that each connector is fully seated and secure.
WARNING – Failure to properly connect power wiring may result in damage
or injury
If not using an Cooper lighting Solutions-supplied Lumadapt power cable, a recommended power cable is SOOW style 3C cable with a minimum of 14AWG annealed stranded bare copper per ASTM B-174 with a minimum temperature range of -40˚C to +105˚C. Cable must be water resistant, UV rated/sunlight resistant, UL listed and CSA certified for indoor and outdoor use. Caution – do not strip outer jacket of power cord back more than 3.5” (8.89cm) to avoid pinching wires in junction box cover upon reassembly.
Note: Always use cable and connectors that are fully rated for the
project environment.
Recommended Power cable termination connectors for the power cable:
Wire | Description | Recommended Part Number (or equal) |
---|---|---|
Line and Line/Neutral | Quick disconnect Spade Terminal, .25” Female, fits | |
14AWG, Fully insulated, 600V, 105C rated min | TE Connectivity/AMP 3-520121-2 | |
Ground | Fork Spade Terminal, Fits 14 AWG, Insulated, 600V, 105C rated min, | |
fits #10 Screw | TE Connectivity/AMP 53245-1 |
Plug the control cables into the ethernet ports in the fixture junction box. Follow all wiring instructions provided in project drawings. Verify all cables are secure.
WARNING – Failure to verify all wiring connections are fully seated and secure may result in damage or injury.
Install Junction Box Cover
Carefully guide the junction box cover into place against fixture.
Note : Clear all wires from edge of junction box to avoid pinching wires.
WARNING – Failure to prevent wires from being pinched in junction box cover may result in damage or injury.
Install provided bolts as shown to secure junction box cover to fixture and tighten securely. Push slightly on cables toward the junction box to relieve any tension on cables entering junction box, then tighten cord grip nut around cables to secure cables in place.
Step 4 – Aim the Luminaire
Aiming the luminaires is a critical part of the LED lighting solution to
ensure that light is evenly distributed on the playing surface. There are two
basic methods to properly aim a sports venue – Precision Laser Aiming by
Coordinates, and OrientTilt.
Precision Laser Aiming by Coordinates Method – Laser aiming is the most
effective and preferred technique for aiming Ephesus LED sports lighting. This
method uses a laser mounted to the luminaire to point the fixture at a
predetermined point on the playing surface using (X,Y) coordinates. Unless
otherwise noted, aiming coordinates on Ephesus photometrics or project
Installation drawings are based on the origin (0,0,0) placed at center field,
court, or ice. All dimensions from that point are in feet along the playing
surface unless otherwise noted.
Orient –tilt Method – With the Orient-tilt method, the installer turns the luminaire according to predetermined angles. This technique is extremely helpful for pre-aiming fixtures mounted on a cross arm on the ground before the lighting pole is lifted up and set in place. However, this method is less accurate due to the variances in actual final pole and luminaire locations and orientations compared to the approximated parameters used in the photometric design.
Orient angle Refers to the direction the luminaire faces in the Z-plane. Mount the luminaire to the structure securely, but do not fully torque the mounting hardware so that the fixture and mounting bracket can spin about the mounting bolt within the aiming area. Set the luminaire Orient by rotating the luminaire mounting bracket relative to the mounting structure.
Note: Unless otherwise noted, Orient values shown in Ephesus photometrics
or project Installation Drawings are based on 0˚ being Plan East. Plan East
means 0˚ is heading to the right side of the sheet as you hold it in front of
you, which is not necessarily geodetic or True East.
Tilt angle Refers to the direction the luminaire faces in the Y-plane.
When the luminaire is securely mounted to the structure so that the mounting
bracket does not move but the side Hex and Set screws are loosened, the
fixture may rotate up inside the mounting bracket. Set the luminaire Tilt
angle by rotating the fixture head relative to the luminaire mounting bracket.
Luminaire Aiming
- Insert the calibrated aiming laser onto the fixture aiming pin located at the top of the fixture.
- Verify aiming mount is fully seated. If laser assembly is not fully seated tight against the fixture back, any movement in the laser will cause aiming to be inaccurate.
- Slightly loosen fixture side bolts and mounting hardware as necessary to allow fixture to rotate and tilt.
- Locate the correct aiming coordinate on the playing surface. Turn on the laser and rotate and tilt the fixture until the laser dot is on the aiming point.
- Tighten fixture hardware.
- Verify that the luminaire did not shift during hardware tightening and that the laser is still on the aiming point.
- Remove the laser mount from the fixture and proceed to the next luminaire.
Note: Turn laser on only when actively aiming the luminaire. Between aiming fixtures, turn laser off to conserve laser battery power.
After final aiming is complete, tighten all fixture and mounting hardware to the following torques:
Hardware | Size |
---|---|
Side Set screw | 50-80 in-lbs |
Side Hex screw | 35-45 ft-lbs |
Mounting bolt/nut | 70-80 ft-lbs |
Step 5 – Finishing Touches
- To complete the installation, verify that all mounting, connection, and aiming work is finished.
- Verify all electrical connections are tight and secured. The installer is responsible for the integrity of all connections.
- Verify all bolts and screws are tightened and properly torqued.
- Straighten up all cabling. Tie down all cables neatly. For all outdoor projects, use UV rated tye wraps and wire management.
- Remove all construction debris and tools from site.
System Operation
Understanding Luminaire Function
Note: When power is turned on, the luminaires will turn on to their default settings on until a control signal is present. Default parameters are set during the Addressing process.
Note: Fixtures may look slightly different from each other when viewed from the front due to variations in operating settings such as color temperature and beam width. This is normal.
The G8 is designed to use 10 channels of streaming ACN (sACN) for control. The G8 has 8 white light sources that are controlled as a group, and 4 RGBA sources that are controlled as a separate group. These control features are active only with the purchase of upgrade packages.

Creating Scenes and Dynamic Effects
By modifying the sACN values across luminaires in your system, you can create
dynamic effects. The type of effects will vary based on the nctionality of the
front-end control system.
Care and Maintenance
Fixture Care and Maintenance
All luminaires are prepared with a powder-coated finish. The finish on
exterior luminaires may weather over time, depending on the environmental
conditions at the installation site. Proper care of the luminaires will
maintain their performance and appearance. Follow a regular maintenance
schedule to retain optimal light output and thermal performance. Remove any
dirt, leaves and other foreign debris from the luminaire housing. Wipe the
optical lenses with a clean, dry, cotton cloth to remove dust and other
contaminants. A non-abrasive optical cleanser may be used periodically
Do NOT use any abrasives such as car wax, brass cleaners or other polishes or chemicals on the luminaries. These may scratch, remove, or damage the protective coating.
Troubleshooting
The G8 luminaire is designed to provide many years of reliable quality lighting. If the system appears to not be operating correctly, perform the following steps:
Gather Data
The first step is always to find out as much about the issue as possible. Ask
the following questions:
- How many fixtures are not operating correctly? If only one fixture is not responding, continue investigating at that fixture itself. If a group of fixtures are not responding correctly, start at the source of the power or controls for that group.
- Have any obvious external forces been in the area? For instance, were any riggers, electricians, or other workers near the fixtures or controls? Have there been any power disturbances in the facility such as lightning storms?
Verify The Basics
- Run the system through some different control scenes, including all on (Game mode) and then all off (blackout mode). Take note of any fixtures not responding correctly to the scenes.
- Is the power supply on, at the proper voltage, and stable? Have an electrician measure the voltage at the fixture to confirm.
- Check connections at the source and at the fixture. Have an electrician check the connections inside the fixture junction box if necessary. WARNING – Always remember to disconnect power from the luminaire before opening the junction box.
Fixture Reset
If a fixture is not responding correctly to controls, reset the fixture by
turning all power sources off for at least 10 seconds. This includes the
branch circuit power to the fixture in question as well as any fixture
directly connected to it.
Note: The G8 is designed to receive redundant low voltage control power from adjacent fixtures through the control cable. Therefore, the fixtures with control cables that are directly connected to the fixture to be reset must also be powered off at the same time for at least 10 seconds.
Fixture Replacement
If you have attic stock fixtures available and need to replace a fixture,
simply follow the installation instructions in this manual to replace the
fixture in question. Be sure to address the replacement fixture with the
correct luminaire number. When you address the new fixture, the new fixture
serial number will be uploaded and the fixture should become active in the
system.
Note: After replacement, please allow a few minutes for the system to
recognize the new fixture.
