Introduction

Overview

The DRM-R1 provides an open-ended rack-mountable frame 19 inches wide, by 2 RUs high, by 9 inches deep for holding and powering AJA Mini-Converters (sold separately). This frame accepts the newer, largest-size Mini-Converters as well as smaller ones. The original DRM-R0 frame (no longer available) only accepted the three smaller sized Mini-Converters.

NOTE: The largest Mini-Converters extend above the 2RU chassis height. One additional RU of empty space above the DRM-R1 frame is required for these large Mini-Converters. The DRM-R1 frame contains 12 converter mounting slots and accommodates a variety of converter configurations:

  • Up to 12 smaller converters—D4 (1.71″, 43.5 mm tall) or D5 Series (2.4”, 61mm tall) and others of similar size (one slot each).

IMPORTANT: Because of heat-related issues, the 3GM Mini-Converter cannot be used with a DRM frame.

  • Up to 6 larger converters—HD10 (3.1″, 79 mm tall) or ROI Series and FIDO-4 Series (3.9”, 99 mm tall) and others of similar size (two slots each). Only the newer DRM-R1 frame accepts the largest size ROI and FIDO-4 converters. The original DRM-R0 frame does not accommodate the largest size (3.9”, 99 mm) converters.

NOTE: The total power required by all the installed Mini-Converters must be less than the DRM-R1 frame maximum of 50 Watts. Refer to the individual Mini-Converter specifications, available on the AJA website and in each converter’s documentation, to calculate the total power for your DRM’s converter configuration. Ensure the total power required for the converters you install do not exceed 50 Watts. Some DRM slots may need to be left empty to stay within this limit.

  • Mini-Converters of different sizes can be mixed in the frame. However, because larger converters take two slots, the total number of smaller converters that can be added to a frame is reduced by one for each larger converter present. For example, with one larger converter installed, only 10 smaller converters can be added.

Mounting hardware for the converters comes in multiple sizes to accommodate the four different-sized Mini-Converters.
The frame includes a 110/220VAC (12-Amp) power supply. Twelve +5V power leads are provided via a wiring harness from the main power supply to power the converters. The DWP/DWP-U/DWP-U-R1 power supplies are not required but can be used if desired rather than the supplied frame power supply and the harness power connections.
A front cover plate is also available as an option (Figure 1).AJA-VIDEO-

Installation

Rack Mounting

The DRM-R1 is a standard 19 inch wide 2-RU tall wide rack mount frame. The three smaller sized Mini-Converters fit within that height, and can be rack mounted with other gear immediately above the DRM-R1. However, the largest size Mini-Converters extend above the 2-RU chassis height. Additional empty space above the DRM-R1 frame is required for these largest Mini-Converters (Figure 2).AJA-VIDEO-SYSTEMS-DRM-R1-Mini-Converter-Rack-Mount-Frame-

Mini-Converter Mounting Hardware

Converter mounting hardware comes in multiple sizes for different converters (Figure 3):AJA-VIDEO-SYSTEMS-DRM-R1-Mini-Converter-Rack-Mount-Frame-
fig-3

Two types of hold-down brackets are available:

  • A double mounting bracket that secures two smaller converters
  • A single mounting bracket that secures one larger converter

Three standoff sizes are available to fit the variously sized mini- converters:

  • Short standoffs for smaller FiDOs and others of the smallest sized converters (uses the double mounting bracket)
  • Medium standoffs for the HI5, HA5, and others of the next sized converters (uses the double mounting bracket), and for the UDC and others of the larger sized converters (uses the single mounting bracket)
  • Long standoffs, for FIDO-4, ROI and other of the largest sized converters (uses the single mounting bracket)
The larger converters using tall standoffs require two mounting spaces because of the size and layout of the frame. With this in mind, the converters can be mixed and matched in the frame. However, only same-sized smaller converters can be paired in one space.

Example:

  • Six FIDO-TR converters require 6 mounting spaces using 3 double brackets and 3 small standoffs, and 6 HA5’s require 6 mounting spaces using 3 double brackets and 3 medium standoffs. This arrangement fills the frame to capacity.
  • Six 3GDA’s require 12 mounting spaces, 6 single mounting brackets and 6 medium standoffs. This arrangement fills the frame to capacity.
  • Three HD10DA’s require 6 mounting spaces, 3 single mounting brackets and 3 medium standoffs. That leaves 6 unused spaces for mounting up to 6 smaller FiDO’s using 3 double mounting brackets and 3 short standoffs.
  • Six FiDO-TR’s require 6 mounting spaces using 3 double brackets and 3 small standoffs. That leaves 6 unused spaces for the following:
    • Two Hi5’s using 2 spaces, one double mounting bracket and a medium standoff.
    • Two HA5’s using 2 spaces, one double mounting bracket and a medium standoff.
    • One ROI-series converter, using 2 spaces, one single mounting bracket and a long standoff. Note that this particular configuration supports 11 converters, because the large converter occupies two slots.

There are many possible combinations but these examples demonstrate some of the options available using the DRM-RO frame.

Installation Procedure

Install the converters in the DRM frame as explained below and as shown in Figure 4 :

  1. Determine the size of standoff and mounting bracket required for the converter you plan to install.
  2. Position a star washer and standoff over a hole in the bottom of the frame where you want to mount a converter or converters.
  3. Insert a screw from the underside of the frame through the hole, washer, and standoff, and tighten the screw to anchor the washer and standoff in place.
  4. Position the converter(s) within the chosen slot(s) next to the standoff.
  5. Place the bracket over the converter(s) and align the bracket hole(s) with the standoff.
  6. Cinch the bracket down tightly to the converter and standoff. Small converters require a wing-nut inserted through a flat bracket. Large converters require a screw inserted through a spacer bracket.
  7. Repeat the process for as many converters as you want to install.
  8. Connect signal cables and the power connector to each mini-converter.
  9. Rack mount the DRM frame, reserving 3-RU spaces if any of the largest converters are installed, or might be installed in the future. Otherwise, 2-RU spaces are sufficient.
  10. Connect the AC power cord to the DRM-R1 and plug it into a 100–240VAC outlet.

Optional Front Cover Installation

The DRM-R1 front cover is available as an option. The cover has a slot on its rear side that inserts into a flange on the lower front surface of the chassis (Figure 5).AJA-VIDEO-SYSTEMS-DRM-R1-Mini-Converter-Rack-Mount-Frame-
fig-5

  1. Clear any internal power cables from the chassis flange.
  2. Insert the slot on the rear of the cover into the chassis flange. If the chassis is already mounted in a rack using standard rack screws, the cover should be able to slide in front of the screws, and remain removable. If thick-headed or thumb-screws are used, the two upper screws will need to be removed and replaced to install or remove the front cover.
