- The surface condition determines the performance of the tape.
Before the application of the tape, the surface is exposed to various contamination such as dust, moisture and oil. In order to maximize the adhesive performance of the tape, the surface condition is very important. Therefore, there is a need to keep the surface clean.
Polluted substances | Washing of surface |
---|---|
Fingerprint, Moisture | Ethyl alcohol, IPA, Toluene |
Oils, Grease | Normal heptane (n-heptane) |
nasty Oil and Grease | MEK (Methyl ethyl ketone) |
☞ A cleaning agent that can be easily purchased by general consumers is ethyl
alcohol.
Remove surface contaminants as much as possible with a dry cloth or cloth, and
wipe the surface several times with ethyl alcohol.
There is no slipping on the surface, and when it dries sufficiently, you may
attach a tape.
※ Examples of changes in adhesion according to surface conditions
The test the change of adhesion in the external environment (fine dust
concentration 70, ultra-fine dust concentration 42).
Adhesive performance degradation test method
- After exposing the surface, attach the tape.
- After exposing the tape, attach it to a clean surface.
☞ When the test is carried out in ②, it is more effective as a test method for
lowering adhesion performance.▲ The graph above
shows the adhesion performance according to the degree of exposure to fine
dust.
Indoors, 95% level after 2 hours.
☞ After cleaning the surface, it is the same as 95% level when attaching after
2 hours
The level of 80% is expected when 4 hours have elapsed indoors, and even less
than 50% is expected if more than a day passes. Therefore, it is judged that
attaching without washing does not exhibit 50% of the adhesion performance,
and it can be easily separated from the attachment site.
Outdoors, after 30 minutes, 92% level.
☞ It is 59% after 2 hours outdoors, indicating that the adhesion performance
is very serious if contaminants such as dust are not removed.▲ The graph above shows the adhesion performance according to
the degree of exposure to fine dust.
At a temperature lower than room temperature, the change in adhesive
performance is more severe.
☞ Adhesive performance varies depending on the cleanliness of the surface, and
temperature is also one of the factors affecting the adhesive performance.
The conditions for good adhesion performance
-
As in section 1, clean the surface before attaching.
-
After removing the liner of the tape, attach it immediately. (minimize exposure time to airborne dust, etc.)
-
Attach it to the object first, and wait until the adhesive performance is maximized. (average 24h , min 1h)After attaching, wait at least 1 hour
-
Make the surface temperature as warm as possible before attaching. (A hair dryer can be used)
Surface temperature: 25~35℃ (77~95℉) or higher (Enough to feel the warmth) -
Requires compression after attaching to the fixed surface: 1 inch by 1 inch – 5kg or more – 20 seconds or more Apply pressure immediately upon attachment.
A push force applied by an adult is sufficient. -
Attachment Precautions
① Check whether there is a groove in the attachment
Groove depth 0.4mm or less: 1.1T or more applied
Groove depth 1.0mm : 1.1T not applicable, 2.0mm or more applicable
If the groove depth is more than 1.0 mm, refrain from applying
② Consider the area of the tape by referring to the allowable weight according
to the material of the surface.
For example, it can be seen that the allowable range of a tape of a certain
size changes with weight. ②-1. Heavy
stuffIncrease the amount
of tape to be attached to make the area larger and attach it.
②-1. Light stuff
No problem even if you attach the tape wide. No problem even if you attach the tape small.
Even if a light object is attached with a small amount of tape, attach it to
the four corners so that it can be supported.
③ Applicable Exceptions.
If the load is distributed as in ②, there is no problem, but if the center of
gravity is biased forward, it may fall even after attachment.
For example, if there are different shaped objects with the same weight (Δ),
the amount of tape required for attachment is the same. As shown in the figure
below, A did not fall, but B and C will.☞ The load
on an object is the product of the weight of the object and the length to the
distance to the center of gravity of the object.a. Length to center of gravity : Aα, Bα, Cα
b. Weight of objects A, B, and C : Δ
c. Tape Thickness : β
d. The load the tape can withstand : N
e. quantity of tapes : A (4ea), B (4ea), C (2ea)
A | B | C |
---|---|---|
Not falling | Falling | Falling |
4xβxN ≥ ΔxAα
Since the length of Aα is short, there is little change in weight.| 4xβxN <
ΔxBα
Because “Bα” is long, the weight increases by a multiple of “Bα”| 2xβxN < ΔxCα
the weight increases as much as a multiple of “Cα”
C is sphere shape and not easy to attach, so the load that the tape can
withstand is doubled because only two are attached.
※ Do not apply tape to circular objects as much as possible. There is a risk
of damage due to falling.’
Tape Specifications for Surfaces
- Tape Size for 1 pound
Material Surface| Width| Length| Load
---|---|---|---
Metal ; Stainless Steel| 1.0 inch| 0.7 inch| 1 POUND
Glass| 0.8 inch
Painted Panel| 1.0 inch
Plastic ; ABS| 1.0 inch
Wood| 1.2 inch
For example, a 2.0 lbs frame ① Material check: ABS
② Identify the required quantity of tape : 4ea
③ Tape size : 1in by 0.5 in ; (1 in by 0.5 in) x 4ea = 2.0 lbs
④ After cleaning the surface, attach. ※ It is safe to attach a little larger
than the calculated standard as shown in the diagram.
