Installation Overview

Test the Transducer Prior to Installation

WARNING! Always make sure that conditions are safe before walking on the ice.
NOTE: The control head ports are keyed to prevent reversed installation, so be careful not to force the connectors into the wrong ports.

  1. Connect the power cable to the control head and the battery terminal adapter. See your control head installation guide for instructions.

  2. Connect the transducer cable to the control head. See Connecting the Transducer Cable.

  3. Lower the transducer into the ice hole.

  4. Power On: Press the POWER key. While the Title screen is shown on the display, press the MENU key. Select Normal mode, and press the RIGHT Cursor key to start Normal mode. If you have an ICETM Flasher Series control head, turn the Power/Range dial to A (Auto) or x1 to power on the control head. If all connections are correct and power is available, the Humminbird control head will enter Normal operation.

  5. If the transducer is working properly, you will see the bottom on the sonar view.

  6. Power Off: Press and hold the POWER key.
If you have an ICE Flasher Series control head, turn the Power/Range dial to Off.

  7. Remove the transducer from the ice hole.

  8. Disconnect Cables: Disconnect the transducer and power cable from the control head.
Disconnect the power cable terminals from the battery until installation is completed and you’re ready to fish.

Assembling the Transducer and Float

Follow these instructions to assemble the transducer and float.

  1. Attach your transducer float to the transducer cable by sliding the cable through the slit in the float.

  2. Position the float so that the transducer will be submerged in the water, just below the ice. Positioning the Float ice layer
NOTE: The transducer must be submerged in water for reliable transducer detection. The bottom of the transducer should be even with the bottom of the ice or hang slightly below the bottom of the ice.

  3. Once you know where you want to position your float, place the cable clamp onto the transducer cable, above the float. Make sure that the cable is taut, so that the transducer hangs straight down (see Attaching the Cable Clamp).

Connecting the Transducer Cable

This section covers how to connect your transducer cable to your control head. Refer to the correct illustrations and instructions for your installation type.

CAUTION! Do NOT mount the cables where the connectors could be submerged in water or flooded.
If cables are installed in a splash-prone area, it may be helpful to apply dielectric grease to the inside of the connectors to prevent corrosion. Dielectric grease can be purchased separately from a general hardware or automotive store.

1. See the illustration, Connecting to the Portable Base, below.
If your control head base includes a jumper port to the left of the control head (as you face the front of the portable bag), proceed to step 2a.
If your control head base does not include a jumper port, proceed to step 2b.
2a. If your control head base includes a jumper port, plug the transducer cable into the jumper port in the portable base.

2b. If your control head base does not include a jumper port, insert the transducer cable into the appropriate port on the rear of the control head. The ports are keyed to prevent reversed installation, so be careful not to force the connector into the port. If the cable connector feels tight, lightly coat the outside of the connector with silicone grease. See your control head installation guide for additional information.

NOTE: If you have an ICE 55 Flasher, remove the control head and base from the portable bag to connect the transducer cable, then reinstall it in the portable bag.

Setting up Ice Fishing on the Control Head

Use the instructions for your Humminbird control head model in the section below to start ice fishing.
If your Humminbird control head is an ICE Series model (ICE Series, ICE HELIX® CHIRP Series, etc.), use the following instructions to get started using the control head for ice fishing. See your control head operations manual for operations instructions.

  1. Power On: Press the POWER key.

  2. While the Title screen is shown on the display, press the MENU key. Select Normal mode, and press the RIGHT Cursor key to start Normal mode.
NOTE: If you wait too long to select a start-up option, the system will start the mode that is already highlighted. If your control head goes into Demonstration mode, please note that menu settings cannot be saved in this mode. See your control head operations manual for more information.

  3. If the transducer is working properly, you will see the bottom on the sonar view.

Confirm the Connected Transducer: Depending on your control head model, you may have to select the connected transducer in the menu system. To confirm the transducer, go to Main Menu > Sonar > Connected Transducer.

If your Humminbird control head is an ICE Flasher Series model, use the following instructions to get started. See your ICE Flasher Series manual for operations information.

  1. Power On: Turn the Power/Range dial to A (Auto) or x1 to power on the control head.
  2. If all connections are correct and power is available, the Humminbird control head will enter Normal operation.
  3. If the transducer is working properly, you will see the bottom on the sonar view.

If your Humminbird control head is NOT an ICE Series model (ICE Series, ICE HELIX CHIRP Series, etc.) or ICE Flasher Series model, use the following instructions to configure the control head for ice fishing.

  3. Main Menu: Press the Menu key twice. Select the Sonar tab.

  4. Select Ice Fishing.

  5. Press the RIGHT Cursor key to turn Ice Fishing mode On.
When Ice Fishing mode is On, the Flasher View displays the sonar data in traditional flasher format with additional features including Zoom and Depth Cursor. See your control head operations manual for details.
When Ice Fishing mode is Off, the Flasher View displays Real Time Sonar (RTSTM) data in a traditional flasher format.

  6. Confirm the Connected Transducer: Depending on your control head model, you may have to select the connected transducer in the menu system. To confirm the transducer, go to Main Menu > Sonar > Connected Transducer.

  7. Down Imaging® models only: If the control head is a Down Imaging model, select Digital Depth Source from the Sonar tab. Press the RIGHT or LEFT Cursor keys to select 2D Element.

  8. Close: Press the EXIT key until the menu system is closed.

Storing the Transducer

When you are done fishing, store the transducer according to the control head installation guide instructions, using the following guidelines:

  1. a. If you have a Humminbird portable bag, wipe the cable dry, then unplug the cable from the jumper port and tuck the cable and the transducer in the front pocket of the portable bag, under the control head. Make sure all the zippers on the portable bag are closed.
    OR…
    b. If you have an ICE Flasher Series control head, wipe the cable dry, then tuck the float under the control head, wrap the cable around the cable posts, and store the transducer in the transducer well in the front of the portable bag. You do not have to detach the transducer cable from the control head.

  2. Unplug the power cable when not in use.

CAUTION! Although the transducer cable is designed to be flexible in cold temperatures, you must store your cable correctly to avoid stressing it. Make sure it is coiled smoothly, with no kinks, and that it is clear of the zippers on the portable bag.

Maintenance

If your transducer remains in the water for long periods of time, slush, algae and other marine growth can reduce the effectiveness of the transducer. Periodically clean the face of the transducer with a mild, marine-safe and plastic-safe soap or solution.
If your transducer remains out of the water for a long period of time, it may take some time to wet the transducer after it is returned to the water. Small air bubbles can cling to the surface of the transducer and interfere with proper operation. These bubbles will dissipate with time, or you may wipe the face of the transducer with your fingers after the transducer is in the water.
