SteelCentral Packet Analyzer Plus Installation

Before You Start

Before you begin installing Riverbed® SteelCentral Packet Analyzer Plus, you should check that the hardware and software you have available meets the minimum requirements for running Packet Analyzer Plus. In addition, you should check your existing user accounts to ensure you know how many users will run Packet Analyzer Plus, and that they have appropriate privileges for doing so.
Packet Analyzer Plus requires a system with the following hardware and software configuration:

Operating System Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, Windows 10, Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2019

Packet Capture Software WinPcap or Npcap (or both) must be installed on the Windows host in order

for Packet Analyzer Plus to analyze traffic running over local interfaces, and Packet Analyzer Plus will warn you if neither of these is installed. If you have Wireshark installed, WinPcap is included as part of the Wireshark installation. Alternatively, you can download and install WinPcap explicitly from h ttps:// www.winpcap.org/ , and Npcap from https://nmap.org/npcap/ . You will need to restart Packet Analyzer Plus if you install either of these after starting Packet Analyzer Plus. Note that Packet Analyzer Plus has been certified against Npcap 1.55, 1.31, 1.10, and 0.94. If you experience any unusual behavior with the local system interfaces, please install one of these versions of Npcap and restart Packet Analyzer Plus.
Adobe Acrobat Reader This is not necessary to be able to install Packet Analyzer Plus, but Adobe Acrobat Reader must be installed on the Windows host in order for Acrobat PDF files to be opened and readable.
Host Hardware A dual-core 2.0 GHz CPU or better
Available Disk Space Base installation : approximately 300MB Plus : additional space for generated reports or trace files
Memory 2 GB or more of system memory
Video Hardware and Settings A graphics card with a minimum resolution of 1024 x 768
Display Settings Text size: 100% (default) – displayed text may be truncated when a larger text

size is used – see Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Display
Note: Packet Analyzer Plus can be installed on the same system with Packet Analyzer version 10.x. Packet Analyzer is used to interface with NetShark appliances; Packet Analyzer Plus is used to interface only with AppResponse 11 appliances.

Determine Your User Requirements

Before starting an installation, determine if only the current user or all users with access to the Windows system will run Packet Analyzer Plus. To enable all users on a computer to run Packet Analyzer Plus, the installer must be run by a user with administrator privileges. If the installer is executed with administrator privileges, the default option is “Install for All users.” If the installer is run by a non- administrator user, Packet Analyzer Plus will be installed for that user only.
Note: In order for Packet Analyzer Plus to work properly, the user’s User Account Control Settings in the Windows Control Panel must be set to its default level.

Licensing Information

After installing SteelCentral Packet Analyzer Plus, its user interface opens, but a license is required to activate it. License activation is handled through SteelCentral Packet Analyzer Plus itself.

  • A license is purchased from Riverbed and provided as a product
    • If you are upgrading your installation from NetShark and Packet Analyzer to AppResponse 11 and Packet Analyzer Plus, the appropriate number of Packet Analyzer Plus licenses are provided in your upgrade Instructions for upgrading from NetShark to AppResponse 11 are provided at the Riverbed support portal.
    • If, previously, you had used Packet Analyzer with concurrent license instances, those instances will be replaced with an equal number of Packet Analyzer Plus
  • The product key is entered to request a Administrator privileges are required.
  • The Riverbed License Portal is contacted automatically to validate the key and activate the

Install SteelCentral Packet Analyzer Plus

  1. Download the SteelCentral Packet Analyzer Plus installer from the Riverbed web
  2. Based on your user requirements for the computer, open the installer using one of the following
    User Installer: Double click the installer The first screen of the Setup Wizard appears.

    Click I Agree to continue, or close the window to cancel. You can interrupt the Setup Wizard by clicking the close button (the X in the top right corner). If you interrupt the Setup Wizard, any steps performed already are rolled back, leaving the computer in its original state.
    Admin Installer. Right click the installer file and choose Run as administrator.

The default settings install SteelCentral Packet Analyzer Plus for all users of the system. To install for use by a single user only, select Install for current user only.
Click I Agree to continue, or close the window to cancel. You can interrupt the Setup Wizard by clicking the close button (the X in the top right corner). If you interrupt the Setup Wizard, any steps performed already are rolled back, leaving the computer in its original state.

  1. When a single-user installation completes, a Start the application check box is selected by default. Packet Analyzer Plus loads after you click Close. When an all-users installation completes, click Close

Note: Packet Analyzer Plus can be removed or reinstalled using Windows Control Panel > Programs and Features. See Removing or Reinstalling SteelCentral Packet Analyzer Plus for details.

Activate the License

Obtain a product key from Riverbed, either for an evaluation license or a perpetual license. To activate a Packet Analyzer Plus license:

  1. Launch a Packet Analyzer Plus

  2. If you are installing and starting Packet Analyzer Plus for the first time, the License dialog appears by default, and you will be prompted to activate the
    If Packet Analyzer Plus has been activated already, you can choose Menu > License to display the License dialog and check the license status or deactivate the current license and activate a different product key.

  3. Type the product key, then click Activate, as shown

Removing or Reinstalling SteelCentral Packet Analyzer Plus

Once the software has been installed, use Windows Control Panel > Programs and Features to remove or reinstall the product, or re-run the installation wizard.

Note: Administrator privileges are required to deactivate a product. If removal is initiated by a user without administrative privileges, they are asked to supply administrator credentials. The dialog below is displayed if the user declines to provided administrative privileges, and allows the user to interrupt the installation wizard.
