USING INSTRUCTION

PRECAUTION

INTRODUCTION

  • Thank you for purchasing the 42mm filtration system (hereafter also referred to as “the filter”) manufactured by HydraPak.
  • Use the 42mm filtration system only with HydraPak hydration items including a 42mm opening.
  • When used as intended the 42mm filtration system effectively removes common waterborne bacteria, such as E. coli (99.9999%), and parasitic cysts (99.999%) per EPA Guide Standards and NSF P231 and microplastics (99.999%) per NSF 42 greater than or equal to 3.0 microns in size through capture within the hollow fiber membrane.
  • Please note: This filter does not filter out viruses.
  • DO NOT FREEZE DOES NOT FILTER SALT WATER DOES NOT FILTER VIRUSES DO NOT USE WITH OTHER FILTER SYSTEMS HANDLE WITH CARE TO AVOID DAMAGE CAP AND FILTER DO NOT DETACH AVOID GETTING UNTREATED WATER ON DRINKING SURFACE DISINFECT BEFORE STORAGE USE RESPONSIBLY

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Read this owner’s manual and compare the capabilities of this unit with your actual water treatment needs. It is recommended that, before purchasing a water treatment unit, you have your water supply tested to determine your actual water treatment needs.

GENERAL WARNINGS

  • Read and understand this entire user guide carefully before assembling or using your filtration system. Failure to follow the instructions in this user guide or misuse of the filter may result in serious illness.
  • YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR SAFETY. PLEASE USE GOOD JUDGMENT.
  • There are hazards associated with the use of water filtration systems. Drinking untreated water may result in exposure to harmful microorganisms and can increase the risk of gastrointestinal illness.
  • You must handle the filter with proper care. Any dropping, compressing, cutting, and general rough handling of the filter may damage the hollow fiber membranes. The hollow fiber membranes inside the filter cage should not be touched by fingers, tools, or even water passing through at higher pressures (such as from a water faucet or hose). It is important to avoid air or vapor lock. Air or vapor lock can occur when air gets trapped within the filter and blocks the flow of water. If air or vapor lock occurs, squeeze a small amount of fresh water through the filter to get the filter to function properly.
  • The cap and the filter part do not detach.
  • This filter is not intended for use by children under 13 years old.
  • If you have any questions on the proper use of the filter, please contact HydraPak Customer Service at www.support.hydrapak.com or info@hydrapak.com.

WARNING REGARDING WATER

  • Filtered water = water reserved for drinking after a simple filtration.
  • Drinking water = water from the tap, chemically disinfected or water disinfected by boiling.
  • Do not use water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality without adequate disinfection before or after the system. Systems certified for cyst reduction may be used on disinfected waters that may contain filterable cysts.
  • The performance of the filter may vary based on local water conditions. Not all contaminants reduced by the filter are necessarily found in local water supplies.
  • For best performance, use the clearest and purest potable water available. A high turbidity water will degrade the performance and shorten the lifespan of the filter.
  • Never use the filter with seawater, brackish water, or chemically contaminated water, such as water from mining ponds, industry, or near agricultural operations. The filter will not make water from these sources drinkable.
  • Never allow the nozzle and the upper part of the filter to come in contact with untreated or contaminated water. Clean off and dry any water that is on the outside of the vessel before use or drinking.
  • Do not ingest unfiltered water as this can increase the risk of illness. Always use your filter with the hydration vessel – never directly on or in water.
  • Do not filter any liquid or substance other than water through your filter. 42mm Filtration system should only be used with water at temperatures above 4° Celsius (39°F) and below 50° Celsius (122°F).
  • If you intend to participate in cold weather activities or anticipate that you will encounter freezing temperatures, it is important to prevent freezing of the filter which can permanently damage the filter media.
  • Drain your filter and bring it into your tent or even your sleeping bag if freezing is likely.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

First use instructions

  • Familiarize yourself with the filtration system at home or in a test environment before using it in more adverse conditions. Before first use:
  • Remove clear plastic film from the blue filter cage
  • Flush 1L of drinking or tap water through the filter by squeezing the vessel.

Standard use instructions

  • Open the vessel by holding the upper part of the vessel and unscrew the 42mm filtration system.
  • Fill the vessel using the best water source available (as mentioned above).
  • Never allow the nozzle and the upper part of the filter to come in contact with untreated or contaminated water.
  • Close the system by screwing the Filtration System assembly onto the vessel.
  • Clean off and dry any water that is on the outside of the vessel before use or drinking.
  • Squeeze or roll the flexible bottle or water vessel to help push water through the filter but do not squeeze the filter itself so as not to damage it.
  • Drink or pour into other bottles and containers directly from the nozzle.

CLEANING AND STORAGE

  • It is recommended that the system is regularly cleaned to prevent clogging. The filter must be disinfected before storage to prevent microbiological growth within the hollow fibers.

To Clean

  • Gently agitate the Filtration system in a container of drinking water. Doing this will dislodge any extra-large particulates that might be clogging pores in the filter.
  • Do not wash the Filtration system with soap or full-strength antiseptic.
  • Do not put it in the dishwasher.
  • Never use sharp objects to clean the filter.

To Disinfect

  • Fill a 0.5-liter container with filtered or treated water and 4 drops of ordinary household bleach.
  • Pour the solution into the vessel. Close the system by screwing the cap and attaching the filter clockwise.
  • Squeeze the entire amount of water through the hollow fibers.
  • Shake off excess water and allow the components to air dry completely before reassembling the system. Always store in a dry, shaded environment.
  • Note: When removing the filter from long-term storage, flush the system with 2 liters of clean water to remove any stale-tasting water by filling the vessel and squeezing the water through the filter.

EXPECTED LIFETIME – FILTRATION CHANGE

  • The life span of the filter depends entirely on water quality. To extend the life of your filter, you should clean it regularly and always use the clearest and purest water source available.
  • For optimum filter performance replace the filter after a year of use, 1500 liters of flow, or if the flow has significantly slowed or stopped. Older filters will naturally have a lower flow rate and may not be suitable for intended use.
