2. ELEPHANTWALLTM Topple Barrier Installation Instructions

2.1 Important Notes
  • 2.1.1. Complete a visual inspection of the ELEPHANTWALLTM for any obvious damage that may have occurred to columns or guardrails during shipping.
  • 2.1.2. Guardrails may be attached to both sides of the ELEPHANTWALLTM Topple Barrier.
  • 2.1.3. The Installer shall be responsible for all required lay down area to be used during install.
  • 2.1.4. The Installer shall be responsible for supplying all required tools and handling equipment for unloading and installation purposes.
  • 2.1.5. Ensure you have all the required materials, parts, components, and equipment for the installation.
  • 2.1.6. Note that shims are not permitted when installing the ELEPHANTWALLTM. Instead, each ELEPHANTWALLTM column allows for ±0.5″ of vertical adjustment (for a total of 1″ vertical adjustment). When dealing with uneven ground, it may be necessary to use more columns per section, by using shorter guardrails, to increase the total vertical adjustment over uneven ground.
2.2 Safety Information
  • 2.2.1 The ELEPHANTWALLTM has been rated in accordance with CSA S16-14 (R2019) for a single load of 9,500LBS acting vertically or horizontally on any rail.
  • 2.2.1.1 Guardrails must not be greater than 8′ in length to achieve this load rating.
  • 2.2.1.2 At the start and finish of each run of elephant wall, an additional piece of guardrail is required at the top and rear of the first and last section of elephant wall. Please refer to the applicable ELEPHANTWALLTM drawing.
  • 2.2.2 Each height of ELEPHANTWALLTMTM column requires a specific minimum number of rails to meet rating standards (see ELEPHANTWALLTM Column Specifications below).
  • 2.2.3 Corner brackets are required for configurations that utilize a 90-degree angle.
  • 2.2.4 Concrete shall be 4,000PSI, 6″ thick, reinforced with steel wire or fiber mesh, uncracked at base plate location.
  • 2.2.5 Guardrails that show any damage must be replaced.
  • 2.2.6 Columns shall only deform when the load rating is exceeded. Columns that have deformed shall be replaced. (Small local deformation at the point of contact is expected and acceptable.)
  • 2.2.7 Following an impact with the ELEPHANTWALLTM, all anchors must be verified for torque in accordance with the Titen HD Anchor Instructions included in the appendix of this manual. Any anchors that have become loose must be escalated to the facility engineer for resolution and the affected section of the ELEPHANTWALLTM is no longer rated for the stipulated load.
  • 2.2.8 Must be installed by a qualified rigger who is experienced in lifting steel safely and professionally.
  • 2.2.9 ELEPHANTWALLTM cannot be used as racking.
  • 2.2.10 Safety glasses, CSA/OSHA approved steel toes boots, and hard hat are required for the installation for the ELEPHANTWALLTM. This should be considered a minimum level of PPE; all personnel in the vicinity of the ELEPHANTWALLTM during installation shall adhere to the facility’s PPE requirements, or this minimum standard, whichever is most demanding.
  • 2.2.11 The ELEPHANTWALLTM presents a falling hazard if left standing without it being properly and fully secured. Each column requires a minimum of 8x mechanical anchors, as specified in the drawing, and must be tied to a second, fully secured column, via at least 2x guardrails.
2.3 Additional Recommended Equipment (Not Supplied)
  • Narrow Scissor Lift
  • Miniature dollies with heavy duty castors
  • Diablo ¾” drill bits
2.4 Installation Steps

2.4.1 Verify all necessary equipment has been delivered/supplied.

2.4.2 Double check and mark your area measurements before placing the first column.

2.4.3 Carefully lift and rotate the column into the correct orientation. Rigging and hoisting
with straps is permitted.
Note: Installers should use site-specific safe lifting device for columns.

2.4.4 Move the column into your desired position.

2.4.5 Lift the guardrail into place with loose bolts.

2.4.6 Position the next column in place and secure to the guardrail.

2.4.7 Tighten the guardrail bolts to secure in place.

2.4.8 Continue placing columns and guardrails.

2.4.9 Make any necessary adjustments.

2.4.10 Drill holes for the floor anchors. Each column requires 8 anchors. Follow the Titen HD Installation Instructions included in the appendix of this manual.

2.4.11 Vacuum the dust from the drilling.

2.4.12 Secure the floor anchors in place. In the event that the anchors are stripped during installation, immediately escalate this to the facility engineer for resolution. This section of the ELEPHANTWALLTM is not safe nor is it rated for the stipulated load.

2.4.13 If the ELEPHANTWALLTM utilizes a right-angle section (such as the walk- thru), use the 90-degree corner brackets to attach the sections together. The number of corner brackets required is equal to the number of guardrails.

2.4.14 Ensure that each section-end has the extra support guardrail installed at the top on both ends.

2.4.15 Check to make sure all bolts and anchors are secure.

2.4.16 It is now safe to load the space.

3. ELEPHANTWALLTM Parts

  • Guardrails are available in 2′-8′ lengths
  • Columns are available in three types: Standard, Walk-Thru and Wide Walk-Thru.
  • A fourth narrow ELEPHANTWALLTM column is also available but has a lower load rating and increased foundation requirements. Contact the manufacturer to inquire if this solution is right for you.
  • Corner Bracket (required for all configurations utilization a 90-degree angle)

Contact the manufacturer for replacement parts.

5. Maintenance

ALL anchors of the ELEPHANTWALLTM shall be inspected manually at least annually. All loose anchors shall be escalated to the facility engineer for resolution. Loose anchors degrade the performance of the ELEPHANTWALLTM.

All guardrails and columns shall be visually inspected for deformation at least quarterly. Any deformed guardrails shall be immediately replaced as they degrade the load rating of the ELEPHANTWALLTM. Any columns found to have suffered significant deformation, as a result of an overload, shall be replaced.

6. Warranty Statement

7. Appendix

7.1 Titen HD Anchor Installation Instructions

Important Notes

  • Holes in steel fixtures to be mounted should match the diameter specified in the information below.
  • Use a Titen HD screw anchor one time only — installing the anchor multiple times may result in excessive thread wear and reduce load capacity.
  • Do not use impact wrenches to install into hollow CMU.
  • Caution: Oversized holes in base material will reduce or eliminate the mechanical interlock of the threads with the base material and reduce

Installation Sequence

Installation Steps

  1. Drill a hole in the base material using a carbide drill bit the same diameter as the nominal diameter of the anchor to be installed. Drill the hole to the specified embedment depth plus minimum hole depth over drill (see additional information below) to allow the thread tapping dust to settle and blow it clean using compressed air. (Overhead installations need not be blown clean.) Alternatively, drill the hole deep enough to accommodate embedment depth and the dust from drilling and tapping.
  2. Insert the anchor through the fixture and into the hole.
  3. Tighten the anchor into the base material until the hex-washer head contacts the fixture.

Additional Installation Information

  • Anchor Diameter: 3/4″
  • Wrench Size: 1 1/8″
  • Recommended Steel Fixture Hole Size: 7/8″ to 15/16″
  • Minimum Hole Depth Overdrill: 1/2″

Suggested fixture hole sizes are for structural steel thicker than 12 gauge only. Larger holes are not required for wood or thinner cold-formed steel members.
