IDEAL WAREHOUSE INNOVATIONS Slide-Effect Dock Bumper
SLIDE-effectTM Dock Bumper
The SLIDE-effectTM Dock Bumper is a patent-pending dock bumper designed to move up and down with the action of the trailer being loaded. It is available with or without a bumper mounting plate and can be installed using wedge anchors or by welding the bumpers/brackets, or a combination of both methods.
Installation Instructions & Owners Manual
This installation guide covers installation of a SLIDE-effectTM Dock Bumper without any custom bracketing. The most common method for installing bumpers and brackets is using wedge anchors. For added convenience during installation, having bumpers factory-welded to the bracket can save valuable installation time.
CAUTION
The bumper pad assembly requires clearance above and below the finished installation location of the bumper to move up and down with the action of the trailer being loaded. Ensure enough clearance exists using the dimensions provided in the manual.
Step 1: Determine Bumper Mounting Style
Determine the bumper mounting style based on your requirements:
STANDARD, P1 Left, P1 Right, or P2.
Step 2: Determine Bumper Mounting Location
Determine the bumper mounting location based on your requirements: LEFT, RIGHT, STANDARD, or P1. Review individual approval drawings for exact sizes.
Step 3: Separate Wall Bracket from Laminated Bumper Assembly
Separate the wall bracket from the laminated bumper assembly.
Step 4: Install Wall Bracket at Location
Install the wall bracket at the desired location. Ensure that the Stopper Plate side of the wall bracket is at the bottom of the bracket.
Anchoring Fastening Method
- Mark the location of mounting holes on the wall. Ensure that any hole is distanced a minimum of 4.5 inches away from the edge of the bumper.
- Drill the hole using the recommended drill bit size for the anchor being used.
- Blow the hole clean of dust and other material. Do not expand the anchor prior to installation.
- Position the washer on the anchor and thread on the nut. Drive anchor through the bumper/bracket into the anchor hole until the nut and washer are firmly seated against them, and the bumper sits flat on the wall surface. Be sure the anchor is driven to the required embedment depth.
- Tighten the anchor by turning the head 3 to 5 turns past finger tight.
Bumper Welding Fastening Method
Note: Welding the bumper to the dock door jamb and some types of dock leveler curb angles is not recommended. Verify with dock leveler contractor for accurate information.
For extra strength, 3/4 x 5-1/2 Wedge Anchors (P/N 60-7531) are available from Ideal Warehouse Innovations. If the actual dock height is less than 46 inches, an above dock riser bracket may be required to provide proper dock protection.

CAUTION
- Create a highly visible barrier around the area you will be working. The Portable Safety Zone or RapidRoll® Portable Barrier System, both by Ideal Warehouse Innovations, are excellent tools for this.
- Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment such as gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection and protective shoes.
- Loading dock bumpers are installed directly onto the dock wall or welded to bumper mounting brackets before being installed onto the dock wall.
Tools required for installation
- Measuring tape
- 2’ level
- Hammer drill with a 3/4” drill bit
- Welding equipment (depending on installation method)
Methods of Installation
The most common method for installing bumpers and brackets is using wedge
anchors. The alternative method, if sufficient embedded steel is available, is
to weld the bumpers/brackets or to use a combination of both methods (e.g.
weld one side, anchor the other). For added convenience during installation,
having bumpers factory-welded to the bracket can save valuable installation
time.
This installation guide covers installation of a SLIDE-effect™ Dock Bumper
without any custom bracketing.
Anchors
- For concrete installation, use a minimum 3/4” diameter x 4-1/2” wedge anchors.
- Minimum hole depth is 4”
- Effective embedment depth is 3.25”
- Installation torque is 110 lbs
- Minimum edge distance is 4.5”
For extra strength, 3/4″ x 5-1/2″ Wedge Anchors (P/N 60-7531) are available from Ideal Warehouse Innovations.
- 84” is the most common inside dimension for centered mounting of dock bumpers where no dock leveler exists. If a dock leveler exists, it is common to weld the inside edge of the dock bumper to the curb angle of the dock leveler pit, if the curb angle exists and is in good enough condition to support this type of anchoring. The best mounting style in this case is a “P1” style bumper.
- If the actual dock height is less than 46”, an above dock riser bracket may be required to provide proper dock protection.
Step 1: Determine Bumper Mounting Style
Step 2: Determine Bumper Mounting Location
NOTICE
SLIDE-effect™ Dock Bumpers are designed to move up and down with the action of the trailer being loaded. Clearance for this movement of the bumper pad assembly is required above and below the finished installation location of the bumper. Ensure enough clearance exists using the dimensions at right.
The 9/16” dimension is the space from the mounting surface to where the
sliding bumper pad assembly sits.
This is for the standard 4” projection bumper and is the minimum clearance
from building wall. This clearance increases with additional projection units.
Review individual approval drawings for exact sizes.
Step 3: Separate Wall Bracket from Laminated Bumper Assembly
Step 4: Install Wall Bracket at Location
For STANDARD style bumper configuration:
- Follow the “Anchoring Fastening Method” instructions to install anchors into both sides of the bracket.
For P1 style bumper configuration
- Follow the “Anchoring Fastening Method” instructions to install anchors into the outside holes of the bracket.
- Follow the “Bumper Welding Fastening Method” instructions to weld the inside edge of the bracket.
- IMPORTANT: Ensure lefts and rights are used, with the Stopper Plate at the bottom of the bracket.
For P2 style bumper configuration
- Follow the “Bumper Welding Fastening Method” instructions below to weld the outside and inside edge of the bracket.
Anchoring Fastening Method
- Mark location of mounting holes on the wall. Make sure that any hole is distanced a minimum of 4.5” away from the concrete or brick wall edge.
- Using a drill bit whose diameter equals the anchor diameter, drill holes with depths of at least ½” more than your embedment depth. The tolerances of the drill bit used must meet the requirements of ANSI Standard B212.15.
Bumper Welding Fastening Method:
Note: Welding bumper to the dock door jamb and some types of dock leveler curb angles is not recommended. Some older designs do not have enough structural integrity to support against shocks transmitted from trailer impact. However, many later dock leveler models are formed using sound structural methods and may be able to support this type of installation. Verify with dock leveler contractor for accurate information.
Position Wall Bracket at its location; make sure it sits flat on the wall surface and installed location of bumper will not interfere with leveler operations. Tack weld bracket to the dock steel structure first. Finish welding by applying 0.25” wide and 2” long weld at 3 places on each welded side.
Step 5: If Tilting Bracket is supplied and NOT PRE-WELDED for Decline Approaches (If not, skip to step 6)
- Align bumper face perpendicular to dock approach ramp angle by pulling out on the bottom edge of the tilting bracket.
- Clamp bumper in place and weld seam on both sides of the bumper.
Step 6: Slide the Laminated Bumper Assembly into place over Wall Bracket
