Product Usage Instructions
Changing the Shaft Seals:
- Work with utmost cleanliness throughout the process.
- Always replace complete shaft seals, avoid using individual components.
- Avoid using used parts; ensure all components are new.
- Prior to installation, inspect friction and sealing surfaces for cleanliness and signs of damage.
- Apply a thin film of compressor oil on the sealing elements – seal ring, shaft seal cover, O-ring, and compressor shaft.
- During installation, ensure the pressure spring locks into the pulling groove of the crankshaft.
- Centrally align the shaft seal cover to the compressor shaft and tighten the fastening screws evenly.
- After installation, manually rotate the compressor shaft a few times to check for refrigerant leaks before mounting the motor, flywheel, or coupling.
Special Note for Compressors FK30, FK40, FK50:
If changing the shaft seal is required, also replace the felt insert of the
integrated leaking oil trap device.

FAQ
-
Q: Can I reuse individual components of the shaft seal?
A: No, it is recommended to always replace complete shaft seals to ensure proper functioning. -
Q: What type of oil should be used for coating the sealing elements?
A: Use compressor oil to apply a thin film on the seal ring, shaft seal cover, O-ring, and compressor shaft.
Safety instructions
-
Refrigerating compressors are pressurized machines and therefore require particularly careful and meticulous handling.
- Only qualified staff are allowed to handle refrigerating compressors.
- Local safety regulations, accident prevention regulations, technical rules and other valid specifications must be observed.
- The maximum tolerable operating overpressure may not be exceeded (not even for test purposes).
Caution! The compressor is under pressure.
-
Points to be observed before working on the compressor:
- Switch off the machine and safeguard it from being inadvertently switched on again.
- Close the suction and discharge shut-off valves.
- Relieve the machine from the system pressure.
- To simplify work and in order to proceed properly when replacing a shaft seal, we recommend our Bock service case, which contains all necessary tools and auxiliary items.
-
After replacing the shaft seal:
- Connect up the safety switch.
- Evacuate the compressor.
- Lift the switch-on safeguard.
Before switching the compressor on again, it is vitally important to check that the suction and discharge shut-off valves are opened again.
Instructions for changing the shaft seals
- Always work with the greatest possible cleanliness.
- Only ever replace complete shaft seals, never individual components.
- Do not use used parts.
- Check the friction and sealing surfaces tor cleanliness or signs of damage before installing.
- Coat the sealing elements – seal ring, shaft seal cover, 0-ring and compressor shaft with a thin film of oil (use compressor oil).
- When installing the shaft seal, the pressure spring must be heard to lock in the pulling groove (bore) of the crankshaft.
- Align the shaft seal cover centrally to the compressor shaft, tighten the fastening screws evenly.
- After installation, turn the compressor shaft a few times round by hand, then check tor refrigerant leaks. Then mount motor, flywheel or coupling.
Special instructions for AM-Compressor
- Use the Bock extractor tool to remove the rotor.
- When installing and removing the shaft seal, it is recommended to remove the drive motor stator as weIl, to obtain more, clearer room for work and in order to remove the drained oil.
- When removing the shaft seal, ensure that the inside of the motor casing is not contaminated by draining oil. lt is therefore recommended to place a cloth or small receptacle in the motor casing before removing the shaft seal.
- Before reinstalling the motor, the motor casing and all other dismantled components are to be cleaned and freed from oil. The felt inlay should also be replaced.
- The compressors AM4 and AM5 are provided with two of such felt inserts supposed fo be fitted into the gap of the motor casing, i.e. the one with one hole to be fltted into AM4 and the one with two holes into AM5.
Special note for compressors FK30, FK40, FK50
The compressors are equipped with an integrated leaking oil trap device (for
compressor FK4O from 09.96). lf it is necessary to change the shaft seal, then
the felt insert of the trap device must also be changed.
Running in the shaft seals
Every shaft seal requires a certain running-in period in which there is a
greater oil leakage (approx. 200 – 300 h). After this period, as a rule a
light film of oil will form on the shaft seal cover, which can cause a few
drops of oil to form and drop off now and then: this can occur particularly
after frequent cycle operation. In the case of AM compressors it is also
possible for oil residues from the motor and motor casing which are still
present inspite of careful cleaning, to run out and cause in the impression of
an oil leak. The shaft seal cover of fhe compressor types F6, F14, F16 are
equipped with a hose providing discharge of probable leakage oil into a
collecting container. In order to avoid that the hose doesn’t brush against
the flywheel, the hose has to be fixed at the bearing flange by means of the
hose band clip supplied with. The hose Iength may be shortened according to
requirements.
