Read Before Installation
Important Read Before Installation
Warning
- The GL-2 taillight is a smart combination lamp that is polarity-sensitive both as a single unit and when connected as a pair (left and right).
- Incorrect polarity can result in irreversible damage to the lamp, and such damage won’t be covered by the warranty.
- If there’s uncertainty or any signs of tampering in the vehicle wiring, verify the polarity using a multimeter or opt for professional installation. Each vehicle may have unique characteristics. Under no circumstances should you attempt to tamper with the GL-2 wiring.
Installation And Removal of existing lamps
Preparation for installation and removal of existing lamps
- Ensure the vehicle ignition is switched off, with the lights switch turned to the off position. Carefully unplug and remove the old taillights, remembering which side has the Fog light and Reverse light located.
- Inside the rear cabin, remove the horizontal lower interior taillight trim from both sides and slightly lift the carpet to expose the wiring (black) rubber grommet, allowing access for wiring to the bottom taillight area.
- Check to see the correct fuse is inserted for the left and right side taillights.
Note: Given that many Defenders now feature aftermarket LED lights, it’s probable that the relay has been adjusted to accommodate resistance variations. Consequently, a relay is not included in this set. This aligns with our commitment to environmental considerations and minimizes consumer costs.
Pre 1994 Defenders may have different taillight plugs on the vehicle side.

Installation Instructions
Installation instructions for the GL-2 (2 setup options available)
The GL-2.1 taillight is a sided taillight indicated by an “L” for left “R” for right and top facing installation indicated by 2 arrows on the housing. It is important to install the lamps on the correct side and facing up.
Warning polarity must be in order before installation on the front and rear of the vehicle.
Modern taillight configuration setup
- Identify the small GL-2.2 turn signal taillight with the yellow and black wire, along with a single yellow wire. Install at the top taillight location of the vehicle. On the interior side, feed the wiring down through the rubber grommet area. Connect the plug to the turn signal plug, the spare yellow wire will be used later connecting to the main GL-2.1 lamp.
Install the main large GL-2.1 taillight
- Do you have the correct side taillight and facing the correct way up?
- Identify the small single yellow wire on the lamp and proceed to connect to the single remaining turn signal yellow wire on the small lamp.
- Locate the 3-pin plug featuring 3 wires, red, green, and black. Feed the wire upward into the cabin through the rubber grommet. Connect it directly to the brake/position light plug. Note certain vehicles may have an alternative arrangement of the brake/position light wire. Confirm that the brake light wire corresponds to the red wire from the lamp, and align the position light wire with the green wire.
- Identify the side on the vehicle for the fog light and reverse. Connect the appropriate plug marked “R” for Reverse or “F” for Fog. One plug will remain free to safely protect from water/dirt. Use the spare wire-free plug protector in the box to isolate the plug.
- For the optional dual fog/reverse light feature, remove the black sleeved long white and brown wire from the box. Guide the cable from under the vehicle to the taillight area and connect to the brown and white wires coming from the lamp. Safely secure the remaining wire under the vehicle to the opposite side to be connected later.
- Locate the green and red short wire on the lamp and direct it to the remaining free taillight hole.
- Securely fasten the lamp to the body
- ( Tip: you can apply grease to the threads to protect from road surface residue).
- Install the remaining small lamp GL-2.2 with the red and green cable and connect to the red and green cable on the large GL-2. 1 Lamp.
- Repeat the process for the opposite side taillight installation.
Classic taillight configuration
Classic taillight configuration you can swap the turn signal and brake/position light location using the red/green extension wire from the box adding to the brake/position light.
