FAQ:
Q: Can I play more than one mother-hen card per round?
A: No, only one mother-hen card can be played per round.
by Robert Brouwer
From the smallest chicks to the biggest roosters, every chicken loves worms. So it isn‘t surprising that even the youngest pullets jostle for the biggest portion at Rooster Ronny‘s new “all you can pick“ worm buffet. Usually, the worst rooster rowdies manage to get to the front of the line, but even the newly hatched chicks know that they can still get a lot if they are late – and how to get their mother hen to serve up an extra portion.
Object of the Game
Be the player with the most worms in your hand by the end of the game.
Game Materials
Set-up
Each player chooses one color and gets the respective set of pullets as hand
cards. The unused pullets are put back into the box. Shuffle the worm cards
and the mother-hen cards and form a face-down draw pile.
Before the game begins, put the top 9 cards (in the four-player game) or the
top 18 cards (in the game with two or three players) of the draw pile back
into the box.
The player who last was at a chicken farm gets the tractor card and places it
face up in front of him.
Course of the Game
- The game proceeds over 9 rounds.
- At the beginning of each round, reveal as many cards from the draw pile as there are players and lay them out in one row. Place the first card directly next to the draw pile on position 1.
- Then each player chooses one hand card and puts it face down in front of him.
- Once all players have done this, they reveal their cards simultaneously.
- The player who has laid out the highest value takes the card from position 1 into his hand. The player with the next higher value takes the card from position 2, and so on, until everybody has taken one card from the display. If two or more players have laid out cards with the same value, the card closest to the tractor card (in a clockwise direction) is considered the higher one. Then each player puts the card he has just played on his personal discard pile.
After that, the next player (clockwise) gets the tractor card, and the next round begins. From now on, you can also play worm cards from your hand.
Mother-hen cards
At the end of each round, before the new row of cards is revealed, you can
play a mother-hen card and put it back into the box. In return, you take 2
cards (worms or pullets) of your choice from your discard pile back into your
hand. After that, you have one additional hand card for the rest of the game.
You may not use more than one mother-hen card per round. You may never play a
mother-hen card in order to get a worm card from the display.
End of the Game
At the end of the ninth round, the draw pile is depleted and the game is over.
Now players have one last opportunity to play a mother-hen card, before they
find out who will win the game. To this end, add up the values of the worm
cards in your hand. Pullets, mother hens and cards in the discard pile are not
included in the count. The player who has been able to collect the most worms
wins. In case of a tie, the player involved who has the fewest hand cards
wins. If there is still a tie, players share the victory – or play another
game right away.
The Two-Player Game
In the two-player game, you observe all the rules as described above, with the following changes:
- Form a pile of the unused pullet cards and shuffle it well. This is your Robo-chicken.
- Every round, you reveal 3 cards from the draw pile and lay them out in a row.
- After both players have chosen a hand card, they reveal these cards, plus the top card from the Robo-chicken pile.
- Distribute worm cards and mother-hen cards as described above. The card that the Robo-chicken gains is removed from the game.
- Every third round, the Robo-chicken gets the tractor card.
As usual, the game is over after nine rounds, and the player with the most worms in his hand is the winner.
