Connect Smart Home Device to Bluetooth

Try these steps to connect and resolve issues for Alexa-compatible Bluetooth devices like smartphones, smart bulbs, and smart plugs.

Tip: For third-party devices, link your Alexa account with your account in the manufacturer’s app for your smart home device. Make sure that you enter the correct third-party username and password in the manufacturer’s app

To set up Bluetooth smart home devices with Alexa, just power on your smart home device. Then say, “Discover devices.” If you experience issues during set up, or if your Bluetooth device stops working, try these troubleshooting steps.

1. Update your smart home device firmware. Check the manufacturer’s website or companion app for instructions to download firmware updates.

2. Check your device supports Bluetooth and Alexa. Make sure that your smart home device supports Bluetooth by checking the packaging and the device for a Bluetooth logo
   . Make sure that your smart home device is compatible with Alexa by checking the manufacturer’s instructions or companion app.

3. Make sure your smart home device is near your Echo. During setup, make sure that your smart home device is within 30 ft (9 m) of your Echo device.

4. Make sure your Echo device software is up to date. Your Echo device software updates automatically. You can also manually check for updates by restarting your device, or by saying, “Check for updates.” If you’re using an Echo device with a screen, swipe down from the top of the display and select Settings. Then go to Device Options > Check for software updates.

5. Check the instructions for your device. For detailed steps specific to your device, open the Alexa app and open Devices
   . Select
   and then select Add Device. Select your brand or your device type, then follow the instructions in the app.

6. If you are still having trouble connecting Bluetooth, try resetting your device.

Note: If your device is connected through a skill, disable and then re- enable the skill. If these troubleshooting steps don’t work, try resetting your Alexa device and smart home devices.
