Learn more about the end of Hangouts support for Fi

Hangouts no longer works for SMS/MMS text messages, voice calls, or voicemail with Google Fi.

What’s changed

Hangouts no longer works with Google Fi to:

Send or receive text messages
Make or receive voice calls and voicemail

If you used Hangouts for your text messages

You can transfer your Hangouts text messages to Messages by Google to text, make calls, and check voicemail online with Messages for web. Even when your phone is off, these features work. Learn more about Messages for web with Fi.
If you choose not to use Messages:
- You can still retrieve your old texts that you got on Hangouts.
- Your phone’s default SMS app automatically gets new text messages.
Messages is only available for Android.

If you used Hangouts for voice calls and voicemail

Your phone’s default phone app automatically gets new voice calls and voicemail.
You can choose to use Messages by Google if you transfer your Hangouts text messages to Messages. Your voicemail and call records automatically sync between:
- Messages mobile app
- Messages for web
You can make voice calls on Messages for web. Learn more about Messages for web with Fi.
Messages is only available for Android.

Transfer your Hangouts text messages to Messages by Google

Step 1: Make Messages your default SMS app

Important: Some of these steps only work on Android 6.0 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.

To download the Messages app:

On your phone, open the Play Store .
Search for Messages by Google.
Tap Install.

To make Messages your default SMS app:

Open the Messages app . Learn where to find your apps.
To change your default message app, follow the on-screen instructions.
- If you’re not prompted to make Messages your default app, you can do so from your phone’s Settings app. Learn how to set or clear default apps.

Step 2: Transfer or sync your text messages

When you transfer your Hangouts text messages to Messages by Google, you won’t lose any of your conversations. Learn how to transfer or sync your Hangouts text messages.

When you use Messages, you can make calls, send texts, and check voicemail on the web. After setup, you can use these features on the web, even if your phone is off.

Important: You can transfer your SMS/MMS data from Hangouts to Messages until September 30, 2021. Transferring your SMS/MMS data doesn’t delete your data from Hangouts. You can still retrieve your data with Google Takeout until September 30, 2021. Learn how to download your data.
