Prepare for Installation

Homeowner checklist prior to installation
Before you cut any pipe, be sure the homeowner has completed these steps in the Homeowner Quick Start Guide:

  1. Put the battery in the Controller and plug it into a standard wall outlet for 2-3 minutes. (See the Quick Start Guide for further instructions on battery charging options.)
  2. Download the Buoy Whole Home Water Controller app from Google Play or the App Store.
  3. Unplug the Controller from the charger.
  4. Test the shutoff valve by pushing the red button and holding it for two seconds, then releasing. You will hear the shutoff valve close. Press the red button again to open the valve, and leave it open for the installation.
  5. Follow the in-app instructions to connect the Controller to your home’s WiFi network.
  6. Bring the Controller to the location in which the plumber will install the Buoy Controller to ensure that your WiFi network reaches the Controller. If there’s a problem with the WiFi, the LED on the Controller will start blinking red.
  7. When your Controller is connected to your home WiFi network, your plumber can begin installation.

Caution
The Buoy Controller must never be installed:

  • On a home without an existing main water shutoff
  • On fire sprinkler water lines or fire suppression systems
  • In a place that might be submerged in water
  • In a place that might be buried in snow
  • Behind a wall or other inaccessible place
  • On pipe more than 2-in. diameter

In any configuration, be sure the blue end of the Controller faces the water INLET and the grey end of the Controller faces the water OUTLET.image

Installation Checklist

While the homeowner is working on the above steps, you can prepare for installation.
If there are any issues during the installation process, please contact 1-800-633-3991 to speak with customer support.

  • Go to the suggested install location for the Buoy Controller and make sure the location is viable. The device can be installed horizontally or vertically.

  • Identify diameter (adaptors are required for anything other than 3/4 in.) and type (CPVC, copper, galvanized) of pipe, and verify that you have all necessary fittings.

  • Locate the home’s manual shutoff valve. The Buoy Controller must be installed after:

    • the utility water meter
    • the water main manual shutoff
    • the PRV, if one is present.
NOTE: If the PRV is more than three (3) years old, consider replacing the PRV to ensure that the Buoy Controller is protected.image

  • Remind the customer that you will be turning off the water during installation.

  • Take a “before” picture of the existing plumbing.

  • If installing indoors, and plugging the Controller in permanently, locate a nearby 110v power outlet. If there is no convenient outlet, or installing outdoors, the fully charged battery should power the Controller for about one year with normal use.
NOTE: The Controller cannot be installed with the battery door facing out toward a user in either vertical or horizontal configuration.image
3

  • Turn off water at the home’s main supply valve. Verify it is off by trying both hot and cold water in the house.

  • Check that the water heater doesn’t need to be isolated or drained to prevent drain-out.

  • Drain water from the entire house via any nearby hose bib.

  • STOP. Be sure that the homeowner has completed all steps of their checklist. The Buoy Controller should now be with you at the installation location and on the home’s WiFi network. If there are any problems, contact customer support before cutting the pipe.

  • Protect the Controller from scratches during setup by laying it on a soft surface or cardboard.

  • Determine which installation option is the right one for the location. See options on pages 4–5.

  • Measure and mark the pipe for cutting.

  • Cut the pipe at your mark using the appropriate tool.

  • Install the Controller.

Installation Options

In any configuration, be sure the blue end of the Controller faces the

water INLET and the grey end of the Controller faces the water OUTLET.
Option 1: Install In-Line (Horizontal or Vertical Offset)image
4

NOTE: In-line installation requires a minimum clearance of 13 in. for the Controller and an additional 5 in if additional adaptors are needed. Allow additional space for any other adaptors (not included).
For these installations use 1-in. unions (not included) or the included 1-in. female by 3/4-in. male adaptors. The 3/4-in. male adaptors require two (one for each end) 3/4-in. female adaptors. If installing on Pex, CPVC or other tubing, please see Installation Option 3 (Flexible Line).
Fittings: Two 3/4-in. female fittings, Copper, ProPress or SharkBite

  1. Install the optional couplings (included) using the thickest possible rubber washers (included).
    • Use a smooth-jawed wrench for tightening.
    • Do not use force or overtighten.
    • Use teflon tape only if needed. Liquid thread sealer is not recommended.image 5
  2. Use the two rounded rubber gaskets (included) between the Controller or coupling and the copper adaptor compression nuts (not included).
  3. Put the Controller in place and tighten the compression nuts between the Controller and the water lines. Make sure the Buoy logo is facing outward and the LED is visible.
  4. Make sure the Controller is securely braced.
Horizontal Offset

Horizontal offset from a vertical inlet. Example shown is larger than necessary but makes use of the two 1-in. female by 3/4-in. male adaptors. Requires proper pipe support on the wall. Use of a 3/4-in. street elbow can reduce the number of 90° elbows needed.
Fittings: Six (6) 90° elbows, two (2) 3/4-in. to 3/4-in. adaptorsimage

  1. Make sure the Buoy logo is facing outward and the LED is visible.
  2. Make sure the Controller is securely braced.
Vertical Offset

Vertical offset from a vertical inlet. Example shown is larger than necessary but makes use of the two 3/4-in. to 1-in. ProPress fittings. Requires proper pipe support on the wall. Use of a female threaded 3/4 in. street elbow can reduce the number of 90° elbows needed.
Fittings: Six (6) 90° elbows, two (2) 3/4-in. ProPress to 3/4-in. adaptors

  1. Unit should be mounted with the water flow arrow pointing up (light blue side facing the ground)
  2. Make sure the Buoy logo is facing outward and the LED is visible.
  3. Make sure the Controller is securely braced.
Option 2: Install with Optional Waterhorn Accessory (Not Included)

Minimizes cut space with separate purchase of waterhorn accessory. Requires minimum clearance of approximately 4 in. to attach the waterhorn to the pipe.
Fittings: Copper female adaptorsimage 8

  1. Install copper female adaptor (not included) on each pipe.

  2. Place one white gasket inside each of the union fittings at the top and bottom of the waterhorn.

  3. Assemble the waterhorn union fittings, copper FPT female adaptors, and the waterhorn. Use a smooth-jawed wrench to tighten all fittings.
Use teflon tape only if needed. Liquid thread sealer is not recommended.

  4. Place the Controller in the waterhorn with a black gasket on each side, then tighten the swivel adaptors (do not use force or overtighten).

  5. Make sure the Buoy logo is facing outward and the LED is visible.

  6. Make sure the Controller is securely braced.image 9

Option 3: Install with Flexible Line (Not Included)

A flexible line installation requires at least a 20 in. x 20 in. wall space for the Controller, couplings, flex line, and strapping to secure the Controller to the wall, and a minimum of 6 in. depth.
Fittings: Appropriate adaptors for type of pipe

  1. Attach the 3/4-in. couplings with rubber gaskets (included) to each end of the Controller.
  2. Attach flexible lines to each coupling.
  3. Use professional judgement to secure the Controller to the wall with strapping.
  4. Make sure the Buoy logo is facing outward and the LED is visible.image 10

Other fittings:
3/4-in. male NPT to 1-in. female NPS union fittings – Included with Controller
3/4-in. female sweat to 3/4-in. FPT/FIPS fitting – Can reduce the number of fittings and space needed

Post-Installation

After you have installed the Buoy Controller, complete this checklist and answer any additional homeowner questions. NOTE: Be sure the blue end of the Controller faces the water INLET and the gray end of the Controller faces the water OUTLET.

  • Verify the Controller’s fit and check that the device is level and secure.
  • Use the LED indicator to verify that the Controller is still connected to the home’s WiFi network. A red light indicates that the network connection was lost.
  • Turn on the water at the main.
  • Verify that there are no leaks and that the house pressure is between 50 psi and 80 psi.
  • Turn on the water heater input.
  • Cycle the Controller valve by pressing the red button for two seconds and releasing it. Repeat to open the valve.
  • To test: Ask the homeowner to run cold water through the system, then verify in the app that the water flow was captured. (This could take a minute for first water flow.) Repeat for hot water.
  • Take an “after” picture of the installed Controller and new plumbing.
  • Offer to bleed the air from the customer’s system. If the customer declines, explain what they should expect while the air vents from the system.
  • Remind the homeowner that, during the first two weeks while the Controller is learning the home’s water signature, they will not receive leak alerts and the Controller will not automatically shut off the water.
