BRIGGS STRATTON Rocker Cover Gasket Installation Guide
CONDITION:
Briggs & Stratton recently identified possible oil leakage from the rocker cover on small vertical shaft engines. The leakage is caused by a distorted or an incorrectly installed rocker cover and gasket. Refer to table below for engine models in scope of this condition.
CORRECTIVE ACTION:
If oil leakage is present during servicing, then do the repair instructions as specified by the instructions that follow.

Remove the rocker cover and gasket from the engine plate as shown in Figure 1.

Use a degreaser or contact cleaner to remove oil and debris from the head plate, rocker cover, and area surfaces.

Put the new rocker cover and gasket onto the head plate as shown in Figure 3. Refer to the table in the Condition Statement for the correct rocker cover and gasket part number.

Use the original hardware to install the clean rocker cover and gasket as shown in Figure 4. In a 2-step clockwise direction, tighten the 3 bolts to 20 lb-in (2.3 Nm). Tighten the bolts again to 40 lb-in (4.5 Nm).

Check the oil level. Add oil if necessary. Start and operate the application to make sure that the condition is resolved.
