CELESTRON 71354 Starter Kit Outland X 8X32 Binocular Instruction Manual
Welcome to birding! We’re delighted you’ve chosen Celestron binoculars to begin your observing activities. We hope you’ll find watching birds – as well as observing the other wonders of nature – to be as entertaining, relaxing, and rejuvenating as we long have.
SET THE TWIST UP RUBBER EYE CUPS
Twist the Rubber Eye cups up if you do not wear eyeglasses and twist them down if you do wear eyeglasses to obtain the maximum field of view.
HINT: Eyeglasses worn for nearsightedness should be worn when using binoculars, as you may not be able to reach a sharp focus at infinity without them.
ADJUSTING THE INTERPUPILLARY DISTANCE (IPD)
Since the distance between the eyes (specifically, the distance between the centers of the pupils) varies among individuals, the two eyepieces of the binoculars must be correctly aligned (adjusted). This is called adjusting the interpupillary distance. To adjust this distance, lift the binoculars up to your eyes (using both hands) and look through them at an object in the distance. Move the two halves of the binoculars about the hinge until you see one clear circle of image through both eyes.
SETTING THE DIOPTER COMPENSATION
This binocular has a diopter compensation adjustment setting marked with +/- below the right eyepiece. This is the diopter compensation adjustment dial (often simply called the “diopter”) for the binocular and is used to adjust for any differences between your eyes.
Whenever you first begin using a new binocular, of if you resume using a binocular after someone else has been using it, the diopter compensation adjustment dial should be re-set to ensure that you are receiving the optimal level of optical performance from the binocular for you own visual acuity. Once set, it will not need to be set again unless it is changed by another user, or if the diopter compensation adjustment dial has been unintentionally turned out of its set position.
To set the diopter compensation adjustment for a binocular:
- Set the dial at the zero point by placing the index mark on the focusing eyepiece opposite the zero or middle on the scale.
- Use one of the binocular’s objective lens covers to cover the right objective lens.
- Select a distant stationary object such as a tree or sign as your focusing target. Keeping both eyes open, raise the binocular to your eyes and center the selected focusing target into the binocular’s field of view.
- Still keeping both eyes open while viewing the target, use the center focus dial to bring the target into sharp focus in the left eyepiece. Once this is done, do not adjust the center focus dial again until the end of this process.
- Lower the binocular and move the objective lens cover to cover the left objective lens.
- Still keeping both eyes open, relocate and view the focusing target. This time, use the diopter compensation adjustment dial to bring the target into sharp focus in the right eyepiece.
- Lower the binocular and uncover the left eyepiece. You should now be able to view through both eyepieces and adjust focus using the center focus dial with the proper amount of compensation maintained between your two eyes.
If the diopter compensation adjustment dial ever becomes moved – either intentionally or unintentionally – simply repeat this process to re-set it.
Now you are ready to use your binoculars — enjoy the view!
TRIPOD ADAPTABILITY
This binocular features tripod adapter threads underneath a protective cap. To attach a binocular tripod adapter, remove the cap and then thread the bolt from the binocular tripod adapter into the threaded port. The other end of the binocular tripod adapter attaches to a photographic tripod. Mounting binoculars this way allows for added stability and comfort.
CARE AND CLEANING
Binoculars do not need routine maintenance other than making sure that the objective lenses and eyepieces are kept clean. If repairs become necessary, they should be serviced by the manufacturer or a qualified binocular repair company. Collimation (optical alignment) is the biggest concern with binoculars. If your binoculars are roughly handled or dropped, there is a good chance that the collimation will be out, and they should be serviced. Dirty objectives and/or eyepieces mean less light transmission and loss of brightness as well as unsharp images. Keep your optics clean! When not using your binoculars, store them in the case provided. Avoid touching the glass surfaces, however, if fingerprints (which contain mild acid) do get on the glass, they should be cleaned as soon as possible to avoid damaging the coatings. To clean the optical surfaces, we recommend a lens/optics cleaning kit available at most photo or optical shops. Follow the instructions provided with the kit closely for best results. If you have a lot of dust or dirt accumulated, brush it off gently with a natural hair brush and/or utilize a can of pressurized air before using the cleaning kit. Alternately, you could use a Celestron Lens Cleaning Kit (#93576) made especially for cleaning binoculars. Never attempt to clean your binoculars internally or try to take them apart!
WARNING:
Never look at the sun while using your binocular. Looking at the sun can cause
permanent eye damage.
