User Guide
This Nord Grand service guide shortly explains the most common issues to authorized Nord Service Centres taking care of the Nord range. The information found in this document is not intended for end-users or dealers. It may not be copied, modified, or distributed in any way.

Opening the Nord Grand
The NG is opened by loosening four out of five screws on each wooden side
panel. Keeping the screw mounted in each rear down-left/right corner makes it
easier to tilt the upper lid when opening up the machine.
After this, loosen the ten screws on the rear side as well as the six screws
under the lower lid.
! Mind the ribbon cable between the panelboard in the upper lid and the mainboard in the lower lid, when opening the upper lid.
The Keybed
The keybed used in the Nord Grand is from the Japanese manufacturer Kawai, featuring a Responsive Hammer Action and triple sensor technology.
Each individual keybed is calibrated on the single key level in the Clavia factory and the IC holding this information is attached under the keybed. For the Nord Grand, the calibration IC is integrated into the same PCB as the keyboard adapter function between the Kawai interface and the Nord keyboard standard connector.
Replacing the keybed
Compared to the Fatar TP40 keybed, the Kawai keybed is mounted with screws under the lower lid only, no screws on “the inside” of the Nord Grand.
Mind that the cabling (20 + 6pins ribbon cables) coming from the interface board are “stretched out”, not causing the hammers to “reach” the cables inside the keybed.
Mk2 keybed
Units with ser# PE14132-14159 and from PE14204 and onward, are using the Mk2
version of the Kawai keybed.
There is no difference in the performance or features for the end-user. The
visual difference is that the rubber strips are blue in the Mk2 version,
instead of grey, used in Mk1.
When a newly calibrated keybed is replaced, make sure to upgrade to the
latest OS version in the Nord Grand as well. If not, an error message will
show up in the display while booting up the unit.
The Mk2 keybed is supported from OS v1.54.
The Mainboard
The NG mainboard is based around the same ARM/SharcDSP platform as in the NP4 but is now equipped with eight 2Gb flashes for the piano section (four on the NP4) and two flashes for the sample library (same as NP4).
Boot up problems
For incoming service cases claiming any kind of “boot up problem”, “error
codes at startup” or various problems on the panel board, it is always worth
trying to go into TEST MODE and perform individual tests on the main and
panelboard, depending on each individual case. See next page for details.
! Always try this first!
Even if the NG is reported to have boot-up problems, try to boot up in test mode and then erase all data stored on the flashes, followed by a complete install of the latest OS version and samples.
Applications and updates can be found on:
After erasing the flashes, always install the OS first, followed by restoring the Nord Grand Factory Backup file using the latest Nord Sound Manager version. These files can be downloaded from the website above.
If the problem persists, or if the NG can’t reach the test mode at all, please contact Clavia for further assistance at service@clavia.se
Test mode
Like all Nord products, the NG holds an internal test program that is used in the production line and as a guide for troubleshooting at service centers.
Test mode
Holding down LIVE MODE at bootup will display the hardware revision and
the boot prom version.
Trouble Shooting Guide
The test mode contains four different sections covering mainboard tests (MNB), panel board tests (PNL), keyboard calibration (KBD), and system tests (SYS).
The MNB: 1 (see next page) is a test sequence that runs through various
quick tests of the flashes and DSPs.
This test point is a good start to verify the overall status of the mainboard
on units with failure claims around the flashes, sample errors, boot issues,
etc. If this test sequence runs ok on a board with a reported sample error it
may be worth running the long/total flash tests as well, and/or going into the
SYS section for erasing/trash tests to verify the reported failure claim.
All “Flash Total” tests are destructive as long as the test session is
interrupted before being completed.
The whole memory area is verified through various read, erase & write
commands. If this is interrupted, or canceled due to a reported flash error,
the unit needs to be reprogrammed via an OS update followed by a factory
restore using the Nord Sound Manager.
To run destructive flash tests (erase, trash) in the SYS section requires a confirm command, displayed by blinking LEDs next to the corresponding push buttons.
The audio test on MNB: 18 is handy to perform troubleshooting on the analog audio section.
Pressing “run” will generate a (loud!) 0dBFS, 1 kHz sine wave from the D/A converter through the entire analog audio section all the way to the output jacks.
