unit overview

Congrats on taking the first step to a simpler science unit! We know science can be daunting and resources can be nonexistent. Maybe you’re new to this grade or this topic, or your new school doesn’t have the materials your last school did. Maybe you’ve been teaching this topic for forever and are looking for some new inspiration. Either way, there is something for you in this unit! We know ink isn’t cheap so where it makes sense, resources are available in both color and black and white. Consider printing or copying some resources on cardstock and laminating for durability. The black-and-white versions will look awesome printed on bright paper for a pop of color! In a Flash units are designed to be a quick, flexible solution. Use what makes sense for you—choose pieces and parts to fit into your existing unit, or use all of the included resources as a complete unit. Take a peek through what’s included, and you’ll be off and running in no time!Carson-Dellosa-

What’s included?

Labs
These hands-on activities may be used in a whole-group or small-group setting, or as centers students can rotate through. They fully support the included lessons and come with recording sheets to guide students and provide formative assessments. Use one, use a few, use them all! Each lab comes with a teacher-facing section with objectives, materials, and prep that will need to be done beforehand. The remaining section is student-facing and designed to be placed in the lab to guide students through the steps if you intend to use the labs as independent activities.

Lapbo ok Interactive Notebo ok Pages
This resource includes a variety of interactive elements to complete a unit lapbook or to use individually on interactive notebook pages. You will find elements to match each included lesson. Pick and choose to fit your class’s needs.

Journal & Recording Sheets
This file includes all of the recording sheets needed for the lessons and labs. The first set of pages are designed to be copied front and back, folded in half, and stapled to create student journals for the entire unit. If you are not using all of the lessons and labs, you can use the second set of recording sheets. Simply copy the sheets for the activities you plan to do, cut them in half (if needed) and staple in the corner or along the edge to create a personalized journal.

Lessons
Look here for complete lesson plans to introduce and teach the concepts within the unit. You will find related standards, learning objectives, step- by-step directions for engaging, hands-on activities, and reflect-and-assess suggestions to wrap up each lesson.

Creativity
Inject a dose of fun (and learning!) into the unit with a craftivity. Each unit includes one Creativity that allows students to get creative and make a tangible product that directly relates to the unit content.

STEM Challenge
The STEM challenge activity is intentionally designed to use six or fewer common household items so gathering materials isn’t a headache. They also include a hint, extension activities, and a short explanation of the science involved in the activity. You may choose to have students complete the activity as is and leave it at that. Or, it can be a more involved activity by using the included sheets to help guide students through the entire design process, followed by reflection and extension. A rubric is also included to help you assess students’ work.

Vocabulary Posters
Each vocabulary word is available in a variety of sizes to fit your needs. Print the full-size versions to fill a bulletin board or print them as small as a quarter of a page for students to use for matching games or in interactive notebooks. Flexibility is the name of the game!

Practice Activities
This resource is like a grab bag of games and activities to help students review what they’ve learned in the unit. You may find matching games, board games, card games, and more! The games can be played in centers, as morning work activities, or as send-home games to get families involved and help students reinforce unit concepts.

E-BOOKS
Included are a few e-books on topics directly related to the unit. They often include several reading levels for differentiation. You may use these to introduce lessons or to tie the unit into your literacy block. Display them on an interactive whiteboard and read them together as a class, or place copies on tablets or student laptops to be read and interacted with in small groups.

tips & troubleshooting

The resources included in this unit are all in a PDF format. You can use programs like Adobe Acrobat to open the files. There are also many free options available online if you search for “PDF reader.”

Q & A

How do I access the files on the flash drive?
Insert the USB into the USB port on your computer or laptop. If your computer does not have a USB port, you will need to use an adapter. Or, contact customer service at carsondellosa.com to see about getting the files as a digital download instead. Once the USB is inserted,

If you are running Windows on a PC:

  1. If your computer displays a notification with options to choose from when the flash drive is inserted, choose the option labeled “Open folder to view files.”
  2. If it doesn’t display a notification, click on the yellow folder icon labeled File Explorer in your taskbar or Start menu. On the left side of the window that opens, select the thumb drive.
  3. Open the files by double-clicking on them. If you want, you can copy them to somewhere on your computer (like your desktop or a folder you create) so you don’t have to insert and open the flash drive every time you want to access the resources.

If you are running macOS on an Apple device:

  1. The flash drive will show up as a drive on your desktop. Double click the drive to open the drive in a Finder window. Or, open a Finder window and select the flash drive on the left side.
  2. Open the files by double-clicking on them. If you want, you can copy them to somewhere on your computer (like your desktop or a folder you create) so you don’t have to insert and open the flash drive every time you want to access the resources.
  3. Before removing the flash drive, right click on the drive on your desktop. Select “Eject [name of drive].” Then, you may remove the flash drive safely.

Help! I’m having trouble opening the files.
Make sure you have a PDF reader installed on your computer before opening. Adobe Acrobat is a common program, though there are also many good free options available online. Simply search for “PDF reader” in your favorite search engine.

Can I open the files on a smartphone or tablet?
Yes, although the files are not designed to be used on smartphones. First, you will need to access the files on the flash drive (or the downloaded digital files). See the question on the previous page for more information on this step. Once the files are on a computer, you can move them to a phone or tablet. The steps will vary depending on the hardware and operating system of each device you are moving files from and to. Please contact your district’s or school’s IT department first, as they will be most familiar with your current setup. Often it is easiest to use some sort of cloud storage to facilitate the transfer, such as iCloud, Google Drive, or Dropbox. First, you will need to upload the files from your computer to the cloud storage. Then, you can access the cloud storage on the device (generally through an app or the browser) and download the desired files to the device. For transferring files from a PC or Mac to an iPad, see this website for more detailed instructions.

Can I share the files with my team or school?
In purchasing this product, you have one digital license. Your team should buy their own copies at carsondellosa.com. If you’d like to purchase a site or multi-user license, please contact Customer Service at carsondellosa.com.

Can I customize the text on a resource?
Right now that option is not available with the In a Flash resources. If you would like to have this option, please let us know by contacting Customer Service at carsondellosa.com.
