This manual must be read and understood by the user before using the component. Third-party users must also be informed about the following provisions. Keep this user manual safe in case you need to refer to it later.

1.1 Safety

DANGER
Incorrect handling, installation, maintenance or servicing can lead to accidents causing severe injuries or death!

  • Compliance with the following provisions is a prerequisite for accident-free use and faultless functioning.
  • Assembly and maintenance of the wheels requires a basic knowledge of handling bicycle components. If in any doubt, consult your retailer.
  • The wheels should be used only in accordance with their intended purpose. Otherwise the user shall assume full responsibility.
  • The maximum system weight of the wheels must not be exceeded.
  • The maximum tyre pressure of the wheel of 120 psi / 8,2 bar and of the tyre used must not be exceeded.
  • The wheels must be compatible with all parts of the bicycle.
  • Only use original Swiss Side / DT Swiss spare parts.
  • The wheels must not be changed or modified.
  • The wheels must not be used if they are damaged or there are any signs of damage. If in any doubt, consult your retailer.

DANGER
Risk of death caused by incorrectly assembled or faulty wheels!

  • Check that the wheel is attached correctly before each ride.
  • Check the wheel for damage before and after each ride.
  • Regularly check the spoke tension, rotation, and wear of the wheel.

DANGER
Danger of burns from hot brake disc or brake flank!

  • Allow brake discs and brake flank to cool down before working on the wheel.

DANGER
Risk of death caused by failure or reduction of the brake performance when using wheels for rim brakes!

  • When using wheels for rims brakes, only “Swiss Stop Black Prince” brake pads must be used. Otherwise the user shall assume full responsibility.
  • If brake pads have previously been used with aluminum rims, these must not be used with carbon rims.
  • Brake using both brakes!
  • When riding downhill brake briefly and strongly, with pauses in between.
  • Avoid dragging continuously on the brakes, as the wheel will overheat, thus causing failure of the rim, tyre or inner tube.
  • The braking power of carbon rims is generally lower than that of aluminum rims.
  • If using new wheels or brake pads, the braking power is also reduced in wet conditions. Adjust the manner of cycling accordingly.

NOTICE
Risk of damaging the wheel by selecting incorrect components or tools!

  • Do not use metal tyre levers. These can damage the surface of the rim, tyre, or inner tube.
  • Use only valves with a suitable diameter and of an adequate length. The valve hole must not be modified.
  • Use only rim tapes, inner tubes and tyres which fit the dimensions of the rim.
  • Carbon rims must not be used with latex tubes.
1.2 Intended use and maximum system weight

The wheels must only be used on paved roads and within the intended use of road bikes. Otherwise the user shall assume full responsibility. The maximum system weight (rider, bike, equipment, luggage) is:

  • Wheels for rim brakes: 110 kg
  • Wheels for disc brakes: 110 kg

2 TUBELESS ASSEMBLY

ASSEMBLY

2.2 Fitting the tyre without a tube
  1. Put sealant fluid into the tyre. Comply with the instructions of the sealant manufacturer.

  2. Assemble the tyre according to the manufacturer’s specifications. We recommend using soapy water or installation fluid.

  3. Pump the tyre up to the maximum permitted pressure.
The lower of the pressures specified for the rim (120 psi / 8,2 bar) or tyre applies.

  4. Check the tyre seat.
The tyre must contact the rim evenly around its entire circumference. Have the tyre seat checked by a professional if in any doubt.

  5. If necessary, reduce the tyre pressure to the desired operating pressure.

2.3 Fitting tyres with a tube
  1. Install the rim tape. The pre-installed Swiss Side Tubeless Ready Tape can be used as rim tape.
  2. Assemble the inner tube and tyre according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
2.4 Assembling the cassette

Assemble the cassette according to the manufacturer’s specifications.

2.5 Assembling the brake disc
  1. If using a 6-hole brake disc on a Center Lock hub: Fit the DT Swiss Center Lock Adapter, and tighten to a torque of 40 Nm.
  2. If using a Center Lock brake disc: Assemble the brake disc according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
2.6 Fitting wheel with quick release

DANGER
Incorrect installation of the quick release can result in serious injuries or even death!

  • Before every ride, ensure that the wheel is securely mounted in the frame or fork. If in any doubt, consult your retailer.

quick release

→ Quick test: In its installed position, raise the wheel to be tested, and bang several times firmly onto the wheel. The wheel must not come free. This test does not guarantee that the quick release is correctly tightened. If in any doubt, consult your retailer.
→ Before every ride, ensure that the wheel is securely mounted in the frame or fork.

3 HANDLING

3.1 Braking correctly (ROAD Carbon)

Correct braking significantly affects the working life of wheels which have carbon brake surfaces. The following points should be noted:

  • Carbon wheels have a different braking behaviour to aluminum wheels. Especially when it is wet, a lower braking effect must be expected.
  • First ride on roads with little traffic in order to familiarise yourself with the changed conditions.
  • Never let the brakes rub. Brake only for a short time, but hard. The longer the pauses between spells of braking, the better.
  • If overheating occurs, the carbon laminate becomes soft, and the wheel distorts irreparably. This creates a significant risk of accidents.
  • New brake pads develop their full braking performance only after a few spells of braking. With new brake pads, expect reduced braking performance at first.
3.2 Transport

Correct transport avoids damage to the wheels. The following points should be noted:

  • Do not put carbon wheels under pressure.
  • Do not place objects on the wheels.
  • Transport wheels only in appropriate wheel bags.

Transport on a vehicle

NOTICE
Danger of damage to the wheel when transported on rear-mounted bicycle carriers from high exhaust gas temperatures! When transporting at the rear of a vehicle, a sufficient distance must be ensured between the exhaust and the wheel. DT Swiss recommends a minimum separation of 45 cm behind the exhaust and at least 20 cm above it.

  • Protect the rims appropriately before straps or ratchet systems are fitted. Transport in a vehicle
  • When transporting in a vehicle, cover the wheels in order to shield from direct sunlight.
  • If carbon wheels are transported in a vehicle and the outside temperature is high, release pressure from the tyres.
3.3 Storage (> 1 month)

Careful storage prolongs the life of the wheels. Note the following points:

  • Do not hang carbon wheels from hooks.
  • Release pressure from the tyres
  • Clean the wheels. In particular, completely remove salt residue.

4 MAINTENANCE AND CARE

4.1 Maintenance intervals

4.1.1 Check wear on wheels for rim brakes
  1. Remove any contamination (especially oil and traces of grease) from the brake surfaces.
  2. Check the degree of wear of the brake pads. Remove any embedded foreign bodies (grit, swarf, etc.).
  3. Check the degree of wear on the brake surfaces of the rims:
a)Aluminum rims: aluminum rims have wear indicators in the form of small, dot- shaped recesses. If these are no longer visible, the rim is worn and must be replaced.
b)Carbon rims: The cover layer must not be worn away. If there is visible wear, the rim must be replaced.
If in doubt, or if there is any visible wear, have them checked by a professional.
4.1.2 Disposal and environmental protection

The legal provisions concerning disposal apply. Essentially, waste of all kinds must be avoided or recycled. Any waste, carbon, cleaning products or liquids of any kind must be disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner.
