Diagnosis spot and direction of the probe of a 14 week minimum pregnant mare

Results of a pregnancy diagnostics test from mares between the 14th and 38th week after mating.

With growth of the fetus and increase of uterine fluid, the uterus considerably enlarges as pregnancy progresses. In the 3rd to 4th month
it will lower into the abdominal cavity. This is the best time for using the HK pregnancy detector. Diagnosis is possible from the 80th day, although this is affected by animal size, but is optimal from the 100th day. A clear audible continuous tone indicates a pregnant animal.

Operating-test

After activating the power switch on upper panel of the detector, apply some contact-oil on the face of the probe. Next, place the metal test probe against the probe face. If this produces a clear continuous tone and if the pregnancy control lamp lights up red continuously, the pregnancy tester is in working order and ready for use. Pay attention to the battery power control. If the red light is on, the battery must be changed very soon. The battery is completely empty if no light is on and must be changed immediately.

Contact-oil

The contact oil ensures airless contact between the animal’s skin and the face of the probe. Before each diagnosis, apply a liberal amount of oil on the face of the probe. Any clean oil or gel, with exception of mineral oil, is suitable for this purpose. Paraffin oil, for example, has good properties. Do not handle with any used oil.

Diagnosis-spot and scanning–direction of probe

Animals can be diagnosed from both sides. The optimal diagnosis spot is situated in the stiffle fold in front of and above the udder on the abdominal wall. The probe has to be directed to the animal‘s opposite side at an angle of approx. 45°. By moving the probe slightly forward and backward in an angle of approx. 30°, the ultrasonic waves scan the abdominal region, including the uterus where uterine fluid will reflect the ultrasonic waves. The Figure 1 demonstrates the placement of the probe.

Diagnosis

A clear audible continuous tone that lasts for 1-2 seconds indicates a pregnant animal. No signal, even after placing the probe more
than once and using a good quantity of oil, indicates a non-pregnant animal.

Diagnosis precision

Diagnosis precision is optimal from the 120th to the 250th day of pregnancy. However, the following aspects should be taken into consideration:

  • The animal to be tested should stand in a natural position.
  • If the probe is moved too much backwards, the ultrasonic waves can be reflected by the fluid of a full bladder or the hip-bones (pelvis) giving a false positive result.
  • Apply fresh oil on the face of the probe for each new placing.
  • In case of negative result, repeat testing at a later date. This gives additional certainty.
  • Gain some experience of testing by using mares which are known to be pregnant or not pregnant respectively.

SWITCH OFF POWER AFTER USE!

Changing battery

To change battery, open battery-compartment on the bottom of the tester. Therefore, push in the two lateral placed snap locks simultaneously with thumb and forefinger and take off the lid with the other hand. Use Alcaline batteries only (4 x 1,5 Volts Mignon). Other battery types diminish performance and should not be used.

Maintenance and care of detector

After each use, probe and instrument should be cleaned carefully. The probe can be cleaned with warm soaped water, the instrument with a dry clean cloth only. The tester should be kept in a clean dry place. Do not drop or mistreat device, as this risks to damage the electronics and the probe. Careful maintenance and cleanliness will enhance the durability and performance of this instrument!
