Safety Notes
1.1 Intended use
R600 VarioClean: The pipe cleaning machines are only to be used for
cleaning pipes with the following diameters: R600 VarioClean: 20 – 150 mm:
This device is only be used for the specified appropriate use. The device must
never be used in the rain and pressurized water must never be used on it. You
must ensure that water never gets into the battery
Charger and battery: The chargers are only suitable for charging
ROTHENBERGER and CAS (Cordless Alliance System) battery packs. This tool is
not designed for use by persons with physical, sensory or mental disabilities,
or with insufficient experience and/or knowledge, unless they are supervised
by a person responsible for their safety, or have received instructions on how
to use the tool by this person. Never attempt to charge batteries that are not
rechargeable. The danger of explosion! Battery packs marked with CAS are 100%
compatible with CAS devices (Cordless Alliance System). To select the
appropriate device, please contact your ROTHENBERGER dealer. Read the relevant
instructions for the devices used.
1.2 General Power Tool Safety Warnings
WARNING! Read all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations, and
specifications provided with this power tool.
Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock,
fire, and/or serious injury. Save all warnings and instructions for future
reference. The term “power tool” in the warnings refers to your electrically
operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.
1) Work area safety
a) Keep the work area clean and well lit. Cluttered and dark areas invite
accidents.
b) Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the
presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks that
may ignite dust or fumes.
c) Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool.
Distractions can cause you to lose control.
2) Electrical safety
a) Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way.
Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified
plugs and matching outlets will reduce the risk of electric shock.
b) Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes,
radiators, ranges, and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric
shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
c) Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power
tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
d) Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or
unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges, and
moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.
e) When operating a power tool outdoors only, use extension cords suitable for
outdoor use. The use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of
electric shock.
f) If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual
current device (RCD) protected supply. The use of an RCD reduces the risk of
electric shock.
3) Personal safety
a) Stay alert, watch what you are doing, and use common sense when operating a
power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence
of drugs, alcohol, or medication. A momentary lack of attention while
operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
b) Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective
equipment such as dust masks, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing
protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
c) Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position
before connecting to a power source and/or battery pack, picking up or
carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or
energizing power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.
d) Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A
wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result
in personal injury.
e) Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This
enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
f) Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Keep your hair,
clothing, and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewelry or long
hair can be caught in moving parts.
g) If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and
collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. The use
of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.
h) Do not let familiarity gained from frequent use of tools allow you to
become complacent and ignore tool safety principles. A careless action can
cause severe injury within a fraction of a second.
4) Power tool use and care
a) Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your
application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the
rate for which it was designed.
b) Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any
power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be
repaired.
c) Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or remove the battery pack,
if detachable, from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing
accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce
the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
d) Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow
persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the
power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
e) Maintain power tools and accessories. Check for misalignment or binding of
moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the
power tool’s operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use.
Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.
f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with
sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
g) Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits, etc., in accordance with
these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to
be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those
intended could result in a hazardous situation.
h) Keep handles and grasping surfaces dry, clean, and free from oil and
grease. Slippery handles and grasping surfaces do not allow for safe handling
and control of the tool in unexpected situations.
5) Battery tool use and care
a) Recharge only with the charger specified by the manufacturer. A charger
that is suitable for one type of battery pack may create a risk of fire when
used with another battery pack.
b) **WARNING! Use power tools only with specifically designated battery
packs and respectively battery types. Use of any other battery packs may
create a risk of explosions, injury, and fire.
c) When the battery pack is not in use, keep it away from other metal objects
like paper clips, coins, keys, nails, screws, or other small metal objects
that can make a connection from one terminal to another. Shorting the battery
terminals together may cause burns or a fire.
d) Under abusive conditions, liquid may be ejected from the battery; avoid
contact. If contact accidentally occurs, flush with water. If liquid contacts
eyes, additionally seek medical help. Liquid ejected from the battery may
cause irritation or burns.
e) Do not use a damaged or modified battery. Damaged or modified batteries can
behave unexpectedly and lead to fires, explosions or injuries.
f) Do not expose a battery to fire or high temperatures. Fire or temperatures
above 130°C (265°F) can cause an explosion.
g) Follow all the instructions for charging and never charge the battery or
the cordless tool outside the temperature range specified in the operating
instructions. Incorrect charging or charging outside the permitted temperature
range can destroy the battery and increase the fire risk.
6) Service
a) Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only
identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power
tool is maintained.
b) Never service damaged batteries. All maintenance of batteries should only
be carried out by the manufacturer or authorized customer service points.
1.3 Special safety instructions
R600 VarioClean:
Wear appropriate guide gloves (e.g. riveting glove left 72120, right 72121) to
guide the spiral. Damaged riveting gloves must not be worn again. (Riveting
gloves are not personal protective clothing as per 2016/425/EU – see Section
5.6 as well).
When using riveting gloves, always ensure that you also wear disposable latex
gloves inside the riveting gloves for hygienic reasons. (Damaged latex gloves
must not be worn again.)
The spirals must be removed completely from the holding cage before the
machine is turned on.
Wear suitable safety shoes when carrying out the cleaning work (insulation).
Always ensure that the pipe cleaning machine is switched to “0” or OFF before
you insert the plug into an electrical socket.
Whenever you use electrical devices, always adhere to the specified voltage
and generally work with a protective tube and safety gloves.
To prevent damage, use this machine and its accessories only to clean
wastewater pipes — never chimneys, wells, etc.
To prevent damage to the pipes or pipe bends, do not modify tools by grinding,
etc.
Use a camera system to spot the cause of the pipe blockage.
Only use electric lines that have been correctly installed as per the “VDE
regulations”.
Mechanical pipe cleaning should always be undertaken from above in the
direction of the stop plug.
Ensure that no water taps leading to the pipe to be processed are actuated
during the pipe cleaning. Congestion can occur here!
Never leave the machine unattended during pipe cleaning!
Protective covers: All of the rotating parts are made safe through the
use of protective covers. Removing and/or operating without these protective
covers is strictly forbidden!
Secure the working site (the road, the shaft) so that no non-involved people
will suffer injuries and always cover up open shafts or gullies.
Use a gas detector to detect the presence of toxic or explosive gases in the
area where you will be working in! The machine and the accessories should be
cleaned and disinfected after every use. The recommended personal protective
equipment should be worn for all work: a Safety helmet, safety shoes, and
safety vest! Your hands should be cleaned and disinfected after every
activity; as there is an increased risk of infection from germs!
Only wear gloves recommended by the manufacturer when handling the rotating
spiral. Latex or loose-fitting gloves or cloths can become wrapped around
the spiral and this might cause serious injuries. Do not allow the cutter to
jam whilst the spiral is still rotating. This might overload the spiral and
cause it to twist, kink or break, resulting in serious injuries. One person
must operate both the spiral and the switch. If the cutter becomes jammed, the
operator must be able to switch off the power tool in order to prevent the
spiral from twisting, kinking, or breaking.
Wear latex or rubber gloves inside the manufacturer’s recommended gloves, as
well as eye protection, face protection, protective clothing, and respiratory
protection if you suspect that there might be bacteria, chemicals, or other
toxic or infectious substances in the drainpipe. Drains can contain bacteria,
chemicals, and other substances that are corrosive, infectious, or toxic and
they might cause serious injuries.
Take hygienic precautions. Do not eat or smoke when handling or operating
the power tool. Always wash your hands and other body parts that were exposed
to the drain contents with hot soapy water after using the drain cleaning
equipment. This measure helps to reduce health risks that might arise from
being in contact with toxic or infectious materials. The drain cleaner is only
to be used in the permitted drain cleaner sizes. Using the wrong size drain
cleaner might cause the spiral to twist, kink or break, resulting in serious
injuries.
Always use the rear guide tube when operating the power tool and ensure that
the spiral never protrudes from it. This stops the spiral from whipping
around, which might result in an entanglement or serious injuries.
Charger and battery:
This charger is not intended for use by children and persons with physical,
sensory, or mental limitations or a lack of experience or knowledge. This
charger can be used by children aged 8 and above and by persons who have
physical, sensory, or mental limitations or a lack of experience or knowledge
if a person responsible for their safety supervises them or has instructed
them in the safe operation of the charger and they understand the associated
dangers. Otherwise, there is a danger of operating errors and injuries.
Supervise children during use, cleaning, and maintenance. This will ensure
that children do not play with the charger.
Do not charge non-rechargeable batteries.
Danger – electrical voltage!
Only use the charger indoors!
Protect the charger from
moisture!
Never allow children to use the machine. Children should be supervised to
ensure that they do not play with the tool. Keep children away from the
battery charger and the working area! Keep your battery charger out of reach
of children! Pull out the mains plug immediately if the battery charger starts
to smoke or flames emerge! Do not insert objects into the ventilation slots on
the battery charger there is a danger of electric shocks and short circuits!
Do not recharge a fully charged battery pack!
Protect battery packs from water and moisture!
Do not expose battery packs to naked flame!
Do not use faulty or deformed battery packs! In areas with high metal dust
exposure do not load any battery packs with AIR COOLED chargers. Do not open
battery packs! Do not touch or short-circuit battery packs!
Slightly acidic, flammable fluid may leak from defective Li-ion battery
packs!
If battery fluid leaks out and comes into contact with your skin, rinse
immediately with plenty of water. If battery fluid leaks out and comes into
contact with your eyes, wash them with clean water and seek medical attention
immediately!
Transporting li-ion battery packs:
The contained lithium-ion batteries are subject to the Dangerous Goods
Legislation requirements. The user can transport the batteries by road without
further requirements. When being transported by third parties (e.g.: air
transport or forwarding agency), special requirements on packaging and
labeling must be observed. For the preparation of the item being shipped,
consulting an expert for hazardous material is required. Only send the battery
pack if the housing is intact and no fluid is leaking. Remove the battery pack
from the machine for sending. Prevent the contacts from short-circuiting (e.g.
by protecting them with adhesive tape).
Dispatch batteries only when the housing is undamaged. Tape or mask off open
contacts and pack up the battery in such a manner that it cannot move around
in the packaging. Please also observe possibly more detailed national
regulations.
1.4 Residual risks**
Even when observing all of the safety instructions there are still some
residual risks remaining, for example spirals can overturn (create a loop if
the operating arc is too large) thereby creating the risk of clamping. Spirals
under tension can spring out of the pipe ~ a risk of injury!

The Vibration Total Value quoted in these instructions and the quoted noise
emission values were measured according to standardized measurement procedures
and can be used to compare one electric power tool with another. They can also
be used to make an initial estimate of the loading.
The quoted vibration and noise emissions can vary during the actual use of the
electric power tool dependent on the way in which the electric power tool is
used, in particular, what type of workpiece is being processed.
Establish additional safety measures to protect the operator which are based
upon an estimate of the vibration loading during the actual usage conditions
(in doing so taking account of parts of the operating cycle, for example,
times in which the electric power tool is switched and those in which it is
switched on but not running under load).

The function of the Unit
Optional:
The device can also be carried by the carrying strap, which is available as an
accessory when it has to be transported. Attach this by hooking the hooks on
the carrying strap in the eyelets.
When you use a carrying strap, the device must only be worn across your chest
or your back and it must NEVER be worn around your neck!
It should only be carried without the spiral or tools!
The strap must be completely removed before starting any work to prevent
accidents!

5.2 Changing the battery (B1)
Slide the battery in up to the stop. Pull the battery out to remove it.

If you press down on the button, all of the LEDs will light up for 3 seconds
(controller active) and so will the two LEDs in the housing.
Attention! Do not look directly into the LEDs in the housing. The danger
of being dazzled!
The controller will switch off automatically and all of the LEDs will go out
if no other switch is pressed within 5 minutes.
5.4 Fitting a standard spiral (C)
Attention! Only use correct spirals!
The spiral diameters and spiral lengths that can be used are listed in the
technical data.
The spirals can be connected to one another by using a coupling and divided
back into sections again using a separating key; do this by inserting the
separating key in the hole in the coupling and then pulling the coupling apart
sideways.
** Only use as many spiral pieces for as long as they are actually needed!
Never use a deformed spiral!
Take the spiral out of its holding basket.
Slide the spiral through the machine.
Attach the protective tube to the machine from the rear and then check that
the locking pin is locked in place.
Always use a protective tube! The protective tube acts as a vibration-
damping guide for the spiral, a dirt collector or protector, a safety
component for the operating personnel and it also prevents uncontrolled
knocking!
5.5 Fit 8 mm / 10 mm spirals (D)
For small bore pipes and pipe bends used 8 mm or 10 mm spirals (optional
accessories).
Pull the spirals approx. 30 cm out of the adapter magazine.
Push the adapter magazine into the machine from the rear and secure it.
To break the adapter magazine pulls the lever as far upward as possible.
5.6 Fitting a tool
** When using it for the first time to clear a blockage, only use a drill bit
with the smallest diameter at first and then drill into the blockage. When you
have drilled through or opened the blockage and drainage starts, you should
then use the largest-possible matching drill bit to completely drill out the
blockage. When the blockage has been loosened, rinse and if available, use a
chain sling drilling tool (with running water if possible) to clean the pipe
wall.
Different tools can be attached to the standard spiral to deal with different
types of blockages.

The funnel-shaped design gives this tool a large coverage area and it can also
be used as a retrieval tool for any spirals remaining inside the pipe
| Forked cutting head: Used to ream out grease deposits or to tear up rags
and similar materials
| Shovelhead drill bit: Special curved tool for use with slurried or sanded
deposits
Attaching: Push the tool onto the coupling until it latches in. Removing:
Push the separating key into the hole and then slide the tool sideways and out
of the coupling.
5.7 Carrying position
The clamping lever can be locked in place for carrying: do this press down
on the clamping lever (1.) and pulling the lock (2.). Briefly press down on
the clamping lever to release the lock.
5.8 Safety gloves
Information brochure about safety gloves as per EU Directive 2016/425/EU.
Appendix II, Section
1.4 for minimal hazards only.
This pair of gloves is exempted under Chapter II, Article 8, Paragraph 3 of
the prototype test and is assigned to Category 1. From this, it is assumed
that their effectiveness against minor hazard-free risks has been perceived.
The protection class is determined by the requirements, which may be of a
mechanical, chemical, or thermal nature or due to similar influences that do
not call for a Category 2 protection class. A risk analysis must be carried
out through a wearer trial if the required size is to be specified so that the
glove fits. It should be noted that the function might be negatively affected
when using accessories, such as under-gloves.
The gloves must be properly stored, i.e. in boxes in dry spaces. Effects such
as humidity, temperature, light, and natural changes in materials over time
may lead to changes in the characteristics. Shelf life cannot be specified,
because that will depend on the degree of wear, the type of use, and the
working sites.
We recommend that you clean it using commercially available cleaning utensils
(e.g. brushes, polishing cloths, etc.). Washing or chemical cleaning requires
prior consultation with an authorized specialist company.
The manufacturer can accept no liability for changes in the characteristics.
Always ensure that the gloves are intact before you use them.
5.9 Commissioning
** The pipe cleaning machine should solely be operated by instructed and
authorized personnel!
Check the electrical installation at the workplace!
Slide the battery into the housing and check that it is securely seated.
5.10 Operation (E)
The pipe cleaning machine is only to be used after taking into account all of
the notices concerning the safety of people and the machine!
Check to ensure that the protective tube is attached to the machine.**
Attach the protective tube first and then slide in a suitable spiral and
attach a suitable tool.
Position the machine so that it is about 50 cm away from the opening in the
pipe that has to be cleaned. Use the button to switch the controller to ready
for operation and set it to clockwise rotation.
Use the +/- buttons to set the speed level. Select the speed level according
to the working process (unblocking, cleaning, spin-cleaning). The LEDs on the
control panel will light up according to your selection.
Feed the spiral in so that it is about 50 cm into the pipe. Now press the
clamping lever so that the spiral rotates.
** Wear the enclosed special protective gloves to guide the spiral in and
always wear protective goggles when working!
Release the clamping lever and then slide the spiral further into the pipe.
Repeat the procedure until you can feel counter-pressure; you have reached the
blockage!
Pull the spiral out of the machine until it is pre-tensioned into a working
arc.
Do not let the working arc become too big – the risk of injuries!
Press the clamping lever and then move the spiral’s working arc up against the
blockage.
If the spiral has penetrated the pipe so far that the working arc starts to
collapse, release the clamping lever, pull the spiral out of the machine, and
make a new working arc.
Repeat the process by pulling it back and forth until the blockage has been
cleared, then release the clamping lever and pull the spiral out.
If it is difficult to move, press the clamping lever and allow the spiral to
rotate briefly.
If it is difficult to move, you must ensure that rotating right / left stops
the spiral from jamming through starting (right) and releasing (left).
** Release the clamping lever and then switch the machine to counter-
clockwise rotation (press the counter-clockwise rotation button) if the tool
gets stuck in the blockage!
Loosen the tool stuck in the blockage by moving the spiral back and forth and
rotating it right / left with the clamping lever pressed.
**** The LEDs in the frame will start to flash if the battery charge level is
too low (see Troubleshooting).
5.11 Shut-down
Keep the button pressed down for 2 seconds to deactivate the controller and
then remove the battery.
Remove the guide tube from the device.
5.12 Charger and battery (H)

Start of operation
Before plugging in, check to see that the rated mains voltage and mains
frequency, as specified on the rating label, match your power supply.
Devices such as this one, which generate direct current, may have an effect on
basic residual current circuit breakers. Use type F or better, with a release
current of max. 30 mA.
Before commissioning the charger, ensure that the air slots are free. The
minimum distance to other objects is 5 cm/ 2″.
Self-test:
Insert mains supply plug. The warning display (4) and the operating
indicator (3) light up one after the other for approx. 1 second and the
installed fan runs for approx. 5 seconds.
Battery pack: Charge the battery pack before use (1). If performance
diminishes, recharge the battery pack. The ideal storage temperature is
between 10°C / 50° F and 30°C / 86° F.
The permissible storage temperature is between 0°C and 50°C / 32° – 122° F.
Li-ion battery packs have a capacity and signal indicator: (6) Press the
button (5), the LEDs indicate the charge level. If one LED is flashing, the
battery pack is almost flat and must be recharged.
Handling
Charging battery pack:
Push the battery pack completely to the stop on the sliding seat (2).
The operating indicator (3) flashes.
Conservation charge
Once the charging process has finished, the battery charger automatically
switches to conservation mode.
The battery pack can remain in the battery charger and is therefore always
ready for use.

Fault: Warning display (4) lights up continuously.
The battery pack is not charged. Temperature too high/ too low. When the
temperature of the battery pack is between 0 °C and 50 °C / 32° – 122° F, the
charging process begins automatically
Warning display (4) flashes.
The battery pack is defective. Remove the battery pack immediately from the
charger.
The battery pack was not pushed correctly onto the sliding seat (2).
Care and Maintenance (F)
R600 VarioClean:
Always remove the battery before starting any work on the machine!
Use universal grease to lubricate the machine’s 2 lubricating points.
Lubricating point 1: daily or after it has been used.
Lubricating point 2: every 100 operating hours; you will have to unscrew the
left cover to do this.
The device should be handled carefully and cleaned regularly. The spirals and
tools should be cleaned and preserved after every use. We recommend using our
“ROWONAL” special care product.
All of the servicing, maintaining, and repair work is only be undertaken
by instructed specialist personnel!
Charger:
Repairs to the charger must only be carried out by qualified electricians.
If the mains connection cable of this tool is damaged, in order to prevent
endangering personnel and property it must be replaced by the manufacturer, or
the Customer Service of the manufacturer, or a similarly qualified person.
Replacing the clamping jaws (G)
If the spiral stops rotating during operation and starts to slip, this means
that the clamping jaws are fouled with grease and they must be cleaned or else
they are worn and must be replaced.
Unscrew the right cover
Remove the sealing plug. Release the locking nut and turn back the adjusting
screw until the clamping jaw springs relax.
Pull the hand lever upwards and hold it there, now remove the clamping jaws by
pressing them together.
Fit the new clamping jaws.
Retighten the adjusting screw until the maximum spiral diameter can still be
pushed through.
Retighten the locking nut and refit the sealing plug.
Reattach the cover.

Components of the unit are recyclable materials and should be put to
recycling. For this purpose registered and certified recycling companies are
available. For environmentally friendly disposal of non-recyclable parts (e.g.
electronic waste) please contact your local waste disposal authority.
Old batteries can be taken to your specialist dealer who will dispose of them
in conformity with environmental regulations.
For EU countries only:
Do not dispose of electric tools with domestic waste. In accordance with
European Directive 2012/19/EU on waste electrical and electronic equipment and
its implementation as national law, electric tools that are no longer
serviceable must be collected separately and utilized for environmentally
compatible recycling.
