Coils

Overview

The EZ-Slider 80M and EZ-Slider 40/30M coils can be used as standard loading coils or as a matching circuit to obtain minimal SWR values. The coils are tuned by moving the slider coil to adjust the impedance for the desired frequency of operation. This changes the inductive coupling to coils inside the units. This changes the total inductance of the coil.
The EZ-Slider coils are intended to be used with a radiating element (stinger) of at least 17 feet (5.17m) in length, and with a suitable counterpoise. They are designed to be inserted into the base of a 20 meter vertical antenna.

Installing the coil

The EZ-Slider coils feature a 3/8-24 stud on the bottom that can be secured to a tripod such as the EZ-Tripod base from Amratek Products. The EZ-Slider coil is simply threaded into the female threaded receptacle on the base. The coil should be turned finger tight. Do not use tools or your full hand force. A radiating element such as the EZ-Stinger from Amratek Products can then be threaded into the female threaded receptacle at the top of the coil.

Do not overtighten the coil or radiating element!
Over tightening can cause mating hardware to come loose when removing the coil. Be gentle. The coil should be snug but not tight. The same is true when threading the radiating element into the top of the coil.

Selecting Modes
The EZ-Slider coils can be used as loading coils or matching networks.
A loading coil is a variable inductor that is adjusted to resonate with the capacitance of an electrically short radiating element.
A matching network is a combination of a variable inductor and a fi xed capacitor that can resonate the system and provide a more desirable input impedance.

Loading Coil Mode
There is a short black wire with a clip on the end attached to the bottom of the EZ-Slider coil. See fi gure1. To use the coil as a loading coil (a variable inductor), this clip must be connected to the stud as shown in Figure 1. Note that the EZ-Slid-er 30/40M can only be used in loading coil mode on 30 meters.

Matching Network Mode
To use the EZ-Slider coils as a matching network, connect the clip on the bottom of the coil to the hub of the EZ-Tripode base, as shown in Figure 2, or the common of the base being used.

Adjusting Inductance

Each EZ-Slider coil has a high resolution scale which allows users to record the position of the slider coil at various operating frequencies. See Figure 3.
To move the slider, loosen the nylon thumb screw and move the slider to the desired position. Now tighten the thumb screw just enough to hold the slider in place. It requires only 1/2 turn counter-clockwise to loosen the slider and 1/2 turn clockwise to tighten the slider.

Do not overtighten the thumb screw!
Do not use a tool to tighten the nylon thumb screw. It is possible to strip the threads of the thumb screw if excessive torque is applied. It takes very little torque to hold the slider in place. A strong person may be able to strip the threads without a tool; so be careful.

30 Meter Band
The EZ-Slider 30/40M coil can be used for both the 40 and 30 meter bands, however on 30 meters it can only be used as a loading coil. To cover the 30 meter band, the slider coil must be raised all the way to the top, and a shorting jumper must be connected between the terminals on the slider as shown in Figure 4.

You can make your own jumper, or purchase the optional 30 M jumper (SJ-30M) from Amratek Products.
The frequency can be raised if necessary by connecting the jumper to the terminals on the top of the coil as shown in figure 5.

SWR Curves
The following fi gures show typical SWR curves for the EZ-Slider 80M and the EZ-Slider 40/30M coils. The Blue areas show the U.S. Amateur band frequen-cy range. You can see how the matching mode can lower the SWR compared to loading coil mode on 80 and 40 meters. Figure 9 shows an SWR curve for the 40/30 meter coil in 30 meter loading coil mode.
