Pre-installation
This Quick start guide contains everything you need to set up your GridION™ and to check that the device is ready for use.

*The GridION Mk1 ships with 5 x power cables (1 US, 1 UK, 1 EU, 1 CN, 1
AUS) for international use.
What’s in the box
Set up your device
- Unpack your GridION device*.
- Attach the cables and peripherals as shown opposite.
- Connect the power supply.
- Press the power button.
Rear input/output
Only use the ports and connections coloured in blue for installation.
- Place device on a well-supported, strong, clean bench. Allow 30 cm clearance rear and sides, and do not cover ventilation grilles. See user manual for detailed installation advice.
† If using a HDMI-only monitor, use the included DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter.
Log in to MinKNOW™

Log in to your GridION Password: grid.

Open MinKNOW
Click the wheel icon on the desktop to load MinKNOW, the device operating software. -
Log in to MinKNOW
Use your Oxford Nanopore account details.
Note : follow the pop-up tutorials in MinKNOW to familiarise yourself with the software.
Update software
For the latest sequencing features, update MinKNOW:
Power off the device (step 4).
Power off
Follow the workflow below to correctly power off your device:
When powering on the device again, wait 10 seconds before pressing the power
button.
Repeat step 2 (Log in to MinKNOW) and then proceed to step 5 (Perform a
hardware check).

Perform a hardware check
A hardware check is required before performing your first GridION sequencing run. To run a hardware check, follow the on-screen instructions in MinKNOW, then follow the instructions below. You will require your five GridION Configuration Test Cells (CTCs).
Hardware check overview:
- Insert the CTCs into the device as shown and close the lid of the device.
- In the MinKNOW software, the flow cell status indicators (the five boxes) will change colour from grey to white.
- Press Select all available. This will change the colour of the flow cell status indicators (the five boxes) on the MinKNOW hardware check panel to dark blue.
- Press Start in the bottom right.
- Check the flow cell positions show a to pass the hardware check.
- Remove the CTCs from the flow cell positions after you complete the hardware check.
