INTRODUCTION

  • One of the most important elements in the organization of animal reproduction is the proper detection of estrous. This is due to the close correlation between efficient insemination and the time it is done.

  • Research has shown that farm personnel detect heat in about 50% of animals. Much attention is therefore paid to careful observation of animals, not only during working hours but 24h a day if possible. This however, creates certain difficulties of a practical nature, negatively influencing estrous detection.

  • It should be emphasized that a very important aspect of organizing reproduction is also the ability to detect early pregnancy or the following estrous after unsuccessful insemination.

  • Knowledge of the physiology of estrous and in particular cyclic changes taking place in the reproductive organs, allowed the discovery that together with changes in the ovary, changes in the electrical resistance of vaginal mucus occur.

  • An interdependence was also noticed between changes in vaginal mucus resistance and changes in blood levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and milk progesterone levels.
Studies on the properties of vaginal mucus have established that the closer to estrous the less electrical resistance of vaginal mucus.

  • The above phenomena and interdependence of mucus resistance in the vagina of animals have been taken advantage of by DRAMIŃSKI in the construction of our DRAMIŃSKI ESTROUS DETECTOR.

  • This instrument enables quick and easy determination of the onset of estrous and early confirmation of pregnancy.

DESCRIPTION

The DRAMINSKI Estrous Detector consists of a measurement probe, electronic unit and handle containing a standard 9 volt battery.
The electronic unit is equipped with an LCD panel for reading measurements.
At the end of the probe there are two metal electrodes parallel to each other which serve to measure resistance. The magnitude of current flowing between the two electrodes and the electrical field created is absolutely harmless to animals and humans.
The entire device is waterproof, which enables washing and easy maintenance of hygiene.

DRAMIŃSKI Estrous Detector:

  • enables quick and optimal covering of animals that come into heat atypically.
  • enables detection of silent estrous
  • enables detection of heat in animals with irregular heat
  • enhances insemination efficiency markedly
  • has a positive influence on farm8hand discipline
  • improves the economic performance of your farm

Additionally:

enables early detection of gestation or the next estrous if no fertilization occurs

OPERATION

While testing the apparatus in the open air i.e. with open electrodes check the following:

  1. Press the ON/OFF switch. After pressing the button two dashes are displayed indicating the device readiness to work.
  2. Press the switch three times – the digits 1, 2, 3 will be displayed (a-c).
  3. Press the switch last time to see the digits “1 0” (d) indicating that the battery is connected and the instrument operating, but no measurement is being taken.

An additional function of the LCD display is to indicate battery failure. When LO BAT blinks on the display you will soon need a fresh battery. The battery is dead when the signal is constant.
The lowest scale is 10 units, while the range of measurement is from 0 to 1990 units. When this scale is exceeded the digits “1 0” appear on the LCD display, signaling overflow (as in the case of the electrodes being tested while in contact with the atmosphere).
The range of measurements of the detector is several times that of the vaginal mucus electrical resistance to be tested, and in practice this scale is never exceeded.

FAMILIARISATION

Before commencing measurements it is recommended that the first time user:

  1. Do some measurements on some animals which are evidently in heat.
  2. Do some measurements on some animals not in heat or pregnant.

The functioning of the instrument can be checked in the following way:

  • Immerse the probe in a vessel of clean water and take a reading. It should be “1 0” indicating that the measurement scale has been exceeded as resistance of clean water is great. In practice we will never exceed the scale because max. vaginal mucus resistance is many times less than the max. scale.
  • Next, put a little pinch of salt into the water, mix well, then immerse the probe again.
  • After addition of salt the result is clearly lower than before.
  • Salt lowers the resistance of the solution (less resistance8lower result).
  • Addition of some more salt lowers the result even further.
This experiment shows well how the instrument works. It also serves to demonstrate how the presence of urine (which contains salt) on the electrodes causes an abnormal lowering of results.

TAKING A READING

  1. Check the electronic functioning of the DRAMIŃSKI ESTROUS DETECTOR in contact with the atmosphere, making sure there is no need to change the battery.
  2. Prepare a disinfectant fluid and disinfect the probe in accordance with the steps given in the chapter on disinfection.
  3. If vaginal labia or the surroundings are dirty, wash and clean before inserting the probe.
  4. Spread apart the vulva and delicately insert the probe so that its end reaches the lower depression which ought to be reached at a length of 3/4 of the probe. When this depth is reached some resistance is felt. Then, carefully make 285 half8turns of the probe. Rectal examination can help to determine if the probe is at a correct depth.
  5. Press the ON/OFF switch. After pressing the button two dashes are displayed indicating the device readiness to work.
  6. Press the switch once again 8 the digit “1” will be displayed. It means that first reading was memorized (a).
  7. Next, press the switch two more times to memorized readings 2 (b) and 3 (c).
  8. Press the switch last time to see the lowest result (d)
  9. Remove the probe gently.
  10. Disinfect as instructed in the section “DISINFECTING” and replace in storage box.

INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS

In fig.1 typical changes in vaginal mucus resistance are presented during the estrous cycle. The moment heat occurs is indicated.
If the animal is not in heat there is high resistance. As the peak phase of estrous approaches resistance lowers and then rises to a high level after estrous.
Resistance remains high until the next estrous, when it falls again.
In practice it is essential to record the minimum level of resistance and then the moment when a distinct rise in resistance occurs, thus during estrous it is advised to take measurements regularly.
If measurements are too infrequent estrous may be missed.DRAMINSKI

In fig.2 changes in the pattern of resistance are shown in animals that have been effectively fertilized either by insemination or mating. In this instance resistance remains high after heat until parturition.

DETECTING ESTROUS

Heat detection is illustrated in fig. 3. It can be seen here that detection depends on registering the period when resistance is at a minimum and the following sharp rise. The rise in resistance indicates ovulation within a few hours or so and is the best period for INSEMINATION or MATING.DRAMINSKI

  • A fall in resistance does not automatically signal the onset of estrous. Further measurements are necessary to determine the minimum value and the following sharp rise in resistance which indicates estrous.
  • Heat does not last long thus, during this period, measurements should be taken more than once daily.
  • NOTE! Values shown in the pictures are TYPICAL, the result of many months of our research and are compatible with results obtained in other countries.
  • However, lower values during heat are sometimes met, as are higher values out of estrous. Therefore, each animal ought to be treated individually.
  • However, in practice results sometimes may differ regarding resistance during the various phases of the cycle in animals.

DETECTING EARLY PREGNANCY

This is done approx. 38) weeks after insemination or mating. It is best to begin measurements when the next heat is expected if insemination was unsuccessful. If resistance remains high for a few days, it will mean gestation is in progress.
On the other hand, less resistance will indicate the animal is not pregnant and heat is approaching.

CLOSING REMARKS

  1. Store the DRAMIŃSKI ESTROUS DETECTOR in a dry place at room temperature.
  2. For large scale farming it is better to use one instrument for one shed.
  3. Normal veterinary hygiene is easy to maintain by ensuring your DETECTOR is cleaned and disinfected after each use.
  4. DRAMIŃSKI kindly asks all users to send in any comments or observations concerning exploitation and results obtained while using the DRAMIŃSKI ESTROUS DETECTOR.

DISINFECTION

  • Before and after each measurement the DRAMIŃSKI ESTROUS DETECTOR must be disinfected.
  • Dirty, oily electrodes will result in false results (too high). Also, the presence of other fluids on the electrodes such as urine, will result in too low results being obtained. Thus, it is important to keep the instrument clean.
  • Thorough and careful washing as well as disinfection is one of the most important conditions for proper usage of the instrument. The probe should be wiped with gauze, lignin or paper tissue so that no dirt in the form of faeces, mucus or hair is left on it, especially around the electrodes. To properly disinfect the instrument, the probe should be cleaned of faeces, mucus, hair and other dirt under running water. Then it should be immersed in a disinfecting solution.

Warning!

  • Do not use boiling or very hot water while washing the instrument.
  • For disinfection a solution of disinfectant prepared in two vessels (plastic buckets) may be used.
  • The first bucket is for initial washing and the second for final disinfection.
  • The concentration of the disinfectant should be according to the producer’s recommendations.

Warning!

  • The disinfectant and its solution may cause irritation of the vaginal mucous membrane, then it is advisable to wipe off the probe before insertion.
  • While carrying out a large number of measurements the disinfectant solution becomes less effective and a new solution is necessary before further measurements.

Note! Keeping the DRAMIŃSKI ESTROUS DETECTOR absolutely clean is very important for gaining the best results.
Carelessness about hygiene may result in damage or even infection of the animal’s uterus. After each usage the instrument should be carefully washed, disinfected and dried.

BATTERY REPLACEMENT

  1. Unscrew both screws which fix the cover found at the bottom of the handle.
  2. Remove the battery from within the handle and undo it from the battery clips.
