Low-Profile, “Long Distance” Microphone Stands

When the microphone is on a conventional stand (left), direct waves reach the microphone before floor-reflected waves, which travel a longer distance. Depending upon the distances involved, phase cancellation is more or less severe. Typically, the resultant response curve (right) shows extensive “holes” or response losses at various frequencies, and an unnatural “hollow” sound results.

When the microphone is lowered to just above the floor (left), both floor reflected and direct waves reach the microphone virtually simulta}:leously- without phase cancellation-and the resultant sound, as shown in the response curve (right), is full and smooth-without cancellation holes.

IMPROVE SOUND QUALITY

Extensive research by Shure on the effects of phase cancellation in distant microphone pick-up techniques has produced the first microphone stands specifically designed to optimize the location of microphones to eliminate the typical “hollow” sound associated with distant pick-up. The S53P and S55P stands hold the microphone suspended only a fraction of an inch above the floor, so floor-reflected sound waves reach the microphone at the same time as direct waves, ilnd philse cancellation is minimized or eliminated. Sound quality is improved, the hollow sound is eliminated, and, depending on conditions, up to 6 db of additional gain can be obtained before feedback.

.. . IN THESE APPLICATIONS
The S53P and S55P stands are ideal for any application in which the distance from source to microphone is greater than the height of the source from the floor, or when a simply blended, “one-source” input is desired, and a distantly positioned, single microphone is used … such as in choral, orchestral and ensemble musical events, and dramatic or musical stage presentations.

EXCELLENT NOISE ISOLATION
The S53P and S55P stands provide very effective mechanical shock isolation, so floor vibration noises and the noise transmitted by conventional microphone stands are sharply reduced. Both models are lightweight and collapsible, and their low-profile design allows them to be used unobtrusively right on stage.

“DISTANT PICKUP” MICROPHONE ISOLATION STAND

The Shure Models S53P and S55P are designed specifically for “distant pickup” microphone situations, where the distance from source to microphone is greater than the height of the source from the floor. When a conventional microphone stand is used as in Fig. 1 a, reflections from the floor will arrive out of phase at the microphone, and cancel out certain groups of tones. If the microphone is placed on the floor, as in 1 b, these cancellations cannot occur, and the tonal balance is similar to a close microphone technique.
To be effective, this stand must support the micro phone as close to the floor as possible without touch ing (approximately V8 inch). It must also provide excellent shock isolation, so that floor vibrations are not introduced into the microphone. The S53P and S55P fulfill these requirements.
The Shure Model S53P is designed especially for the Model SM53 Unidirectional Microphone. The Shure Model S55P is designed for use with the Models 545, 548, 565, SM57, and SM58. (NOTE: The Model S55P is not recommended for microphones with switches mounted in the handle).
The S53P and S55P Isolation Mounts are of rugged black plastic, rubber, and stainless steel construction which will withstand the high temperatures of stage and television lights. The legs of the S53P and S55P are spread apart to form a tripod microphone stand and may be neatly folded together, making the entire stand a size which can easily be carried in a brief case.

INSTALLATION

  1. Evenly spread the stainless steel legs of S53P or S55P so as to form a tripod microphone stand.
  2. Slip cable end of microphone into isolation mount, using a twisting motion on the micro phone for ease of installation.
  3. Insert the microphone into the isolation mount to a point where microphone is held firmly enough to prevent its falling out. Attach cable to microphone connector.
  4. Adjust swivel so that grille of microphone is approximately Va” off floor; aim stand to direc tion of source.
