  3. Remove the protective cover. (Fig 4) CAUTION:
Do not remove the plastic protective cover while the tool is running. Removing the cover may damage the unit and can cause injuries.

BEFORE GRINDING

Before grinding an animal’s nails:

  1. Get the animal used to having his paws touched and handled before showing him the nail grinder. Take a few minutes to manipulate his paws while giving him positive reinforcement.
  2. Let him sniff the nail grinder while it is turned off.
  3. Turn the grinder on so he can get used to the sound it makes. Have him sit while the tool is in your hand and running.
  4. Once the animal is used to the tool, try touching it to his nails. Do not do any actual grinding yet.
  5. You may need to repeat the above steps a few times.

NAIL ANATOMY

Before grinding the animal’s nails, you need to be able to identify the “quick” of the nail. A dog’s nail is made up of a hard outer cover, which protects the quick, which is the inner, soft part containing blood vessels and nerve endings. Should you cut the quick while grinding, the animal will feel pain and the nail will start to bleed. In dogs with light-colored nails, the quick can usually be seen as pinkish, which makes it easier to avoid. If the dog has both light- and dark-colored nails, you may estimate the length of the quick in dark nails based on the light-colored nails. Keep checking the animal’s nails and watch for a dark spot in the middle of the grinding area. This indicates the start of the quick; do not grind into this. This diagram shows the ideal angle in which to trim or grind an animal’s nails and the approximate location of the quick.

USER MAINTENANCE

  • Brush or use a soft cloth to remove nail debris from the nail grinder after each use.
  • Remove the protective cover and rinse with water to remove the nail debris after use. Make sure the cover is dry when reassembled onto the unit.
  • Replace grinding bands and grinding attachments when worn.
  • Store attachments when not in use to prevent damage or loss.
Never use the cord to pull the nail grinder. Never twist or otherwise obstruct the cord. To store, coil cord loosely and secure with a twist tie.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

  • Install the desired attachment.
  • Turn the grinder on using the ON/OFF switch.
  • Separate the animal’s toes using your thumb between the pads, and hold the paw securely.
  • Hold the grinder like a pencil and begin grinding from the underside to the top of the nail to ensure a smooth edge.
  • Gently run the grinder on each nail using a continuous side-to-side motion.
  • Avoid holding the grinding tip in one place to prevent over-grinding or unevenness.
  • Do not apply excessive force. Let the action of the nail grinder do the work for you.
  • For best results on long-haired breeds, push coat hair away from the pet’s paw to prevent tangling and injury. To easily contain the coat, place a nylon stocking or thin sock over the pet’s paw and push nails through the loose weave to allow access to exposed nails.
  • For larger dogs, it is often easier to pull the front paw forward to grind nails. For smaller dogs, it may be easier to hold the paw up, beneath the body. Be careful not to entangle hair.
  • Nails do not require trimming before grinding. If desired, nails can be trimmed with a guillotine or scissor-style nail trimmer before grinding. In this instance, the nail grinder can be used after trimming to shape and smooth out rough edges.
  • Do not operate the grinder continuously for more than 10 minutes. Allow the unit to cool before using it again.

CHANGING ATTACHMENTS

  • Make sure the grinder is turned off before changing the grinding tips.

  • To unlock the collet nut, depress the triangular shaft lock at the top of the handle and rotate the collet nut by hand until the lock engages the shaft, preventing further rotation.
CAUTION : Do not press the shaft lock button while the tool is running.

  • Loosen the collet nut by turning it counterclockwise with the provided wrench.

  • Remove the attachment and insert the replacement.

  • Make sure the shaft is inserted into the collet opening as far as it will go.

  • While depressing the shaft lock, tighten the collet nut by turning it clockwise with the provided wrench until attachment is securely clamped in place. Be sure attachment is clamped with as short a shaft as possible to prevent bending and vibration, and to prevent the grinding head from touching the protective cover. (See Figs 5 & 6)

  • Release the shaft lock to lock the collet nut in place.
