Additional instructions

Recognition of carbon monoxide
Carbon monoxide is a kind of colorless, odorless, and deadly toxic gas which is produced when any combustible materials burns.
Higher concentration of CO will be produced when materials are burned in the air with limited space. When people breathe in a certain amount of CO, who will cause poisoning and death. The Consumer Product Safety Committees of many countries have warned the public, that the harm of deadly household gases, and make carbon monoxide poisoning as the first public safety problem.

How is carbon monoxide produced
In the home that the carbon monoxide produced by heating and burning, which main sources are kitchenware, heating and heating device. Such as stove, water heater, fireplace, wood stove carbon grill, natural gas cage, heating device, micro generator etc. In the garage that carbon monoxide is emitted from engine when the car is started.
When devices are in well-ventilation and normal working state,the CO will be produced very little, and will be discharge to the outside of the house soon, and will not harm to the human body.
However, when the indoor oxygen is insufficient and burning is insufficient, or the device fails, the higher concentration of CO will be emitted, which due to poor ventilation that the air flow speed will be not distributed quickly, and will be accumulated to harm human health.

Effects of carbon monoxide on human health
Carbon monoxide is a kind of colorless, odorless, and non-irritating gas, which is classified as chemical asphyxiant, and the direct manifestation of carbon monoxide poisoning is hypoxia.

When people inhale carbon monoxide, which will be quickly absorbed through the lung, and spread through the alveolar capillary membrane in the blood, and combing with hemoglobin to form COHb (carboxyhemoglobin, this process is reversible).
But there is a small amount of CO in the plasma. The hemoglobin

\(2\)

There are many other forms and papers on this topic. The article of The American Department of Health, education and welfare mentions when concentration of COHb is 3%, the perceptible visual acuity will be impaired. Recently, Kleinman et suggested that the normal subjects who exercise endurance decreased after receiving a dose of 100 ppm carbon monoxide for one hour.

Chronic effects on high risk groups
People with coronary artery disease who exposed in low concentration of carbon monoxide environment will reduce their ability to exercise. Those sick who exposed in the low CO concentration can speed up exercise-induced angina. Carbon monoxide can cross the placental barrier and cause harm to the normal development of the fetus.

Due to organ problems or special changes, many high-risk groups are sensitive to carbon monoxide. The high-risk groups are as following:

  • People with reduced oxygen carrying capacity due to anaemia or other hemoglobin diseases;
  • People who have a fever hyperthyroidism, and pregnancy need more oxygen;
  • People who lack of oxygen due to lack of breath;
  •  People who have heart disease, vascular insufficiency. Such as brain hypoxia and peripheral vascular disease.

Normal COHb concentration
In normal condition, the concentration of COHb is very low in human body, from 0.3% to 0.7%, which cannot be consider harmless to the human body.

Smoking
The CO concentration of smokers is very high, which changing from 5% to 9%, and people who smoke cigar may be over 10%.

Early symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning :
It is usually headache, have blurred vision, fatigue, nausea,vomiting, sleepiness, disorientation, and flu-like symptoms should be aware that may be caused by carbon monoxide poisoning. The symptoms will be improved after they leave or after a long time but will be not disappeared.
Inhaling a high concentration of carbon monoxide can be deadly in a few minutes, also inhaling a low concentration of CO for a long time is dangerous. Long-term expose in the low concentration of CO can cause permanent damage to the heart and brain.

The harm of carbon monoxide to the family
According to some clinical records, the death rate caused by carbon monoxide poisoning ranks first among all kinds of poisoning death in the united states. At least 10,000 Americans are harmed by CO poisoning every year.
Everyone may be more or less affected by carbon monoxide in daily life. But experts say unborn babies, children, elderly and people who have heart or respiratory disease are weaker to resist carbon monoxide. They are more easily to be death or serious harm caused by carbon monoxide.

For health and safety, you need to know the source of carbon monoxide that may be produced in home. The chimney and vent of kitchenware and equipment in use shall be kept in a good and unblocked condition. Please use burner equipment correctly, do not use burning and high heat appliance in the closed airtight room, and narrow airtight bathroom. Maintain and check gas appliances and gas supply systems regularly. Such as cracks in the heat exchanger in the stove, gas leakage from the vent exhaust of the water heater, or nest of bird blocking the flue, etc,which may cause the carbon monoxide.
In addition to the use of the burner, you should also know more about the early symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. If you suspect yourself by carbon monoxide poisoning, evacuate to the outside and ask for urgent help. Blood test is the most correct way to determine whether it is CO poisoning
Please use the Carbon Monoxide Alarm correctly, let you know the harm of existence carbon monoxide earlier, and manage or evacuate in time to prevent the CO poisoning.

The harm of carbon monoxide to the family

WARNING :
The Carbon Monoxide Alarm is used to remind people the existence of carbon monoxide, which people can manage and evacuate in time. However, it can not prevent the leakage of carbon monoxide.

Poisoning symptoms of carbon monoxide

  • Common mild symptoms :
    Slight headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue.

  • Common moderate symptoms:
    Headache, drowsiness, confusion, tachycardia

  • Common severe symptoms :
    Spasm, unconsciousness, cardiopulmonary failure, that can cause brain damage and death.

Attention: The symptoms of CO poisoning in the above list are for healthy adults. As for high-risk groups that the response is different.

Treatment of carbon monoxide poisoning
Anyone who is suspected of carbon monoxide poisoning should evacuate the area with potential risk of CO immediately, and breathe fresh air and go to the hospital for examination. Carbon monoxide poisoning can be determined by blood test of carbon monoxide hemoglobin test, which can check the amount of CO in blood. For test accurately, which must be checked immediately after inhale of carbon monoxide. Acute carbon monoxide poisoning is usually treated by oxygen uptake. When the poisoning is severe (such as unconsciousness), who should be treated in the hyperbaric oxygen room, which needs to be treated by the doctors.

How to deal with harmful CO or warn of CO Alarm
Please know some common sense of carbon monoxide, and know how to determine whether the family members have symptoms of CO poisoning. Many reports of carbon monoxide poisoning point out that when the victims realize the situation is not good, they are already unconsciousness, lost sense of direction to escape from the house or call for help. Children or elderly are the first to be affected.
When you and your family have symptoms that described in article 5 of this chapter (Poisoning symptoms of carbon monoxide), you should consult the doctor immediately, though it is a mild symptom.

WARNING :
Carbon monoxide is a kind of a toxic gas that can be deadly.
