Introduction

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to explore and use different combined techniques to produce finished drawings from design concepts which are reviewed and adjusted during the work in progress. This unit relates to drawing as an art form and differs from units that focus on drawing as a visual representation tool. The unit applies to those who are still developing their expertise in design and technique. They work under supervision but have some independence and use discretion and judgement within defined guidelines. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication

At the end of this unit, you must be able to:

  2. Prepare and realise drawing work
  3. Maintain resources and evaluate drawing work

In this unit, you will complete the following assessments:

  • Assessment Task 1: Written Assignment
  • Assessment Task 2: Exploration of ideas
  • Assessment Task 3: Experimentation of Techniques
  • Assessment Task 4: Create three drawings
  • Assessment Task 5: Evaluation of the drawings

Assessment Task 1: Written Assignment

Instructions for this task:

You are to answer the following questions. These can be handwritten, or word processed. If handwritten, they must be neatly written and legible for the assessor to be able to mark them. You must reference to the source of information for each answer.

You will be required to have a good understanding of the following areas:

  1. Methods of exploring techniques to achieve different effects in drawings
  2. Historical and contemporary drawing practice
  3. Tools and equipment used to produce drawings, including:
    • a. key physical features and uses
    • b. cleaning and maintenance techniques
    • c. storage requirements
  4. Physical properties and capabilities of different materials and techniques for producing drawings
  5. Procedures for working safely and sustainably with drawing materials, tools and equipment

Benchmark

You must get all questions 100% correct and all documentation requested in this assessment is submitted to gain satisfaction in this task. Resources required for this assessment task:

Assessment Task 2: Exploration of ideas

Instructions for this task:

You are to create explore ideas and experiment with drawing techniques as listed below in the task instructions with the aim of devising three ideas for three drawing projects. Submit all work to your Assessor for marking by the due date and include the Assessment Cover Sheet. Ask your Assessor to clarify items you are unsure about prior to commencing. Complete all tasks as stated.

You will be required to have a good understanding of the following areas:

  • Plan ideas for drawing work
  • Explore ideas and techniques and historical and contemporary drawing practice for own drawings
  • Select ideas for drawings based on exploration and discussion
  • Assess the capabilities of drawing techniques
  • Select techniques required to support ideas for own work

Benchmark

Using the Assessment Matrix below you are to achieve at least a rating of 4 to be deemed satisfactory in this task. You must demonstrate that you are able to experiment with different techniques and adapt and combine these techniques to complete the tasks below. All criteria listed in the Assessor’s Checklist must be met to the industry standards specified in this unit.

Location: Classroom/Studio with equipment and materials suited to drawing.

Assessment Task 3: Experimentation

Instructions for this task:

You are to explore and experiment with different drawing techniques. Once you have decided on the ideas submit all work to your Assessor for marking by the due date and include the Assessment Cover Sheet. Ask your Assessor to clarify items you are unsure about prior to commencing. Complete all tasks as stated.

You will be required to have a good understanding of the following areas:

  1. Explore techniques for own drawings
  2. Select ideas for drawings based on exploration and discussion
  3. Assess the capabilities of drawing techniques

Assessment Task 4: Create three drawings

Instructions for this task:

You are to produce three drawings for the client. Once you have decided on the ideas and completed all tasks, submit all work to your Assessor for marking by the due date and include the Assessment Cover Sheet. Ask your Assessor to clarify items you are unsure about prior to commencing. Complete all tasks as stated. Record all data, information, and sketches in your visual diary.

You will be required to have a good understanding of the following areas:

  1. Calculate, select and organise the type and quantity of drawing equipment, tools and materials based on the needs of the chosen work
  2. Use and adapt combined drawing techniques to create desired effects,
  3. Handle equipment, tools and materials safely and minimise waste throughout processes
