Fall Flannel Shirt Pillow

This pillow can be made as a fall accent pillow, or some sewers prefer to make beautiful Memory Pillows from shirts that were once worn by someone special.

A memory pillow can be made from a simple flannel shirt. It is especially easy to make if you are using a button-down shirt. You are going to need the following materials for your project:

  • 16-in poly-fill soft touch pillow insert
  • Button-down jacket or shirt
  • Sewing machine
  • Matching Thread
  • Sharp Scissors

Easy Fast Way:

  1. The first thing you are going to want to do is turn the shirt inside out. Cut the front and rear layers at a time so it can be immediately pinned so it all stays lined up nicely. When you cut out the square, ensure that you avoid the buttons. It is best to mark the back buttons with a piece of tape.
This can also help center them in the pillow.

  2. Cut the square 2 Inch larger than the finished pillow size.
    Example:
    Finished pillow size 16” square
Your Pillow insert will be 18” square (normally the insert is 2” larger than the finished pillow) Your cut size will be 17” x 17” which will allow a ½” seam allowance

  3. Sew the squares (front and back) together.

  4. Un button the opening and turn the shirt pillow right side out

  5. Insert the pillow inside of the pillow cover and button it back together.

  6. This pillow is quite easy and below I will show a little more detail to making this Flannel Shirt Pillow.

  7. There is no right way and no wrong way to make this pillow. Most important is that you are happy with your project.

  8. Select a few flannel shirts that match your décor. You can prewash them if you want. I just pressed the shirt and removed the wrinkles.

  9. If you are not sure about measurements you can cut a square piece of paper or Skirtex for a pattern and place it on the shirt front, it is easier to cut the shirt apart on the side seams and around the sleeves to create 2 pieces of fabric.

  10. . I wanted a contrast color for the back of the pillow, so it is good to use the yoke on the back of the shirt for accent.
    Easy Fast Way Easy Fast
Way
Remove the yoke from the shirt leaving ½” below the top stitching on the bottom of the yoke, press the fabric towards the wrong side and you can just top stitch the yoke to the pillow back fabric.

Way
Stitch the yoke to the fabric along all three edges and pin it in place if needed. I prefer to serge or overlock all raw edges of both the top and bottom fabrics.

Now pin both fabrics squares right sides together and stitch all four sides allowing a ½” seam allowance.

Unbutton the buttons and turn the pillow right side out. Then you can insert the pillow insert into your new flannel shirt pillow
