Helpful Hints
Before using the charger, please ensure the following:
- The BRAKE is depressed and fully engaged.
- The key is in the OFF position.
- The golf cart is in RUN mode.
OBC Communication Failure
-
If you encounter an OBC Communication Failure with the following error code:
-
Error Code: The charger is cycling a sequence from Red (Fan on), yellow (Fan on), and Green (Fan off) every 30 seconds.
-
Description: The charger is trying to communicate with the golf cart’s onboard computer (OBC), which has failed on your cart.
-
Note: From 1995 to 2014, all Club Car models have an OBC.
-
This computer is very temperamental and is likely why your original charger stopped charging the cart.
-
Option 1: OBC Replacement – Take your golf cart to a service technician to replace the OBC (The typical cost is $400-$700).
-
This will likely allow your original charger to function properly.
Step-by-step Instructions:
- Switch the golf cart back to RUN mode.
OBC Bypass: 2004 and Up Club Car (Back Side of Receptacle)
If you have a 2004 and Up Club Car, you can try bypassing the OBC using the following instructions:
Step-by-step Instructions
- Switch the golf cart back to RUN mode.
Golf Cart Not Detected / Below Safety Voltage
If your golf cart is not being detected or is below safety voltage, you can perform an OBC function test to diagnose the issue.
OBC Function Testing – Test 1:
- Set the multimeter to DC Voltage (Symbol for DC Voltage below).
- Check for voltage by placing the red probe on the left pin and the black probe on the right pin of the receptacle.
- If no voltage is present in step 2, while keeping the red probe on the receptacle, place the black probe on the last negative terminal of the battery pack.
- If you can now read a voltage, you have confirmed a faulty OBC.
- Please complete the steps in the OBC Communication Failure section above.
OBC Function Testing – Test 2:
For individual OBC component testing, please consult a golf cart service provider. They may recommend an OBC bypass, for which we have provided instructions in the OBC Communication Failure section above.
No Charger Power
If no LED is illuminated on the charger, please refer to the Initial Troubleshooting Guide Step 1 – VERIFY YOUR AC OUTLET IS WORKING in the manual or at www.FormCharge.com/help.

OBC Communication Failure
- Error Code – The charger is cycling a sequence from Red (Fan on), yellow (Fan on), and Green (Fan off) every 30 seconds.
- Description – The charger is trying to communicate with the golf cart’s onboard computer (OBC). The OBC has failed on your cart.
- Note: From 1995 to 2014, all Club Car models have an OBC. This computer is very temperamental and is likely why your original charger stopped charging the cart.
- Option 1: OBC Replacement – Take your golf cart to a service technician to replace the OBC (The typical cost is $400-$700). This will likely allow your original charger to function properly.
- Option 2: OBC Bypass – This simple procedure includes running a single wire from your receptacle to the main negative battery terminal. With the OBC bypass, the FORM Charge smart technology allows for proper charging despite a malfunctioning OBC.
OBC Bypass: 1995 – 2004 Club Car (Back Side of Receptacle)
- Step 1 – Switch the golf cart to tow mode.
- Step 2 – Remove the battery near the golf cart receptacle.
- Step 3 – Attach a new bypass wire (minimum 12ga) from the battery’s last negative terminal in the series to the location shown on the back of the receptacle.
- Step 4 – Reinstall the battery that was removed.
- Step 5 – Switch the golf cart back to run mode.
OBC Bypass: 2004 and Up Club Car (Back Side of Receptacle)
- Step 1 – Switch the golf cart to TOW mode.
- Step 2 – Remove the battery near the golf cart receptacle.
- Step 3 – Cut the black wire on the back of the receptacle and cap the end going to the OBC. Leave enough wire (about 4 inches) to connect to the new wire.
- Step 4 – Connect a bypass wire (minimum 12ga) from the last negative battery terminal to the black wire (Cut in Step 3) on the back of the receptacle.
- Step 5 – Reinstall the battery that was removed.
- Step 6 – Switch the golf cart back to RUN mode.
Golf Cart Not Detected / Below Safety Voltage
- Error Code – Red / Green flashing every second when plugged into the golf cart.
- Description – The charger is sensing a voltage below the minimum safety voltage or no voltage from the golf cart. To prevent damaging batteries, golf cart chargers require the presence of a minimum voltage to protect against 1 failing battery damaging the battery set.
- Troubleshooting – Please see the Initial Troubleshooting Guide “Step 2 – CHECKING CONNECTIONS & COMMON ISSUES” & “STEP 3 -TESTING YOUR BATTERIES” in the manual or at formcharge.com/help
- If the two tests above do not solve the problem, please complete the following OBC function test.
OBC Function Testing
Test 1
- Step 1.1 – Set the multimeter to DC Voltage (Symbol for DC Voltage below).
- Step 1.2 – Check for voltage by placing the red probe on the left pin and the black probe on the right pin of the receptacle.
- Step 1.3 – If no voltage is present in step 1.2 while keeping the red probe on the receptacle, place the black probe on the last negative terminal of the battery pack.
- If you can now read a voltage, you have confirmed a faulty OBC. Please complete the steps in the OBC Communication Failure section above.
Test 2
- Step 2.1 – Please consult a golf cart service provider for individual OBC component testing. (At this stage, a golf cart service provider will likely recommend an OBC bypass, for which we have provided instructions in the OBC Communication Failure section above).
No Charger Power
- Error Code – No LED is illuminated on the charger.
