Product Usage Instructions

Blade Sharpening

To sharpen the blade, follow these steps:

  1. Turn the brass thumbscrew clockwise to tighten.
  2. Tighten the chrome-plated iron screw to make it fully secure (refer to fig 3).

Quick Tips

For quick and efficient use of the plane, consider the following tips:

  • Hold the plane firmly with both hands.
  • Apply even pressure while planning.
  • Check the blade’s sharpness regularly.
  • Adjust the depth of the cut as needed (refer to Fig 5).

For Best Results

To achieve the best results with the CBP65 and CBP95 planes, it is recommended to:

  • Use the plane on a stable and flat surface.
  • Ensure the blade is properly sharpened.
  • Apply consistent and controlled pressure while planning.

Product Care

To maintain the CBP65 and CBP95 planes and ensure their longevity, follow these care instructions:

  1. Clean the plane after each use with a soft cloth to remove any dust or debris.
  2. Store the plane in a dry and clean environment to prevent rusting.
  3. Regularly inspect the blade and handles for any signs of damage or wear.
  4. Keep the plane away from moisture and corrosive substances.
  5. Periodically lubricate the moving parts with a suitable lubricant.

FAQ

Q: How often should I sharpen the blade?

  • A: The frequency of blade sharpening depends on your usage. It is recommended to check the sharpness regularly and sharpen as needed.

Q: Can I use the CBP65 and CBP95 planes on uneven surfaces?

  • A: While it is possible to use the plane on uneven surfaces, it may affect the quality of the planning results.
  • For optimal performance, it is recommended to use the plane on stable and flat surfaces.

Q: What lubricant should I use for the moving parts?

  • A: It is recommended to use a light machine oil or a silicone-based lubricant for lubricating the moving parts of the plane.

Blade Sharpening

  • For best results, the blade (sometimes otherwise referred to as ‘the cutter’, or ‘the iron’) on this product requires sharpening before use.
  • This requires removing the iron cap (sometimes otherwise referred to as the ‘lever cap’).
  • Loosen the chrome-plated iron cap screw.
  • Turn the brass thumbscrew anti-clockwise, then remove the iron cap from the blade (fig 1).
  • Remove the bade from the Block Plane.
  • This product is supplied with a cutter ground angle of 25° and should be honed to 30° (fig 2).
  • Use thin machine oil to lubricate a flat oil stone and place the 25° bevel flat on the stone, raising the cutter 5° to the 30° honing angle.
  • Using a figure of eight movements to distribute wear evenly, sharpen the blade.
  • Once a burr has formed at the edge of the blade, turn it over and re-position the blade to sit flat against the oil stone with the bevel facing up. Gently sharpen to remove the burr.
  • Ensuring the iron cap edge is parallel to the blade edge, re-attach the blade and iron cap and turn the brass thumbscrew clockwise to tighten, plus also tighten the chrome-plated iron screw to make it fully secure (fig 3).

Quick Tips

  • The brass adjusting nut at the back of the plane can be used to alter the depth of the cut (fig 4).
  • The throat depth can be adjusted by deploying the plated lever and brass lock nut at the front of the plane (fig 5).SPEAR-JACKSON-CBP65-Block-Plane-FIG-1

For Best Results

  • Keep shaving thickness to a minimum.
  • Ensure that the plane base is maintained in line with the workpiece.
  • At the end of each cutting stroke, lift the plane from the workpiece before the next stroke.
  • A slightly finer finish can be achieved by applying less pressure on the final strokes.
  • Candle wax can be used for ease of movement if required; simply rub the wax into the base of the plane.

Product Care

  • Keep the blade sharp, and oil metal parts when not in use.
  • Do not use other metal objects to clear shavings from the plane.
  • When not in use, lay the plane on its side to protect the blade.
