IMPRESSIONIST FLORAL PAINTING
INSTRUCTOR: STEVE WILLIAMS
This materials list consists of mandatory items, as well as optional items.
Any additional materials that you already have in your artist’s toolkit are
always welcome. Suggested brand names are `italicized’. While all materials
can be found at Opus Art Supplies, similar products and brands from other
stores are welcome.
PAINT
- Titanium White
- Cadmium Yellow Light (or Cadmium Yellow Lemon, or any bright yellow)
- Yellow Ochre Pale (or Yellow Ochre)
- Cadmium Red Medium
- Terra Rosa
- Alizarin Crimson
- Transparent Oxide Red (or Burnt Sienna)
- Transparent Oxide Brown (or Burnt Umber)
- Viridian · Ultramarine Blue ·
- Ivory Black
NOTE: It is recommended to use artist grade’ vs.
student grade’ paint.
Affordable brands include Holbein, Gamblin, Winsor & Newton (not Winton), Opus
Essentials, or Kama, as well as Rembrandt. More expensive brands are welcome
too.
MEDIUM
FOR OILS:
Gamsol’ odourless mineral spirits (one small bottle)
- We recommend `Gamsol’ as other brands have a strong smell.
- Have an extra glass jar + lid to store excess dirty OMS after class.
FOR ACRYLICS:
- Small spray bottle for water, to keep your paint wet.
- Acrylic ‘Retarder’ to extend drying time for acrylics.
BRUSHES
Please have a range of shapes & sizes. Feel free to use whatever brushes you
enjoy working with.
Steve prefers soft and medium stiffness synthetic brushes:
- Filberts or Comber filberts: size 4, 6 and 8 (2 of each)
- 2 Flats or Comber Flats: size 10 or 12
- Synthetic Rounds: sizes 2 and 4 (1 of each)
GESSO
- Acrylic White `Gesso’ (small bottle) for surface preparation (see below).
SURFACE
Please have 4 hardboard (aka MDF) panels, canvases, or canvas boards, any size
between 8″ x 8″and 8″ x 10″. Steve prefers painting on hardboard.
SURFACE PREPARATION:
- All surfaces require a total of 3 layers of acrylic gesso.
- Surfaces with gesso already included, please add 2 more layers, allowing to dry between layers.
- Try to minimize brush strokes in the gesso by using a soft, wide brush (like 3″ or wider) and gently fan out the brush strokes.
PALETTE KNIFE
We recommend the `Liquitex’ Small Painting Knife #8.
PALETTE
OI L S: Steve recommends a disposal palette. ACRYLICS: OPTIONAL It is
recommended to use a Masterson Sta-Wet’ palette (16″ x 12″). * link to material (click to open) **PAPER TOWELS & RAGS** · One roll of
Scott’s Shop Towels’ (blue). Found at any commercial painting
and lumber stores.

PENCIL & ERASER- 2B pencil + one `kneaded’ eraser
CLOTHING
- Painting can be messy, please wear suitable clothing.
GLOVES (optional)
- While Painting: Latex or `Guerilla Grip’ gloves (breathable + waterproof)
- Brush Cleaning: Waterproof rubber gloves are recommended.
OPTIONAL
- Mahl stick
- Paint `Razor’ Scraper (to clean & organize your glass palette).
