DENNERLE-CO2-pH-Electrode-product

Product Information: pH Electrode for Aquaria

The pH electrode for aquaria is designed for continuous measurement of the pH value in freshwater and seawater aquariums. It is compatible with all Dennerle pH controllers and can also be used with other standard pH measuring and control devices with a BNC connector.

Components:

  • BNC connector
  • Connecting cable, 3m
  • Electrode cap
  • Plastic stem
  • Electrode tip with membrane
  • Quali-Safe electrode protector (contains KCl solution, 3 molar)

Product Usage Instructions: pH Electrode Calibration and Maintenance

Calibrating the pH Electrode

  1. Remove the Quali-Safe electrode protector and carefully take out the electrode. Note: Any white salt crust on the electrode shaft is calcium chloride (KCl) and does not affect measuring performance.
  2. Prepare the calibration by placing the electrode in approximately 2cm of pH 7 buffer solution. You can use the Dennerle calibration station for convenience.
  3. After calibrating at pH 7, rinse the electrode with distilled water and place it in approximately 2cm of pH 4 buffer solution.
  4. The pH electrode is now ready for use.

Maintenance and Cleaning:

  • Clean the electrode regularly to ensure accurate measurements.
  • Use a suitable cleaning solution or rinse with distilled water.

Safety instructions

DENNERLE-CO2-pH-Electrode- \(1\)

  • All cables leading out of the aquarium must be provided with a drip loop to prevent any water which may run down the cables from reaching items of equipment or the mains socket outlet.
  • Always disconnect all devices located in the water from the power supply before placing your hands in the aquarium water.

Which equipment can the pH electrode be used with?

The Dennerle pH electrode for aquaria works perfectly in combination with with all Dennerle pH controllers.Equally, it can also be used with all other standard pH measuring and control devices with BNC connec-tor. Please observe the instructions for use of the device concerned!

What‘s what

  1. BNC connector

Connecting the pH electrode

  1. Unscrew the lid of the Quali-Safe electrode protector and carefully remove the electrode. Note: Any white salt crust which may appear on the electrode shaft consists of calcium chloride (KCL) and will not affect measuring performance.
  2. Rinse electrode tip briefly under running tap water, in order to remove residual KCl solution/ the salt crust.
  3. Connect BNC connector to pH controller or pH measuring device.

Calibrating the pH electrode

Purpose of calibration and calibration interval
Any measuring instrument can only be as accurate as the connected sensor. The pH electrode is thus a vitally important part of your pH measuring device.
As every pH electrode may drift somewhat in the course of time, it is crucial to calibrate the pH electrode

  • when putting it into operation for the 1st time
  • after the 1st week
  • and then every 4 to 6 weeks (under normal operating conditions).

Preparations for the calibration process
Ideal temperature of the buffer solutions: 20-25 °C.
Pour pH 7 and pH 4 buffer solution into two separate, clean receptacles up to a level of approx. 2 cm. Pour a little distilled water into a third receptacle.

TIP: The Dennerle calibrating station is particularly convenient and saves valuable buffer solution.
Please note: The accuracy of the calibration depends above all on the quality of the employed buffer solutions. We thus recommend original Dennerle buffer solutions. Do not carry out calibration in the supply bottles – water on the pH electrode may alter the buffer solutions! Dispose of used buffer solution down the drain.

Calibration procedure

DENNERLE-CO2-pH-Electrode- \(6\)

  • Rinse pH electrode briefly in distilled water and place in pH 7 buffer solution.
  • Wait for around 1 minute, until the measured value reading remains constant.
  • Carry out pH 7 calibration
  • Rinse pH electrode briefly in distilled water and place in pH 4 calibrating solution.
  • Wait for around 1 minute, until the dis-played measured value remains constant.
  • Carry out pH 4 calibration.

The pH electrode is now ready for use.

Care and maintenance

Cleaning
Clean dirty electrodes with a soft cloth. IMPORTANT: The spherical electrode tip is highly sensitive and should be dabbed, not rubbed! Then rinse and calibrate.

Service life
All pH electrodes are subject to wear and normally have a service life of 12 to 18 months. The ageing process varies, depending in particular on the water hardness: Hard water prolongs the service life, soft water shortens the service life. The following factors may accelerate the ageing process considerably: Covering with algae/bacteria, soiling, high temperature, mechanical strain or electric fault currents in the aquarium.

Special information

  • Never allow a pH electrode to dry out! When pH electrodes are to remain out of use for a prolonged period, fill QualiSafe electrode protector with KCl solution and fit onto electrode tip. Screw lid into place.
  • Should the electrode inadvertently be allowed to dry out, you can attempt to restore it to working order by placing it in KCl solution for 24 h, with the electrode tip submerged by approx. 2 cm. Then rinse electrode with distilled water and calibrate.
  • DO NOT store electrode in distilled water!
  • Do not store the electrode at over 30 °C or under 0 °C. Protect from frost.
  • Do not submerge electrode completely under water! The electrode cap must always be at least 2 cm above the surface of the water.
  • Keep connector clean and dry at all times.
  • Install the electrode at a spot in the aquarium which is as dark as possible, so as to avoid it becoming covered in algae. Electrode tips coated with algae may have a detrimental effect on measuring accuracy. We recommend the Dennerle pH electrode holder with light shield to prevent algae formation.
  • Do not install electrode cables together with other electric cables over long distances. In this way, you can avoid the possibility of other electric circuits influencing the measurement results.
  • Do not kink the electrode cable.
  • IMPORTANT: If the pH electrode is not in the aquarium water, the device will be unable to perform its measurement and control functions correctly – which may put your fish in danger! You should therefore check the position of the electrode and the water level on a regular basis!
